Street Fighter IV

Wow, what a fun game! Has anyone else bought it so far for the 360? If you have and would like to play some against me, you are most welcome to drop me a message over LIve (Gunman Jep) or over here on massassi.

I just picked it up today and was planning to play for an hour or two before getting back to my writing. Lo and behold I've been playing for near 4 hours straight.

Overall, the game feels like an upgrade from Street Fighter IV rather than an entire new title, however, in my eyes that is not a bad thing. Its nice to see all the good old characters from my childhood gaming return in this fast paced, exciting game. The overall gameplay is similar to SFIIT, with additions, such as powered-up special moves and ultra combos.

So far I've beaten the game on easy with Ryu and Blanka, and medium with Ryu. The game is fun and appears to be well balanced so far. The online gameplay is overall easy to access and fun. Its important to pick your fights however, not so much in terms of opponent strengths but rather opponent latency. Bad internet connections quickly ruin the fight for both players. That aside, though, its great and fun to get out there and beat on some real players instead of CPU powered pixels!

Graphics themselves are excellent and flashy. I dig the new style partial cel-shading style. Its very interesting. The animations are fast and flow well.

Get the game and come fight with me!

I'm still trying to find a character I jive with. I've been enjoying chin-li alot, but some of her moves are tough to pull off with the 360 controller. I've played around with guile, e honda and ryu, but no one seems to fit my style.

I'm fishstickz13 on live, and am always up for a game

I suck at it. Can't do any of the moves consistently, can't do many of them at all. Can't beat the game on any difficulty.

My friend got it for PS3 2 days ago and has literally been playing nonstop for 48 hours and I think he's unlocked every single character and color already and beaten the game w/ every character etc.

Unbelievable
(Btw he has a stick for the PS3 that he uses rather than the controller ... console controllers suck for fighters <_<)

I really like how they upped Gouki in this game cuz I loved his combo-ness in 3rd strike but he took damage like a ***** and wasn't near top-tier ... now he still takes damage like a ***** but has better defensive options (his teleport is SO good now ... almost no start-up) and is definitely around top tier.

watch this awesome gouki player

(I feel sorry for the Gief player who got timed out on his ultra and lost :X)

I'm a shoto player so I'm also happy that Gouki and Ryu have returned to a place of dominance (altho it's too bad Ken dropped down a few levels).

Sorta frustrates me how once again Sagat is like uber, though. Sagat is always freakin uber. wtf.

I was actually really satisfied with ken. I managed to pull off all the same moves as the SNES and beat my friends around senseless til they forced me to be someone else.

All in all SF4 is defenitely worth the buy.

I can't wait until I can get this game. Then again Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5 are also just around the corner.

I cannot for the life of me play Crimson Viper. I had to take her to Easiest to be able to beat the game and unlock Cammy. Otherwise even on Easy, I just couldn't get near Seth.

I took Sakura through the game to unlock Dan. I actually really enjoyed Sakura's fighting style

Unlocking Gouken is insane. Especially considering how god damn cheap Seth is.

It's annoying to watch but it's the correct strategy for Gouki (takes massive damage) against Gief (deals massive damage but needs to grab you first)

The Gouki player (K.O.) does a pretty nice job of baiting the Gief player and getting in the dive kick-tatsumaki-shoryu combos.

He just ****ed up on the shun goku satsus cuz he was too far away

I think I'm going to stick with Chun-Li, I just need to work on getting her ultra / super combos down, they're pretty hard to pull off on the 360 controller.

Jeppybuns, I think I tried to communicate to you through the haze of beer last night that I did indeed have SFIV, and would like to hook up with any and all for gaming :)

On topic, I just need to unlock Seth and Gouken, but haven't had a large enough slice of XBox time to do so.

And yes, Seth hates Crimson Viper. He's normally (on the easiest setting) not too bad with most characters, but he just rapes her senseless. It's mental.
2009-02-22, 7:10 AM #16
Yea, he's an odd character that Seth. I'm never a big fan, in any game, of too many things that cause you to lose control of your character for long stretches of time. I don't have issues with any other characters, even the long and devastating Ultra Combos that you can't do anything against if you get hit by it, but Seth just has too many freaking things that cause loss of control. Not in the first phase, but once you've defeated him once and he goes into overload it gets a little insane.

Note : I didn't realise that we could unlock Seth so I still have to unlock him, hehe.

To unlock him, just beat arcade with everyone (incuding gouken)

Aahhh gotcha

Anyone up for any matches to day? I'd be available now and for the next few hours.

(I'm not currently online because I'm writing, but I often alt-tab to this thread to check if someone wants to play. I'll be able to get on live quickly)

Have you played the Trail / Challenge Mode thingy Detty? It's useful for teaching you some of the basics (then very quickly it becomes very hard, but that's not the point).

Playing with Jep is fun :D

Seth is the one thing keeping me from completely loving the hell out of this game. Fighting every other character is really enjoyable, but Seth is just so cheap that it pisses me off. I'm working on beating it with everyone on Medium (beat it with a few people on Easy, then I figured I should ramp up the difficulty). I have loads of fun till I get to Seth, then it's just "ugh". Of course, it wouldn't be a fighting game without a cheap and rage-inducing final boss.

Definitely love the game overall though, and I've not played a SF game really much at all since the original SF2 in the arcade and on the SNES.
2009-02-22, 11:22 AM #24
Lucikly when you unlock Seth he's nerfed to hell. I want to play more but Izzy has control of the tellybox atm.

I did the first level of the challenges, but I couldn't manage to do all the specials for the second level. I don't know how long you're supposed to hold holds for, and I always end up jumping rather than doing the moves.

The 360's controller is SHOCKING for inputs I find. I blew more money than I should have on a proper stick... Holds (charges) tend to be circa 52 frames at 60fps (give or take 2 frames) so round about 1 second.

After playing a little online I have to say I'm shocked at how smooth the games I've had with Fishy and Jeppy are. There is input delay which will shaft the best of the best, but I doubt I'll ever notice.

My main criticism, especially after playing HD Remix is that the double blind character picking isn't there. I beat a guy who challenged me in a (non-ranked) match, and then he challenged me again (perhaps he just hit Quick Game) but as soon as he saw my gamertag he dropped. On top of that, there's the whole "wait to see who your opponent picks" game now, which is tedious. Luckily, I main Vega who is now considered bottom tier so I just pick straight away.

I usually just go for Ryu, and from time to time Blanka. I've been trying others and while Ken and Sagat are close behind, I can't quite do as well as I do on my prime two.

Man I'm going to have to plan my time very carefully and strictly follow the schedule if I want to be able to play this game AND get some writing done. This weekend turned from a writing-focused weekend to a sf4-focused weekend and time just flew by. >.<

Jep was kicking my ***, and once I started to find my stride, he bailed. True story.

(Jep, tons of fun, we gotta do it again.)

I think I need to find a new character. It seems like my attacks as Chun-li do about 50% damage as comparable attacks from other characters, so it takes twice as many attacks to take someone down, and my attacks always get superseded.

If you like her charge routines, in addition to her wacko kick, you might totally like Blanka. His roll attacks are charges and his electricity is similar to Chun-Li, except you spam punch instead. He has incredible reach and seems to hit like a truck. Only issue with him is a lack of projectile attack (Fireball-type). Honda is similar but he's a fat ugly sumo wrestler. :P

I for one can figure out how to play Vega for the life of me, haha

I had a total blast playing with you though. Most of my victories were close calls, so I'd say we're close. I need to get better with my dragon punches. I have a terrible time getting them off. It took my near 8 matches tonight before I finally got the hang of them again. Its wierd. I picked up the game yesterday and for the first few hours of playing I had no issues with dragon punch. Then I somehow managed to get so bad habit into my muscle memory and I keep messing them up now.

As a long term goal, I intend to make my main character M. Bison. I've always loved that character, but I direly need to get used to doing charge attacks. Horizontal ones I'm slowly getting the hang of, but vertical ones I can never get off.

I should really unlock all the characters first, I think. From what I've seen of Sakura, I think I might like her, or maybe Feilong.

I heard the special moves are harder on the Xbox360 because the controller can only detect 8 directions, instead of the ps3 controller's 24 directions.
My favorite JKDF2 h4x:
EAH XMAS v2
MANIPULATOR GUN
EAH SMOOTH SNIPER

The game only needs 8 directions, so it shouldn't matter. Basically you need a decent stick OR the MadCatz controller (with a decent D-Pad in the Saturn/MegaDrive 6 button ilk).

Fishy - I'd stay away from Fei to begin with: he loses woefully to fireball characters and unfortunately Ryu and Sagat are the two top-most picked characters online atm :/

I need to practice my combos with Vega, and get his super/ultra stick motion down. I've not pulled it off online yet (Jeppy blocked it the one time I got it out!). My life is now in a state of cat-like readiness for any free time to slide in some practice :D
2009-02-22, 10:20 PM #37
If they have M. Bison, I will play. I am an M. Bison, Ryu/ken player. And does anybody else have the urge to yell ' PSYCHO CRUSHER!!!!!!!' when you smoke someone with that as a finish? I do.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Not really, but I was chuffed when I caught Jep with Bison's ultra finish that went through his fireball as Ryu ;)

It's teh pretty :D

Holy s*** this game is way too complicated sounding for me, someone who grew up on Soul Calibur. .(
DO NOT WANT.
2009-02-22, 10:45 PM #40
It's not that hard really. I'm about to get picked up to go to work, but I can jot down the main features when I get there in an hour or so.

It's mainly:

Ultra (revenge) meter gets charged by being hit. When over half full lets you do your ONE ultra move.

Super meter gets charged by you doing damage. You can burn 1/4 of it on making one of (a set number of) your ordinary special moves into an EX (stronger) version, and when it's full you can do your ONE super move.

Then there's focus attacks, but I've not quite got my head around the mechanics of that yet.
