It must have something to do with the forum scripts and protection from possible exploits.

Make sure you remove it every time you paste the line, otherwise we'll end up with tons of extra spaces (see how yours has two).

I have to ask though -- why would the swimmer ever move TOWARDS the shark? And why would the boat ever move away?

The space appears because the forum software needs to keep people from leaning on a single key to make the page scroll horizontally with spam. So it inserts spaces into extra long "words". You can trick it by inserting a bogus forum tag (I did "[ b ][ /b ]") in the middle. Just don't tell the real spammers. Shh.
