There's just a handful of things you need to learn in order to compete with others. Or play fun games like low gravity or gun-game. Gun game is a FANTASTIC way to get better at the game.

I'm guessing almost everyone communicates with a mic instead of keyboard? I have a headset, but it only works if I plug it into the back of the computer, which is usually a bigger hassle than it's worth.

If you want to participate in the discussions, yes. The CS chat window sucks. (and you'll need the mic anyways for actual tactical conversations)

I'm playing CSS:DM a lot right now just to get used to CSS (I played the HL version extensively a couple of years ago). If you are new its a good way to learn the shooting aspect of CS, but to learn the tactics/teamwork requires you to play the vanilla game or scrim. In CSDM you can pick the guns you want to learn and practice with them for a while.

Oh and CSDM is better if you are extremely impatient or have ADD.

I've never really enjoyed CS. It could be that I've never given it enough time to learn it, but I dislike the combination of "tactics" and bunny-hopping and flash headshots.

I dislike the ballistic properties of CS. Emptying an AK mag into a crowd at relatively close range should kill at least someone, all I end up getting is a shotgun blast in the face from twenty feet away...

It's alot funner when you don't have fifty people in a tightly constricted map meant for a dozen or so at the most. It's hard to have tactics when there's a dozen people covering every possible exit/entrance, which would allow you to flank them, within ten seconds.

Yeah, the game is VERY inconsistent. Don't look for realism in CSS. The shotgun is probably the worst, getting 50 foot headshots one minute, and not being able to kill a guy in arm's reach the next.

I know...it's been ingrained in my head for years as an OFPer. I guess I kinda forgot after playing with bots so long on maps where I had an AWP...and DoD...and RO...and the afforementioned OFP...I guess i'm just too used to one shot kills... But still, I do vaguely recall having some semblance of fun in a smallish group in CS:S back before I lost DSL.
