Worst FPS you've ever played

HL2 was dumb in that from the start of the game you could look up and guess where the final level would be, and then you spent the rest of the game HEADED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. Then right at the end you'd be whisked back to where you knew you'd end up all along..

That strikes me as a really weird thing to ***** about. I'm legitimately surprised you cared.

I cared because it made the entire game feel like an obstacle rather than a fun experience.

The whole game was a small handful of fun set pieces separated by extremely tedious vehicle bits.

Yeah the vehicle bits were a bit odd, as if they werent needed. I found it odd that for an eastern european city it was filled with americans...

I think you guys are just making stuff up. Halo, HL, there is nothing wrong with those games. They are pretty popular so they must be doing something right, I don't see any of you guys producing work like that.

Unreal Tournament for the original XBox was a terrible FPS.. no single player campaign (not that UT had much of a 'campaign'), terrible controls, and just a bad port all together.

Wait, so popularity and the fact we can't make multi-million dollars games nullify criticisms of certain titles?

Ugh. I knew the "you can't do it better" line would find it's way in here. I hate when people use that as an argument; it's absolutely useless, and has no merit.
2008-12-31, 10:07 AM #47
I guess this thread is more like "post FPS games you didn't like" and I still think Quake 3 was professional work that worked but it's still the worst and most unthrilling FPS game I've ever played.

It's just not very good criticism.. more like opinions and I'm not saying they are wrong, but comon now.. just nit picking (or complaining, or whining) just like nit picking my post

I just didnt see what all the Halo hype was about... It was ok but nothing special.

Halo is a solid series but nothing amazing. I think it's more that it was a big name shooter for the console that was actually good. PCs had superior shooters many years prior.

I don't think I've actually attempted to play the single player in all 3 more than 10 times for Halo. (I've never finished it) Multiplayer is where it's at for that.

Note that no-one actually listed Halo as worst fps (except once as a jole).
We have just been saying it's over-rated, it's not the awesome be all and end all fps game that a lot of people make it out to be. In fact it's very far from it.

Oh my God! I know! It was a piece of ****. They basically took the Wolfenstein port to SNES, changed the textures and sound effects, and slapped a new name on it.

The game was fun at parties though, just because it was so re-goddamn-diculous.

Call of Duty: World at War. Seriously, treyarch, you have to do more than just take the last game in the series and slap on a new layer of paint. The single player was the most boring of any CoD I've played so far. It comes to a point where taking ideas directly from Enemy at the Gates becomes a bad idea.
DO NOT WANT.

Turok 1 and 2 were rather excellent (Turok 2 less so cause of framerate issues, but it was beautiful at the time!).

Every Turok game following? Absolute trash.

Have you had the chance to play the new one yet? It looked interesting but I have neither the game systems for it nor a computer ballsy enough to play it. If so, was it terrible or decent?

My brother just got it the other day.

The graphics are beautiful, the voice work is rather well done, the production overall is pretty damn good.

Then you get to the gameplay, and it all goes to hell. It's quite possibly the worst Turok ever in terms of gameplay. Most weapons are absolutely trash, the difficulty is insanely hard, checkpoints are random and rarely where you need them, the dinosaurs are annoying as hell, and the multiplayer isn't even worth discussing.

I would have to go with Resistance 1 for PS3.

I loved the game. I loved the story. I loved playing the game but there are a few aspects about it that I absolutely hated.

I'm still buying the sequel. I love co-op multiplayer singer campaigns.

I just hated the fact that I could put an entire clip into an enemy and they not even flinch. Seriously, annoying. And several of the guns weren't worth using. The only cool guns is the M6A2 which you start with and the sniper rifle.

The most dissapointing game I've played is definetly Deus Ex 2. The worst, however, would probably be Corridor 7: Alien Invasion. A terrible Wolfenstein 3D clone.

The Phantom Menace. One long hateful jumping puzzle compounded by suicidal companion AI who would help you guard them by running between you and oncoming waves of foes.

I'll agree with the fact that it was a horrific game but it's not an FPS. Not even in the same sense that Gears of War could be considered one.

I played a game called Nam once, it had about 4 levels, awful sprites, terrible animation and just generally plain sucked donkey plums.

Oh, and Halo (all three) weren't my cup of tea, but were bearable, and I have to agree with Joncy about HL2. Turgid, absolutely turgid.

EDIT:

HL2 was pretty boring. Thank god for ep1 and ep2 (which I found to be an improvement.)

Worst FPS... hmm...

Hard to say. I'll get back to you on that one.

I remember some HL mods were particularly bad. Frontline Force was billed as a mix between Quake-style matches and tactical shooters. A return to "fun." Except the guns were awful and it was impossible to get a team to work together. It took multiple magazines worth of ammo to kill anyone, so it was like Quake, if there were no other guns than the original pea shooter. The mod self-destructed around 2004, I think.

Opera was another one. Awful interface, awful controls, awful guns. All the dive moves required another keybind, so half the keyboard was taken up with movement keys. There were some pointless keys added as well, like a key to pull out two small pistols (that were useless). The guns were weak and inaccurate, and some strange choices like a lever-action Colt carbine. The scoring system was wonky and was supposed to award more points for more stylish kills. However, since it was too difficult to pull off kills while diving, the only viable playstyle was to crouch in a corner with the carbine taking potshots for a single point a kill. Luckily, The Specialists, another action style mod came out shortly after and was much better.

There was also a Matrix themed mod that only had one map. That was dumb.

On the flip side (before this thread falls over from FAIL) Painkeep was an awesome Quake mod.

I think the worst game was Area 51 for the PC.

You move the camera with the mouse.

You move around the level with WASD.

You fire your gun by pressing the enter key.

You cannot change these controls.

WTF.
