Post your favorite lego sets!
2009-11-16, 12:18 PM #1
Inspired by the recent purchases thread, I decided to make a thread to post your favorite lego set(s) that you owned! My personal favorite was my 395 piece pirate island set. It included 3 booby traps, a jail, and a treasured crown... awesome. :awesome:

Years ago in some LEGO catalog or magazine I read a bit from a kid that wrote in and said he pitted the Imperial Guards against the pirates and the Imperial Guards always won. Not only were his LEGO plots hopelessly simple, he was a fascist.

The space sets were my favorite. Blacktron and M-tron mostly, also Space Police. Some of the ice stuff was cool. I had hundreds of sets from all sorts of LEGO brands inherited, many inherited from my brother, so I evolved my own style. I inherited original Blacktron and Futuron stuff from my brother, too.

This guy's massive Blacktron base is badass:

The M-tron magnet things were awesome, too.

I also had a lot of pirate stuff. I never got any of the larger ships that had one-piece, waterpoof hulls, though.

Oh, I would always look through my brother's old LEGO catalogs. I always really wanted the Futuron monorail.

Who else made their mom look for that 'piece' that you couldn't find all the time?
2009-11-16, 12:48 PM #10
Another two of my favorite sets came from the Fright Knights line, and the Classic Star Wars lines... (whoda thunk!)

My mom helped me for hours on end sift through piles looking for that damn piece that there was only 1 of and only came in 1 set.

You can never forget that sound, and the raw feeling your hands had after hours of sifting through it.

Realistic LEGOs? You pussy. :colbert:

Oh man, I totally forgot about the medieval stuff! That was a favorite, too. I remember this one scene, I don't know if it was a kit or just something I saw in a magazine, but it was a little blacksmith's workshop near a river. It had a little paddle mechanism that went "into" the water, and when you spun it, a little mechanism caused a hammer on the other end to lift up and drop down on the anvil.

Also, sifting was annoying. I would eventually get fed up and dump them out of the plastic containers we had, onto the carpet, which was much quieter and made things easier to find. Unfortunately you then had to put the pieces back in...

I never said I didn't like the other ones. That one just happens to be the set that got me into LEGO, so it's my favorite.

I had at least one set that had this minifig guy and his badass orange transparent chainsaw.

I loved this one - it had working lights, made sounds, AND the back opened up to slide the stretcher in. :awesome:

Ah! I remember the lights and sound. I can't remember what set it was from, but there was a black container that took a 9v battery. Some of the stubs were metal and you could transfer the power to other bricks that also had metal. I think there was even a 2x2 plate with wire going to another 2x2 plate to extend the range without a ton of bricks.

Oh man.. I wonder what set that was from ... I can't remember for the life of me.
2009-11-16, 2:29 PM #19
Here's my favorite. I also have a few more dozen sets, but not in boxes. I had a couple early pirates sets, but by now my collection is almost entirely Star Wars.

There's an internal truss structure to help with most of the weight distribution, but the upper decks under the bridge and up are mostly solid.

I have an animated .gif of the build, but it's too large to upload here. Took about 10.5 hrs the first time. Takes a few hours to disassemble, too.

37 inches long, weighs almost 20 lbs.

Lego should have an archived images of their old stuff.

And hell... even offer to sell some of it. Seems to me like it would be easy money. Back then all the stuff was original, so no legal troubles.

I had this pirate ship when I was younger.

And it was freaking awesome. Given how much these things sell for nowdays, I'm a little cut that I gave away my lego (and transformers) to the younger generation thinking that I was doing something nice.

Screw you kids. Give me back my lego.

I think I had that ship!
I remember a bunch of those flags floating around in my Lego bins..

I still have that Pirate Ship at my Parent's house, at least all the pieces theoretically still exist in the big chest full of Lego. I guess if I can find the instructions, I could sell it on.

I remember my dad buying that for me at K-Mart. "Shock Cycle" I think it's called. I must have been 5 or 6. I built it for my Kindergarten Science Fair Project.

Later on they made a red one that was a little more sleek, I used to race them in the backyard.

My favorites have been the Star Wars ones. I have some in my bedroom as decoration, in fact. Naboo Starfighter w/plaque, TIE Fighter, Jedi Starfighter, Slave I, B Wing, Y Wing, Lambda-class Shuttle.
