Agree. It's fine as is.

I like the fact that I don't have to wade through a bunch of F words to read interesting stuff...

Besides what does it hurt to see **** instead of the other words for poop or sex?

Censorship is a stupid and misguided attempt to medicate the real problem, which is disrespect.

It's not censorship. Governments do that. There is no reason to allow it. I don't like when people "censor" part of a word and leave the rest(like "****ers").

I don't like how you're not supposed to call something "gay", "retarded", or something like that because somebody might get offended. Then, of course, the PC police here are all over you.

Although, Kirb, you are correct that disrespect is the main issue.

Correct. It's not censorship; it's just annoying. I know exactly what you mean by **** most of the time.

As much as some people don't want to believe it, Massassi still has some very young members, young members that don't need to be around foul language. It's not just censorship or disrespect, it's keeping Massassi clean for those who don't need to be around things like that.

I say it's far more about atmosphere, and I find that important and thus say no, leave it "censored".

It is impossible for the public to practice censorship. It isn't censorship unless a government is restricting somebody's right to free speach. Problem is that the definition of free speach has become so perverted now.

People can still swear here as much as they want, it will just be turned into those asterisks. And I reckon 99% of the time no information is lost. That alone tells how "important" it is, whether it's allowed or not.

You mean young members living under piles of heavy rocks?

I really don't think anybody would need to visit an online SW forum to learn swearing. I'm sure they can and will get the required vocabulary easily enough from RL.

Yeah, what I said. Confirms that massassi cannot, by definition, engage in censorship.

My point was that Massassi is supposed to be 'G' rated, the forum rules state so (or at least did last time I read over them). Just because someone hears swearing all the time at home or school doesn't mean that it's okay, or that it's okay for Massassi to let it go as well. They can hear it at home, they don't have to hear(read) it on Massassi.

Besides, Massassi has been just fine thus far with filtering. I personally enjoy the forums because of this.

If there's a possibility of adding an option in the CP, I'm all for it, but make it optional.

Because I like to cuss.

Seriously the youngest person in the channel is Genki.

I don't think the swearing thing has anything to do with age.

Hell, every 4-year-old I've ever seen has cussed like a maniac (especially when their parents are gone). Or any kid in general. Unless it's a religious kid, and those are quite rare in the land of Kveens these days.

That's because every word in Finnish is a swear.

That's why you all learn English, so you can talk in church.
2007-08-26, 4:28 AM #30
I like things how they are. Swearing is a poor way of expressing one's self (I do it far too often and far too casually) and I like being forced to think of better ways of getting my point across.

I like the no swearing rule cause it forces some level of maturity.

There is no such rule here.

With the censoring filter, there's no need for such a rule, you know.

No it is NOT.

The forum uses post caches and such. Hacking in an option such as this would severely hurt the performance of the forums.

I believe Jon`C once proposed that we allow swearing, and then simply ban anyone who can't exercise some self-restraint when using a typed, editable medium of communication.

I support this. But I also support no swearing.

I don't particularly have anything against swearing in general, but I don't believe that allowing it on Massassi will improve anyone's experience with the forums and it'll certainly exacerbate issues somewhere along the line.

I really like the fact that you can't swear on these forums - it's a refreshing change from the endless swearing you hear out and about, that I hear working with maladjusted teenagers, and which (against my will) pervades my own vocabulary at home. I think I have to admit that mother was right about this one!

Yes, so do I.

I voted for it to be permitted in the chat, but I really wouldn't mind if it was banned there as well - I kinda miss having a 'clean' chat (think #massassi 3-4 years back).

Just so you know, this is because of the software, not the person. If you say, uh, 'f-bombers', the forums will filter out the f bomb but not the 'ers' you tacked on to the end. Although I guess your point is probably more that people shoudn't be saying that stuff in the first place, but I'm just saying is all.
