To Propose? (Never thought I'd ask Massassi this)

I think marriage is a good thing, in that it shows two peoples commitments to the community as a whole. But its the type of thing where you have to be smart about it. I don't plan on getting married until around 30, assuming I've been in a long relationship at that point. I don't feel that marriage needs to be about the legal aspect.. but I find the ceremony important. Not for religious reasons either, simply for the community aspect. This is of course relating to a small town, not a large city. >_>

What does marriage have to do with community?

Because you grab everyone you know and bring them all to one spot to celebrate you and your significant other?

If done properly, a whole bunch of people get together and make everything happen. Just an excuse for an awesome party I suppose.

Plenty if you're anti-gay.
2007-11-30, 11:32 PM #45
I don't see the connection to gay people. They can get married too for all I care.

Because that's when you're girlfriend will be legal? LOLZOR

But realistically, women find a security in marriage. Men typically would rather have the "try before you buy" period last indefinitely, but not a lot of women are up for all that. Besides, you're legally married after living together 5 years I think, or something of some equivalence.

Schming I'd say give it another 6 months at least and don't rush into it just yet.

Oh, and get us some new Futurists material. :P
nope.
2007-12-02, 4:17 PM #57
Greenboy wants to have a flower-garlanded hippy love ceremony.

Schming is condemned to writing sappy pop love songs for the next forever.

Xasthur just doesn't get it.

Ironically, JG gets it, but he isn't getting any.

And so the world turns... :v:

I guess I should've mentioned that I wasn't going to pop the question until at least NEXT August.

And to answer these:

I'm over 21.
I didn't lose my virginity to her.
I've had 2 other relationships that have lasted 2+ years with no inkling to be bound to that person.

Why do you ask the question now then?
2007-12-03, 11:08 AM #72
maybe starting to save up for the ring?

If you feel the same way in August, then I say go for it.
yay for not posting much ever
2007-12-03, 1:09 PM #74
If you're planning on a long engagement any way, I'd say go for it (especially if you're waiting till august just to bring it up). If during your engagement you guys get to know each other better and decide it won't work out, nothing lost. (Well, unless you're wasting a lot of money on a ring, etc... but then that's your own fault.) More or less a Pascal's wager kind of thing.
I proposed to my girlfriend a little less than half a year into our relationship, and 5 years later we're still on the same trajectory. In retrospect, I was way too young to be asking that kind of question, and I didn't really know her that well, but thing's've worked out pretty well. Having that on the horizon has certainly made the long-distance phase of our relationship easier, if nothing else.

In summary: married at 6 months, probably not a good idea. Engaged at 6 months, not terrible if you're willing to concede it may not work out.
