Fine.

Wait around.

Life is VERY SHORT. It will pass you buy quicker than you think.

Unless you are quadriplegic, then life passes by pretty slowly.

Various phobias stop me from that and it absolutely pisses the hell out of me. I cannot walk up to a complete stranger, male or female and just strike up a conversation. I just paralyze in fear. I would REALLY love to get over that fear but it has been most...stubborn.

Striking up a conversation with a stranger is easy if you have something to say. That's where life experiences and empathy come in handy.

shoot them with a dart, then run up and ask if they need any help, or perhaps the antidote you just so happen to be carrying.

You've saved their life and now have something in common.

I was thinking that he could try sneaking up on a pretty lady, choking her unconcious and then give her CPR and fake heroism.

Choking would leave marks, a well placed dart would just get brushed off.

That would probably help me out tremendously. I think that's my fear. I have nothing to say and I'm afraid, I'll sound like a bumbling idiot.

I agree. While self topic lock is definately the lesser of two evils, it's kinda.. dumb.

I mean, have you ever tried locking a discussion in real life because it veered of course? Doesn't work that way does it.

Well, chloroform is pretty useful in that area too.

Yes, that is social anxiety. The best way to get over your fear of striking up conversations with strangers is to just do it a lot, so you'll get used to it.

http://www.succeedsocially.com/ This site should be quite helpful.
I would also recommend searching http://ask.metafilter.com for questions you can relate to. Askmefi has probably been one of the biggest influences in getting over some of my own social anxiety.

Sounds like it could be. I have similar problems...

And that's weird Flirb. After reading Gandy's post I thought "Hey, I have that social success site in my bookmarks I can link." But you did it first. :(

Hah, well, unfortunately it's one of those things where you have to do it before you can do it well. You know, you can't force it, you have to just be friendly and go with it. If you don't have anything in common with someone, then you don't have to talk to them much. But you do have to talk to them to find out if you have anything to talk about.

Working with people in groups seems to be the best way, for me anyway. I'm not so good with random encounters for the same reasons you state, but in a group working on something, it all comes natural. So...join groups. Lab groups, clubs, whatever.

There is no such thing as falling gracefully out of a wheelchair.

Because that kind of falling is always hilariously!

How so? I'm assuming you just mean the succeedsocially site. Threads on askmefi tend to have advice from many different people, often with conflicting viewpoints, as well as many real-life anecdotes. It's astoundingly enlightening.

Well, of course pretty much anyone who has the sort of social difficulties the site aims to help solve will relate to something on the site. It's written to be able to help as many such people as possible, so it makes sense to be like that.
