The crew apparently called it Clover.

I saw some other forum calling it "Mr Grumpy Pants"

I prefer Clover over that

I'm pretty sure it was a nuke, or some other form of disastrous end-all bomb. If you listen carefully to what the solider tells them, he basically says that if they don't make it out of the city by 6:00 AM then they're going to die because the military is going to initiate their last resort plan, which is inferred as the destruction of Manhattan. This is also again restated when the helicopter crashes and you hear on the radio that "the target is still active", and that they're going to initiate the plan.

Right before they drop the bomb, the sirens begin going off in the city. This is to let you know that this isn't just some ordinary bombs being dropped by planes, because they've been doing that all night. This is a nuke, and the city is going to be destroyed. The monster may have survived, I guess, but regardless the military was going to go to any length to try and stop it. The title, Cloverfield, is most likely just the military's code name for the project, and probably has absolutely nothing to do with clovers growing in a field.

Again, I refer back to my scale of bombs.

Big Bomb - Destroys a building or three
Really ****ing Big Bomb - Could easily take out Manhattan and close surrounding areas
Nuke - Oops, there goes North and possibly parts of Central Jersey, too.

Yes, I understand the scale of destruction that would follow an explosion of that magnitude, but realistically if something like that was alive and wasn't dying from regular bombs, missles, and gunfire, wouldn't it be probable that they'd have to sacrifice Manhattan, New Jersey, and possibly parts of the surrounding states and water to destroy the beast that could potentially do even more damage?

I mean for all they know the little creatures that came off the monster could grow up to be more giant monsters. I'm sure when faced with a problem such as this, there would have to be some sort of no turning-back plan, after trying to use all of your best ammunition against the creature, and seeing it still standing, something has to end it, regardless of the potential threat and cost.

Not to downplay how absolutely devastating nuclear weapons are, some of you are over-estimating how large their effective blast radius is.

According to Reeves, in this interview :

The key to it is that the monster was a baby. The monster was suffering from separation anxiety and was absolutely disoriented and pissed, "where's mommy?", and terrified. That was the most important aspect of the creature. Not only was he furious and in a rage but he was scared, because to me there's nothing scarier than something huge that's spooked. If you're at the circus and the elephants are going nuts you don't want to be near them. We talked with Neville about the idea of how when a horse gets spooked you see the whites under the bottom of its eye. He fleshed out those sort of details. We talked about wanting the monster to be different in that it was white. All these different aspects which were important to us. It developed in many different ways and it came down to what Neville was doing which was amazing.

True, but a nuke would take out NYC, Hoboken, Jersey City, Queens, Brooklyn, the bronx, and parts of lower new york. Especially if they were trying to blow up a ****ing huge monster

Just a note : Christ I didn't even see this movie and I'm hugely intrigued by it. I probably wont see it though, because I a huge sissy when it comes to female dying on the screen, and the idea of watching a woman splode really isn't my thing.

Also, I claim this monster is in fact

Well thats not too bad I guess. Maybe I'll see it.

But really, did anyone try throwing a not-magnet at the thing? I bet it would stick.

I present a bomb-less situation here. Create a giant not-magnet, capture the beast, tying up to the next star destroyer leaving the planet, send it packing back to Mon Calamari.

(wait, what?)

From what I gather its a blood infection.

Is this really the monster??? Because that looks like something taken out of Power Rangers.

I think you guys are underestimating the size of Manhattan and overestimating the yield of some of our small tactical nukes. Even though lots of areas would be contaminated, there are nukes with a small enough yield to contain the majority of the blast damage to the island.

IMO, this could be some cool ****, especially if the continuations are just about how this monster was just the beginning.

Either thats a bad shot, or its design is pathetically bland. Like I said, it reminds me of something out of the Power Rangers or Evil beetle overlord show thing. Too slick, humanoid and plastic looking.

As least in that shot.

This seemed much cooler to me : [http://wayangtopia.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/cloverfield-monster-picture.jpg]

It's a bad shot. Looks much cooler when A) It's not viewed through a camera, and B) not viewed at 2 frames a second.

Also: Spook is right. There are things called "Tactical Nukes" which are designed to not-wipe out entire cities. Just.. smaller towns. >.>

Where did those fire balls the monster unleash come from in the beginning of the attack?

Itd have to be a really small nuke. Go on google maps and look how close Brooklyn and Jersey are. New York is big, but its not incredibly wide.

I thought that stuff was just debris from the explosion.

I too would have liked a different ending, like the end of a briefing or something like that.

Most tactical nukes have variable yields that are determined during prep. They can be fairly small.

It is over. What we saw was file footage recovered well after that battle. A significant amount of time has definitely passed.

Yeh. By the time they were able to do the kind of clean up necessary to find the camera, the monster would have been long gone. If it were still at large those resources would have been some where else.

I thought the movie was ok, but the characters were really, really annoying. I wasn't sorry at all to see them die. Rob was the only guy who was tolerable. Lily was awful.

I don't think they were very consistent with the monster's size. Most of the shots showed him to be about a half to a third the size of the skyscrapers, but after the thing is bombed, it lashes out at them, even though they are at least at twice the altitude of any building.

Also, it was unbelievably strong. Nothing could take that punishment. Not even a cockroach, were it that size. And this clearly didn't have close to the protection of a cock roach.
2008-01-21, 5:32 PM #70
I didn't enjoy this movie so much at the time, but the more I think about it the more impressed I am.

I actually really wish they hadn't shown the monster so much. I think it would've been cool to keep simply showing bits at a time and only see it in full view once. That way you can still terrify yourself with your own imagination.

I didn't like the scene on the field much at all. Well, here's the creature, right here in front of you, in full view in broad daylight. See above point to clearly understand my feelings on the matter.

Marlena's demise was very disturbing to me. Poor girl.

One part I thought could have been done far better was the "night vision" part in the tunnels. Way too predictable; didn't surprise or frighten me at all. Imagine how much creepier it would have been to have them flip on the night vision only to catch a glimpse of a creature as it runs off to hide behind something? And for that matter, if you didn't actually know what it was that was in the tunnel with them (eg: if the news report had been cut off at "There's something falling off of the creature" or something)?

Overall: Best monster movie I've seen in a long, long time.

It crouches and stands. I figured that while it was moving it was bent over.

It's a horror/sci-fi movie. Pretty much necessary you suspend disbelief for it.

Acharjay - I thought the night vision part was great. I didn't actually notice the creatures on the ceiling for a good 1-2 seconds. I do agree it would have been better to introduce them in the tunnel, and then they hear the newscast of "things falling off the monster" though.

That scene reminded me of something out of RE4...

I suppose it's possible. They were quite close together, and if only one small section had crumbled, assuming the other tower was strong enough to support the added weight, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Not that it would be bloody likely, mind you.
