An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.

That's not the issue. It's bricking those iphones that are already hacked. As in, you can't use it anymore.

I agree.

I don't see what the problem is. Apple doesn't want people tampering with the iPhone. It's obviously against any contract / warranty that is included with the product. Apple has sole right to do whatever the hell they want with the update. If they want to punish those who violated the contract / warranty (however stupid the idea of locking people into a set contract with a set provider is), then that is there choice.

it seems that on some phones it bricks, but most others just need a at&t sim card to use

I certainly hope it's not literally bricking the phone. They're opening themselves up for a lawsuit of monumental proportions. Once I buy an iPhone (which I would never do, but for the sake of argument) it's MINE. YES you can deny me service, but you can't screw it up because I OWN IT.

Yes, but this is a modifying software issue.

Me modifying the software breaks ToS. It doesn't break the purchase of the item. If anyone in congress knew anything about technology, this kind of Seb would be done and over with.

We have a perfectly working iPhone update here, designed to update your iPhone as it was purchased.

You tamper with your software on the iPhone. You break your warranty and Terms of Service.

This update does not need to guarantee it will work on hacked iPhones. It just needs to guarantee to work on ones that have not been tampered with. If it breaks your iPhone, it is YOUR fault for updating.

For god's sake stop blaming other people for something that you are the sole cause of. YOU updated the phone, YOU took the risk, YOU deal with it.

Well, it depends. It's possible that Apple is deliberately inserting code to brick the iPhones, which isn't necessarily illegal, but totally uncool.

Why don't people buy the phone with no coupled contract? Surely it might be a bit more expensive but then they wouldn't need to hack it... Even official firmware updates can screw devices, not to mention some hacks from purely academically interested university students or wherever they originate from.

Because you CAN'T buy one without a contract.

Apple: "If you hack it then it will probably break if you run software update."
People: "Let's hack it"

People hack the iPhone.

Apple: "Better not update the firmware it might brick it."
People: "Ok whatever."

People update the firmware anyway.

People: "What the hell it broke my phone how was I to know?!?"

The voices of reason. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but come on guys, this just makes sense.

You guys should not be mad at Apple for this, you should be mad at AT&T.

They're the ones that made this whole exclusivity thing happen in the first place.

But there's no reason to break third party apps.

They are contractually obligated to try to thwart unlocking, ATT loses money if people go to T-mobile. However, third party apps hurt no one, all it does is screw over the consumers.

I love my iPhone, and I love my IRC and AIM clients on it, so I just won't update to 1.1.1

It is a little confusing since about a week ago Apple said they were officially taking a "no stance" policy on hacked iPhones in terms of adding new programs and whatnot. They also said they wouldn't intentionally break hacked phones in a patch. I can't recall what their policy on unlocked phones was though.

I think Apple is in the right here. I'm pretty sure that on the phone itself, Apple and AT&T don't make much money. That's the reason you have to get the two-year-contract. The phone is built for AT&T, and if you're going to hack it, then you should have to pay the consequences. If you don't want AT&T, don't get a freaking iPhone.

probably because AT&T gave them a bunch of money... Whereas, T-Mobile spent that money improving their network.

I have Verizon. :)
2007-09-28, 7:01 PM #35
Echoman, look at the prices between T-Mobile and AT&T/Verizon. T-Mobile is LESS EXPENSIVE, in spite of spending more money for network improvements.. Why? Because T-Mobile is not making shady deals with wireless phone manufacturers to *force* consumers to use their service with the phone they want.

None of us are surprised, like you "voices of reason" are suggesting. We're irked that this is the kind of relationship apple wants to have with its customers.

T-Mobile is cheaper, they are also the only one of the 4 big US cell companies not offering 3G, so they kinda have to be...

yeah, but that's not exactly their fault (scroll down to article re: T-Mobile's 3G delay)... But they're making up for it by offering MyFaves and HotSpot @ Home, which are both insanely innovative...
