Does 0.999~ equal 1?

Yes they are, in the same way that 0.333~ = 1/3. Didn't you ever learn that in school? Public schooling is failing us.

I always thought of fractions as exact values, while their decimal versions were only approximations.

For the very reason that:

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 = 1

However:

0.33 + 0.33 + 0.33 = 0.99

By that reasoning, no matter how infite you make the decimals, they will NEVER reach the whole value.

But it's cool, I reckon you guys are just trolling.

x/3 = 0.333~

Solve for x.

You make a mistake in saying "no matter how infinite" because it shows a distinct misunderstanding of INFINITY.

So wait, it's two different numbers because of how you write it?

I'm not a big math guy. I'm putting that out there. But it seems to me "0.99~ = 1" is less some holy equation than it is proof of a flaw in the system, probably in how we express numbers.

But that's a philosophical take on a mathematics issue.

Except that's true in any number system.

Binary : 0.1111111~ = 1.
2008-12-06, 6:45 PM #52
Well ok whatever. So 0.9 = 1.

I don't really care, I'll never need to care.

I thought binary had only 1 and 0, with nothing in between.

also, does 0.99~ have any practical use besides confusing and frustrating college students?

Binary is just another base. We use base 10 because (presumably) we have 10 fingers and it makes counting easy. It's no different in base 2 (binary), 3, 5, 50, 100, 232135 whatever.

No. 0.33, 0.333, 0.3333, 0.333333333333333333 are all approximations of 1/3. 0.33~ is exactly equal to it.

Think of it this way. Any real number can be expressed as the division of two other real numbers.

For all real numbers c, there exists a real number a and a real number b such that a/b = c. Also, diving two real numbers a and b will result in another real number. In this case, 1/3 = 0.33~

I think it's perhaps a little immature to create a thread yearly just to show how some people are wrong about something. Makes you question who is truly the clever one.

Call me stung but I find the principle behind the thread questionable.

since when does the ~ after the number mean repeating...I thought it meant some other crap.

it should be 0.999... or possibly 0.999r but since when does ~ mean repeating....gggrrr

I recall seeing it somewhere, it's probably improper notation. According to Wikipedia I should probably use 0.(999) in the absence of better notation.

Even if it didn't equal one, it's close to 1 that it wouldn't matter.

WRONG!

If you don't understand that .999... = 1 exactly, you have a fundamental misconception of infinity. If that's not true, x/(infinity) does not equal zero. If that's not true, all of math basically fails, and by extension logic itself.

Fuzzy math ftw!

I had another proof that would essentially make any two numbers equal by factoring incorrectly.
