Perfect Dark
2010-02-27, 1:53 PM #1
I'm actually slightly surprised that I haven't seen this posted here yet. Perfect Dark, for those who don't know, was basically the pinnacle of FPSs on consoles when it was released virtually at the end of the Nintendo 64's life cycle. I believe I was playing through on the toughest difficulty and was deep in the game before reaching an area I had a very tough time getting past. I've been wanting to play it through again but don't really want to deal with having the console hooked up or the mediocre experience of playing with an emulator. Well, it's very soon to be released on Xbox Live Arcade and there is at least one trailer up for it. I'm definitely purchasing it.

Discuss and/or post other Xbox Live recommendations. On that note, Duke Nukem 3D is on sale for 400 points right now. I picked that up full price right when it came out and was playing that right before I left for my last deployment.

I've been waiting for this for like a year. And it's got online MP!

Very good game, shame that the prequel was meh. I would say that the gameplay mechanics were even better in the timesplitters games though. :P
nope.

Used to play this with uberslug and our neighbor, many lulz were had courtesy of the steerable rocket launcher

Goldeneye and PD were SO ahead of their time. I still fire up my N64 solely for those 2 games.

Pfft, who needs that when you have dual maulers and a farsight?
nope.
2010-02-27, 2:39 PM #7
The Farsight was way too powerful as far as I can remember.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I did not know this. Awesome.

I used to be anti PD and all about GE back in the day, until I recently played PD at a friend's house for 9 hours straight. Oh man it's so much fun.

I also really liked the TS2 level designer. I spent another weekend at a different friend's house building a bunch of massassi maps. Was that ever on PC?

PD evolved from GE, though. Glad that you came around, though. Better late than never!

Nein, it was on all 3 consoles at the time though.

And the level designer was just the same in all 3 games. :P

nope.

I have both PD and GE, yet I play GE much more often. Need to get the TS series for myself still, although I've played the heck out of them, too.

You can essentially unlock the entire GE multiplayer in PD.

Loved both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, played them both to death. Still have both and a working N64, actually. Plus, I thought Perfect Dark: Zero was pretty good, if only for the co-op mode.

Timesplitters 2 guys.
That game is the logical conclusion of that teams gameplay.
2010-02-27, 5:27 PM #17
God, I was waiting to see how that ended.

hahah that perfect dark commercial is so sexist
2010-02-27, 6:34 PM #19
While I am of all the games a bigger TimeSplitters 2 fan as I think that game was absolutely breathtakingly amazing, I am a huge fan of GoldenEye and appreciate being able to unlock it in Perfect Dark.

Unfortunately, I absolutely could not stand Perfect Dark on the N64. It was perhaps the one game I thought that the N64 really couldn't handle and the FPS just killed it for me. However, now that it is on XBLA, I look forward to being able to play through it now.

Not sure I agree but what's even better is the Conker commercial that shows up as a related video. Check it out. I have that game for both N64 and Xbox, which is compatible with the 360 as well.

Doom is pretty awesome as it has 4-player split screen co-op. I'd love some Doom 2 on Xbox Arcade, that was my favourite.

Is Serious Sam on Arcade?

Online MP is cool, except there's no way to get everyone to agree to not use Farsight's secondary fire.

I still consider PD to be the best FPS game to date, solely for it's incredibly vast amount of options that no other game today offers (by default). Seriously, from increasing the res from 320x240 to 640x480 to the vast challenges and configuration options in MP, it seriously has more to offer than almost any FPS today... it's kinda sad really :/

Can't wait to try the 360 one, hopefully they don't do anything to botch it... they already have leaderboards, which disapoints me (I don't feel like being told that I suck because some stat padder decided to be cheap or because bozo who NEVER gets off his 360 can brag about it), but other than that so far so good.

You realize it tracks slower than a player's walking pace, right? So unless you are yourself camping somewhere, it's not at all as devastating as you think.

I remember the days of youth when we would hook up an old projector and play 4 player Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart and Super Smash. Those might be some of the best times with video games I've ever had.

You realize you don't have to wait for it to track them? You can move the target yourself too. I used the "track" feature to find someone, and then moved the crosshair, lined up the shot, and fired - just like any sniper rifle.

Ask fishstickz. I was BOSS.

Sigh, why don't games support split screen much anymore?
And wheres a good kart racing game?

My 360 doesn't have a god damn expansion pak.

Also this thread gave me like 19 boners.

Goldeneye was a turd, we just didn't know any better. There's no crouch, and no jump, you cant walk off ledges, you can't run and aim at the same time (save for the terrible C up and down buttons)... Mines cause fire that kill through walls... and Oddjob.

I'm not saying it wasn't fun, it was, a LOT. But it's a horrible game in the end lol.

I never much got into PD, even though I have it. It's just a revamped 007 engine/mechanics.

Noob.

Crouch is Aim+C-Down. In PD, you can crouch to 2 levels. Holding it down in PD makes the screen go black so as to block out screen-peakers (that's what I figured it was for).

PD you can walk off ledges. You can run and aim at the same time with the C buttons if you're good, or you can swap the C buttons for movement and the stick for aim using another control setup (the later is pretty sweet once you get used to it).

Mines don't damage through walls in PD as far as I know. Never noticed in GE either, but I didn't play that one as often.

Jumping isn't a necessary feature. It's not important in a large variety of games. For example, Mass Effect 2 doesn't have jump at all. ;)

PD is more than a "revamped 007" game. It has an insane amount of options that GE didn't have, and it's the better game for it. I haven't seen you complain about the vast amount of games that are almost identical to their sequels, in terms of story, options, gun selection. The newer games are far worse than PD is for being similar to it's predecessor.

Also: Farsight isn't overpowered, especially if your thumbstick is crap. :P
2010-03-01, 12:59 PM #33
Wasn't really complaining, just stating how much of a turd GE really was. Also, Mass Effect doesn't have multiplayer. Jumping is a good way to dodge shots in any MP shooter.

My favorite thing to do with PD was to cover teammates with remote mines, then detonate them when my teammate runs into a group of enemies.

I try not to when I play fps, its also a great way to get pegged. The only time I really use it is to avoid proxy damage from things like rockets and such.

You don't necessarily need jump to create a great multiplayer experience, case in point COD series.

Not to turn this into an N64 nostalgia thread, but I also immensely enjoyed Jet Force Gemini. The multiplayer on that was great fun with 4 people. Seems like Rareware made all the keepers for N64.

Let me guess, you were the kid who received the Shortest Inning and Lemming awards after every multiplayer match?

Perfect Dark really wasn't as great as you pump it up to be when you compare it to modern multiplayer games.

PS, dual mag secs, three round burst. Your face = owned off.

Yes, because the only people in existence that would dislike Goldeneye or PD are people who suck at it ><
