Team Fortress 2

How ridiculously fun is this game, seriously?

For those who don't know, the Team Fortress 2 beta was released for those who pre-ordered the Orange box. I've played it about 4-5 hours so far, and I just can't stop. The action is furious, but the game remains light hearted due to the graphical style. Every class seems as good as the next, although I am seeing way too many engineers when I play.

I think my favorite class so far is the spy. I've gotten pretty good at blending into oncoming waves of enemies to slip further in and take care of the engineers that are defending. Although it's always fun to jump over to the Heavy Weapons Guy, find a medic and lay down some carnage.

I had originally planned to pre-order when I heard about getting TF2 early, but now I'm thinking I'll just get Halo 3 next week, then get the Orange Box when it has its retail release. I know that once I get the Orange Box Halo 3 is probably going to take the backseat for a while.

Man.. I might have to get this.. Just for TF2. I LOVED the first one. Best part about the game is there isn't really such thing as a good or bad player. It's a fun game, really simple and easy. Almost anyone could do as good as the next player.

I loved sniping 2fort. But that would get old after 30 or so consecutive kills and I would run over as a medic infecting their base, and using the medics speed to grab the flag and swim over for the capture. Had a couple other favorites too where I would usually just be a medic since the sniping wasn't as fun... can't remember the names for that.

I've been out of PC gaming for a while, (I played a little WoW and BF2 for a while, but other than that nothing) and just the occasional Madden or Halo on console. But I think I'm going to have to get this one, even if I don't play it that much with the overtime schedule I'm about to have.
Glad to hear its still fun.

Hopefully this will make multiplayer games fun again.

HWG: "I'M BULLETPROOF"

I'm usually too busy playing to take screenshots. The game offers you chances to take screenshots of the people who kill you, but really, who wants to do that?

HWG: "HEY YOU. YES, YOU! YOU'RE DEAD!"

Things I really like about this game:
  • All the classes are really fun to play.
    • The spy's challenge is to sneak behind enemy lines and then blend in with the enemy team without being detected, and sabotage enemy sentry guns and knife enemies.
    • The heavy weapons guy just mows people down, the hardest part is finding enough ammo to support your new hobby. If you can team with a medic it gets even better.
    • A scout's job is mostly to run, shoot, run, shoot, but mostly run. I almost took down a heavy by myself as a scout once.
    • A medic has to seek out wounded players. The faster he heals people, the quicker he can get a temporary invulnerability powerup for himself and another player. Typically this other player is best as a heavy.
    • Engineers have to pick best places for their sentry guns and teleporters and upgrade and protect them from enemies.
    • As a pyro you have to get close to enemies to burn them.
    • I haven't played as a Demoman yet but I often see them planting sticky grenades near places where they expect enemies to come through and wait. Plus they have a grenade launcher and can rocket jump.
    • Soldiers have RPGs which are useful for blowing stuff up and rocket jumping.
    • Snipers are... well... snipers. They can't get off quick one-hit-kill shots so they can't be cheap.
  • The CTF involves briefcases with enemy intel. When you steal a briefcase it appears on your back, and papers fall out of it as you run. Cute.
  • The developer commentary lets you get the feel for three of the levels, plus lots of talk about features and details in the game plus some talk about cut features.
  • The stats and achievements system, apart from where it reset my stats and achievements by itself once.
  • If you're doing good, you're more likely to keep doing good by getting "critical hits" on enemies.
  • The nemesis system allows you to see which enemies you need to look out for (because they've killed you a lot) and let you know when you're doing good (because you've killed others a lot).
  • Valve implemented their NPC voice system thingy into multiplayer, so when you're playing when certain conditions are met, player characters may automatically say something relevant. For example, when you push past a teammate you may say "Coming through". When you're a heavy and you've been firing your minigun for 5 or 10 seconds straight, you may let out a manical laugh.
  • It's very easy to distinguish the team and enemy of other players from a distance.

Some of this stuff I ripped from Valve's developer commentary, but it's true.

My favorite class so far is the heavy. But the spy and the engineer are fun too.

Game doesn't load for me, solutions posted didn't work.

I'm semi-pissed off. :/

Try validating your cache for the game under the TF2 properties. If that doesn't work, close steam, delete the Team Fortress 2 directory and restart Steam and reinstall (you won't have to download it again).

I'll try that when I get home from work. :/

Can you test dustbowl?

Because I'm really interested on how they handled that classic map. They better have kept the MADNESS.

I love the fact that spies on your side still look like spies on your side and wear cardboard masks of the class they're disguised as.

I've got mixed feelings about the fact that almost no one has grenades. Radically changes the gameplay.

I played for just a little bit today. I'll probably play more tonight.

It was hella fun though. I too favor Heavy Weapons Guy, though I like setting up support with the medic. Scout is fun to run around the enemy with. I almost took out a heavy with a scout and the baseball bat. 23* HP down, so close. I'm not a big fan of the pyro, but I wasn't playing on maps that made him really useful. I like how the sniper has charged shots if he waits a little to shoot. Valve made him useful without being cheap. Demo guy is fun, but it feels like the explosives don't do enough damage. Only complaint about the soldier is that I run out of ammo too fast before having to reload. Didn't play as engineer much. My other favorite though is the spy.

I was playing spy on a cp map, where blue attacks and red defends. We were assaulting the last point, and I'm a spy. I disguise myself as an enemy spy, go to their last cp where there are three engineers setting up dispensers and guns, and wait. A few guys from my team come barreling through the perimeter, and all I do is pull out the gun, and six shots later we win the game. It was fun as all hell.

I definitely see myself playing this game a lot. I enjoy the maniacal, frantic action more than CS:S or DoD:S.

I broke down and bought the Orange Box. Just too much content to resist... HL: Episode 1 (which I havent played yet) and 2, Portal, TF2, and even that "Peggle extreme" thing was fun. TF2 is only 55% downloaded for me though, and I gotta work in 20 mins :-/

Demoman has sticky mines and grenade launcher.

Valve took out grenades because they found that having grenades led to grenade spamming, and without them the game immediately became more fun. Their words.

I heard multiple complains in game yesterday about "Oh man they nerfed sollys and medics and [insert class here] with no nades".

The idea is that every class you can pick from has serious strengths and weaknesses.. Medics aren't an assault class anymore (I used to conc in, grab flag, conc out) - Sentry Guns are insane to deal with but having a Spy play to their strengths (ie destroying Sentrys) makes it easier on the team to move ahead.

It takes a lot of teamwork and its good if you can play on a server where everyone is sharing tasks (2 Engineers, few solly/scouts, a Heavy/Medic combo & a decent spy) the game will flow and make a ton of sense.

Its great otherwise, the change in style is fantastic and the characters are terrifically animated (from the little things like the HWG Hugging his chaingun, to the Medic's labcoat flowing behind him as he runs) and the sounds are good too. Map adaptions are smooth and hold the same feel as the originals (2fort, Dustbowl).

I played the hell out of 2fort yesterday. The spy is great for sapping sentry guns, and the scout is great for following up to get the briefcase.

What kind of keyboard doesn't have print screen? And you can change the button to something else anyways.

Mac keyboards.

Edit: Because in mac, you just do cmd+shift+3, but I can't do the same thing in my boot camp partition.

Got it working.

This game is AWESOME.

Reminds me of when I used to play FPS games for like 5-6 hours at a time instead of doing homework.

This is really what I've been missing out of multiplayer games.

:(
Medics were damned close to being the ultimate assault/flag running class. Decent health, nades, powerful shotgun, conc nades, infecting abilities. Kind of sad that that isn't there anymore.

But, people's opinions seem to be quite positive, so maybe it's for the best.
2007-09-20, 3:38 PM #34
Alot of the classes don't seem to play the same.

But the game is seriously non-stop fun. Anyone who says it isn't is likely a huge douchebag.

Valve has done it again. Perhaps I'll pre-order it as well.

Hm, maybe I'll get it.

For 360.

Because my PC sucks.

Will I be able to use user-made maps/mods though?
