MS does the same thing? I'm p sure windows mobile is even more open than android, and windows is definitely better to develop for/distribute applications for/use than osx

You misconstrue. I did not mean to say that MS does it; only that 'they' ***** that MS does it.

Google's probably going to open up VP8. This is a great thing for HTML5, as it would mean a great codec for video (much better than Theora, around h264 quality).

The irony though? If that happens and VP8 is adopted, all such HTML5 video will not work on the iPad or iPhone, as they, like all mobile devices, require hardware acceleration for such video. So much for The Internet according to Steve Jobs!

So I downloaded Opera Mini, and yeah, it sucks. It's faster thanks to the compression, no question about that, but it loses to Safari in overall usability. Pinch zooming is pretty bad, compression makes pages look terrible zoomed out, double-tap zooming isn't aware of HTML containers, so it just zooms by X amount, instead of dynamically zooming to fit a div. Oh, and most sites see the Opera Mini user agent and serve up a crappy mobile version of the site that doesn't look nearly as good as the iPhone version. Apple probably doesn't feel threatened at all by it because of these things, so it doesn't surprise me as much that they let it through.

I think that the authors of both of these articles raise interesting points regarding the iPad being aimed at an older demographic than the iPhone & iPod. This is less of a toy than either of those devices.

Google is preparing an iPad rival. I wonder if everyone will still think such a device is worthless now that Google is doing it. If they were to release a similar product w/in the next 2-3 months, I'd consider waiting to see it before purchasing an iPad. They better give me some sort of sign before the launch of the iPad Wifi + 3G or it'll be too late. :(
