Just got back from seeing it now,
I've never read the book and I absolutely loved it. I did a bit of reading up of just the characters beforehand on wiki, trying to skip possible spoilers and such but went into the movie with what I guess was a pretty good clue of the story and plot but nothing concrete.
Rorschach I feel was done absolutely spot on and even if he wasn't, for me he was the linchpin of the movie.
For some reason I was expecting a little more respective from niteowl, Ozymandias and Silk after the ending but like I said, I've never read the novel so I don't know if it is in there or not, maybe the leaving it open for us to think about is the point.
The whole "penis" issue is just stupid, if it bothers you grow up, if reviewers are moaning about it they need a kick in the balls or whatever, it's really a none issue. If Dr. Manhattan had been a women I doubt there would be half as many complaints, just a bunch of women rights people calling the movie sexiest or something and all the male reviewers going, "yeah Dr. Manhattan was hot" or some **** like that.
I loved the movie, it gives more than any other superhero movie I've seen, the Dark Knight, which people hold in such high regard, is a damn good movie no doubt, but I don't find myself thinking about it as much as the Watchmen. The moral standing of the Dark Knight is handed to you on a platter and shoved in your face, with the Watchmen it is more like you are at a buffet and every time you reach for something you notice something else you'd like instead.
Looking at the choice Ozymandias made from a distance, the argument of "the means justify the end" is understandable and anyone in their sane mind should make the same choice. But for me that is not how you should make the choice, the question we are posed and asked to question ourselves is what if we were heroes, the people trying to make a difference whatever way we can, the ones for who each innocent life saved is paramount above all else.
Rorschach for all his instability and apparent insanity was routed to the cause of saving the innocent and punishing the bad more than any of the others.
Damn I could go on with stuff I loved about this film but I'll stop as I'm just rabbling now.
People of our generation should not be subjected to mornings.
