Massassi's policies against swearing (and other speech) is indeed censorship. When I post '****' I am being censored. The jurisdictional boundaries of the censoring organization does not affect the use of the word. Go back to grade school.

I thought allowing swearing meant using censors without penalty from swearing, even if it's starred out.

All confused.
Epstein didn't kill himself.

I vote that the censors not simply star out swears, they replace the swear with something awesome. Like on the SA forums, I think, it replaces 'f***' with 'gently caress'. And of course, that forum some guy on here made once a long time ago and he had like no friends on it had a similar system... needless to say, 'massassi' was turned into 'mbuttbutti'. :D
DO NOT WANT.

I already admitted that I misread the definition (I had a tangent thought on my mind and there's no excuse that my mistake slipped by me). Now obviously the fact that neither your nor Kirb's statements directed at me had any swear words in it does go a long way to prove Kirby's point that disrespect is the main issue. The direct and indirect manner in which so many members here will insult people is irritating.

Now, to sound like a broken record, Massassi can in no way diminish anybody's ability to free expression. If this whole damn site was shut down we would all still have free expression, in so much as is allowed by law in our respective countries.

Also, do anyone remember a member named "Tempermental," or something similar, who left Massassi after getting paranoid with Massassi's swear filter?

I have an idea! We'll allow each user to have a swear-quota. You can swear a maximum of 3 times per day, and after that, all your swears turn into asterisks until the day is up. I think that this is a perfect middle ground that everyone can agree upon!
2007-08-26, 7:44 PM #91

This is a badly designed poll. I get 41% for swearing on the forums and 69% for swearing in the chat.

This is in no way preferable to allowing each user to turn the swear filter on/off for themselves.

That's ridiculous.

By giving each member the option to turn off the filter in his user control panel, nothing has visibly changed to the layman, but those of us who would rather use the forums in their uncensored goodness have the option to.

Your request is nothing but selfishness, because you're trying to dictate how others use the forum.

Not if it works in JavaScript. Like... it wouldn't be retroactive, but you could make the profanity filter stick special tags around censored words like <span class="fbomb">****</span>. Then JavaScript injected into every pages iterates through each span after page load and replaces the innerText.

This way without JavaScript it fails to a kid-friendly level.

[Edit: Actually no option would be retroactive, would it, unless the DB stores the profanity even when the filter is on (which I don't think it does?).]

Except the technical consideration of that slowing the forums down.

Did you read the thread or just get straight to flaming?

The ****ty hacks would slow down the forums, not a properly-designed system.

It has been decided that instead of a filter, swear words shall be replaced with usernames of prominent members of the forum.

In other news: Bodybuilding.com's forums allow swearing and it's not all that bad, really. Most of the good posters have the common decency(sp?) not to swear, the others who do just get labled as troll's and banned.

Speaking of banned, does anybody have the "MB Banstick" picture?

Replacing swearwords with usernames would make the universe explode as soon as somebody said J u z t y n. (will I get banned for evading the filter?)
