Well, naturally that would be the only logical reason for such an opinion.

I enjoyed Goldeneye far more than Perfect Dark. I haven't played either in, mmmmm, about a decade, though I do remember thinking that the Perfect Dark HUD and game in general felt too "busy" and that the colors were too "vivid" when compared with Goldeneye's simple HUD and pastel colors. I enjoyed PD, but I enjoyed 007 more.

Gameplay wise and story wise, it might not match up, but in terms of multiplayer selection it trumps every game released to date.

Obviously, mods don't count.

In PD you could setup your controls to use 2 controllers, so that you have 2 sticks (joy sticks) and not just one

I used to spend hours just hording bots on Temple

I am also noticing upon playthrough of PD that while they implemented the expansion effects and such, the actual texturing is in my opinion, much worse then goldeneye. Feels more like daikatana 64. Plus the sound quality especially compared to goldeneye is horrid.

Two controllers works in GE????

Proof or GTFO. (I'm not home to set mine up, not that I even know how..)

I still have my original Nintendo 64, four original controllers, and all the games, but the controllers are so old and broken it's no fun to use them.
2010-03-03, 9:23 AM #57
Controllers are cheap. I think I have like 6.

The cheap controllers are those crappy ones with the sides cut down. I like the full lengths arms. Those are expensive.

Also, someone needs to devise a way to get an N64 controller to work with the Xbox 360 for use in Perfect Dark.

If you have the white dust of death coming out of your joysticks and they are loose, you can take them apart and replace the white plastic piece in the bottom.

The way it centers the joystick is kind of retarded. The end of the joystick rubs on a soft piece of plastic that is kind of bowl shaped, the friction between the two parts is what snaps the joystick back to center. It isn't spring loaded or anything.

What I did was I got a hunk of scrap plastic out of the junkyard, and put it on a drill press. Then I took a big drill, the size of the internal diameter of the bowl, and ground the end of it into a bowl shape to cut the plastic how I needed it. Then I used a dremel to gently shape it into to fit in with the rest of the pieces. I think the sensor mabobs just snap into the plastic bowl, so I just marked them with a sharpie and took a micro-phillips and ground the holes by hand because the plastic is soft enough.

Mine still wore out, but I got about the same amount of life out of it as when it was new. It wasn't as tight as a new one, but it was a lot better.

I was working on a way to make the pieces so they didn't wear out but I never finished it. At the time I was still in vo-tech for machining, so I had access to all the tools I needed.

The idea was to make a kit with instructions that could be installed by joe-schmo and I was going to patent it as an improvement on a product and sell them online.

That's exactly the problem. I can move the stick 50% of the way to any given direction with no movement in the game. I have to jam on it hard to get it to move. Then sometimes it just falls to the bottom of the controller and I have to "pop" it back into the middle.

I might try what you suggest. Thanks!

Seriously, I don't even have time to finish the list. Name me a single game that has all of that. It's not all absolutely necessary, but damn, I've yet to see a game with so many options.

It also has the basic game structure balanced. I don't start with 2 stupid guns and can't get anymore (you can carry way more than that if you wear them right), I have a healthbar with a proper shield system (no stupid regenerating health), it's not necessary to have a high rank to have all the good equipment and therefor makes the game fair for those who don't play that often. Things like that. That last one in sepcific, is a real piss-off to me, I don't play that much but I'm still skilled, but I'm stuck with the garbage weapons and items because I don't waste my life playing.

Seriously.

You're ****ing wrong.

PS, a lot of those "features" are pointless polish, crap, or only fit the PD game formula. Remember how we all found out that JK's multiplayer ****ing sucks. Same thing. The game mechanics SUCK compared to modern games.

Balance, level flow? PSSSHAW. We put random weapons in random places. Lets put the ****ing rocket launcher in a heavily traveled area in a square box level of doom-crap. SURE.

These things were all perfectly acceptable at the time, and they fit in with old crap better than new crap nostalgia mind set but they simply don't compare to multiplayer games that are designed for a multiplayer experience.

The multiplayer in Goldeneye was an afterthought. The multiplayer in Perfect Dark is adding features to an afterthought.
2010-03-03, 5:22 PM #66
Really? Are you both serious? Perfect Dark is a classic game and it was feature packed, especially for a ten year old cartridge based console title, but so highly lauding the multi player aspects of a comparatively ancient title against everything that preceded or followed seems naive. Conversely, attacking the opinions of someone who holds a classic game in such high regard seems a little immature, even by my/Massassi standards.

He asked for a game that remotely compared to the multiplayer features of perfect dark, I gave the first one that came to mind and stated why I think PD was fine at the time but is a turd now.

It's kind of like comparing my truck to a modern sports car.

It's too bad I can't really comment on the MP aspect of the game. I like to play through SP first before I delve into MP and I stalled on SP. I used to have a lot of fun, however, with Turok 2 on the N64 playing MP with my daughter. I have particularly fond memories of the "cerebral bore"! Funny, I stalled in SP in that one as well.

I'm going to have to agree with Rob on the bit about PD's mutiplayer not being all that great by today's standards. For its time it did have some pretty sweet features that a lot of games even today don't have. By today's standards the features in PD seem like they should come with every game, yet they really only come with games that have an extremely complete offline mutliplayer mode.

I do remember that the MP was pretty complete in PD. I just never delved into it. I have always been more interested in SP.

I also wanted to add that I was never big into GE. It never impressed me, but I also was not big into FPS on consoles back then. I really enjoyed SotE on N64. You know, that would be a good one to see re-released and updated. I do have many of the big FPS games for N64 like Turok 1 and 2, SotE, and PD as well as many other great N64 games waiting for me to finish, though. Howabout Shadowman, ever hear of that one?

The Turok games were pretty amazing.

I've never heard of Shadowman, though.

And I remember as far as FPS games on the N64 trying to really enjoy the South Park game, which was basically just a modded Turok 2.

More guns rarely makes for a better game. It's one of the [many] things they got wrong with Perfect Dark Zero.

Steven, replacement sticks only cost $5 on ebay for a N64 controller, don't waste time making your own.

Aside from that, official N64 controllers can be obtained for $10-$20 depending on the person selling. Maybe less if you buy a lot.

Finally someone who nails it xD

I wasn't saying that PD was the best MP game ever. You're right that in gameplay aspects it doesn't hold up. I never said anything about good level flow, I said it had a good balance of options. I'm just saying that, aside from Timesplitters which was done by the same core devs, there isn't a game out there that has all of those features packed into it (Hell, like you said, even Timesplitters doesn't have the rank system).

My point is, if any game today had all of those features and customization for a MP experience, they'd trump PD. But alas, none of them do... fluff or not, I had the option to lock players out from changing the settings, I had the option to change the names to stupid silly things, I had the option to choose whether or not I shot paintballs. It's all useless in terms of gameplay, but giving me the option to do all these things is like the dev saying "Here, have fun with it" instead of what IW is saying, "Take this, play it how we made it, or GTFO".
2010-03-04, 7:43 AM #78
Timesplitters 2 had that awesome Chicago Jazz Club map. That was my favorite one. It also had that on-fire character, Crispin. Man, I love that game. I'm going to have to dig it out.
2010-03-04, 8:00 AM #79
I've never heard of anyone actually enabling options like paintballs and such.
If it didn't actually affect gameplay, nobody cared.
You can't judge a book by it's file size
2010-03-04, 8:40 AM #80
Everyone I played with cared. They hated paintball :P

We loved screwing around with the character selection, making stupid team names, you name it. We played with every single setting until our eyes bled.

Most of the useless stuff I can live without, but there's still quite a bit of options that PD has that most games still don't have, one of which being 4 player split-screen with bots. We have the split screen, or we have the bots, but I haven't played a single next-gen game where it was both :(
