Windows 7 RC

Loaded it up a few hours ago - never tried the beta so this is my first time messing with 7.

Did you have to do anything special to get the "aero peek" to work? Can't seem to get it to do anything here.

Also, I was able to install from a USB drive, which is so awesome. Anything else awesome I should check out?

Only things I know about are the mouse gestures ..

It's enabled in the beta .. can't help you on the peak.

What do you mean it doesn't work? It should activate 1) when you alt-tab, and 2) when you hover over taskbar items. Try alt-tabbing slowly and every window except for the "peeked" one should become transparent. If not, then

btw, where did you get it? Torrent?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I thought it was getting released to MSDN on the 30th and everyone else sometime during the first week in May.

Wait a second... You put the file (the .iso) onto your USB drive and installed it from there? Or you installed it to your USB drive and are loading the OS from there?

If it's the latter, I want to know HOW so I can replicate.

I thought the RC wasn't coming out until may 5th, someone on this site said that

So I just tried to launch IE for the first time ...
I always hide the IE icon as much as possible I use IE about 5 times a year.

So I type the url in the folder windows. Doesn't appear you can launch IE this way in 7? Anyone else try that?

Peek is working now - but it wasn't before. And yeah, I got it from a torrent. I figure public release is soon enough, and I'll just get a key when that happens and activate it.

It's pretty nice, starts up fast, runs faster than Vista did (or at least feels like it does.)

I just did that and it brought the site up in Firefox. That was unexpected!

Is there any real reason to get this over the beta?
2009-04-29, 3:21 PM #18
.... it's newer, has more bug fixes?

2009-04-29, 3:30 PM #19
Well I have the beta right now, but is it such a giant leap that I should format and install immediantly or wait untill public release?
2009-04-29, 3:37 PM #20
I didn't see any new features. The only one I am excited about is the XP Virtual Machine integration but the beta for that (which will only work with the RC) isn't out yet.

2009-04-29, 3:39 PM #21
I'm screwed when the beta runs out.
Need an OS ..

A lot of the fixes/improvements were under the hood, minor ones or ones in specialty areas (like the TIP for tablets, which has been greatly improved) ... check out the Engineering W7 Blog (google) if you're interested in seeing what they updated.

If anyone was planning on putting it on your Macbook, don't. That is, unless you don't need to rightclick. The trackpad driver is completely shot.

The reason you're supposed to get this is to find and report bugs and help MS fix as many of them as possible so when the RTM is out it's not :carl:

I hope to god they get the Vista upgrade path right so I'm not gonna have to clean install when it comes out. Granted, the last time I did an upgrade was ME -> XP and that was probably the reason for its crappiness.

PROTIP: Immediately run the Apple Software Update after installing, because apparently there's a trackpad update that resolves this. Boot Camp won't prompt you to do this because it's STUPID.

Yeah, I'll just wait for that then format.
MS seems to really want to get info from a clean format.
2009-05-01, 8:39 PM #39
No, they want info from a Vista->W7 upgrade path.

And I'm hoping people listen to them and do this because I'd rather do a Vista->W7 upgrade on my tablet than clean install W7. And it'd be great if the upgrade weren't crap.
