I have taken the time to write a program to answer this question, at least, for me.

EDIT: Image fixed, damn JPG compression, and if anyone wants the actual program, just ask and I'll send it.

Explanation? .999 is a limited number, you'd need a truly infinite series of .99999999999999999999999999999999999999999 etc for it to be equal to 1.

You cannot equate two floating point numbers. Floating point inaccuracies render the result meaningless. The best you can do is test the difference against [-ε, ε], which (in this case) will return the expected result: that they are equal.

There are about a trillion proofs for 0.999~ == 1 using a trillion different methods (arithmetical, algorithmic, limit, integral, etc.) so pfft
