The New Massassi - Coming Eventually

I assume each user account page has to be approved? Like a minimal amount of work? I don't think it would be a good idea to have a bunch of profiles with nothing on them (which is another problem with JKHub) acting like empty shells.

Is there still going to be still Screenshot of the Day sort of thing on the main page? When it comes to forums, I still think a showcase forum sticking around would be a good idea so the regular community and the editing people aren't totally separated. Like "meet the people" deal where you can get direct feedback/ideas/criticism other than messages left in user profiles?

I agree on the idea of sorting by engine because we would be an editing community, not a game discussion group. Even if an engine gets updated, the popular ones remain within a sort of lineage (ex. Unreal and Unreal 3?).

No, not really. Blank user profiles won't be much of a concern. Users who do not submit content will not be easily visible by that very nature. Without submitting content, people can only visit your profile via the forums or by knowing your username offhand to search for it. If necessary, I'll throw into their profile their "latest posts" to fill the page up somewhat, but I don't really think this will be much of a concern.

Speaking of approval processes in general though, these are things that will need approval:

A. Requesting a subforum for a project (must meet various criteria, such popularity, number of members on project, activity, etc).
B. Users who have been flagged (usually by other users) will not be able to upload any content until they are approved.
C. New games/other executables. This is more of an anti-virus and copyright measure than anything (all files will be scanned by an AV before being accepted and posted regardless).
D. Deleting published content. While we will heed any request for removal of content by a user, it will need to be checked up by an admin to ensure that the user is truly the original artist, and not someone making use of a stolen account.
E. Various other issues with problem users, the usual.

In general though, the site will be built to be self-moderated. I plan on having a staff of moderators to handle specific sections, but I don't expect them to always be able to see and hear everything that goes on. Relying on other users seems to be a usable method of policing, as long as it's done sensibly.

Screenshot of the Day will return in something called a "Featured Update" area, which will be a rotating selection of various items. I haven't decided how exactly the items that appear here will be decided (whether by user nomination or a moderator), but it will come back in a much expanded form, to cover the various types of content we will have (projects(mods)/models/maps/textures/tutorials/games/etc)

The basic concept behind the filter will be as such:

[_Search_Term_Here_]
[Type_Of_Content_Dropdown \/] (Tutorials/maps/projects/games/ALL/etc)
[Game_Engine_Dropdown \/] (Unreal, Quake, ALL, NONE (for miscellaneous), etc)
[Specific_Game_Dropdown] (Unreal 1, Unreal2k4, Unreal 3, NONE (for generic only))

As you can tell, you can be as specific as you like, and artists can also, when tagging their content. The reason I offer specific game selections is because there is a lot of content that will only apply to a specific version of a game (think JO vs JA). Meanwhile, there is also a lot of content that can be applied to just about any game in the engine (think Source).

When an artist submits their content, they can choose to file it under only the specific game it was intended, or under an entire engine if it was usable by all. And when users filter for this, they can search for anything under that engine or a specific game.

It may seem like a lot, but it'll go fast, and it will allow a user to find what they want without a lot of extra clicks (after selecting a game engine, only games under that engine will appear, for example).

I suppose the best way we can help is to pretend this thread never happened. ;)
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I bet this would have been done 2 months ago if CM were basing it on an existing CMS

If I'd done it on an existing CMS no one would be using it, either.

I am using a framework. It's called low priorities. :omg:

Great on Echoman for keeping the front page updated. I saw if I could still log in, and I can.

Can we at least redo the front page, same graphical elements, remove the sidebar, but with an RSS for the news? I'm not talking about any overhauls or revamps, just a basic rehash that's a little more modern? I'm sure Detty, MB, Cool Matty, or even I could toss something together in no-time.

I can agree to that.
