And the really smart guys, the guys who will actually get somewhere, drop everything except the practice.

Not sure how taoism got into this? Anyone read Lao-Tse?

Should the day come when nobody is religious, within a few generations nobody would call themselves an atheist or teach their kids about atheism.

Kirby is making revenge stabs at me because I pointed out what we all know : He will never have children.

I'm talking about the difference between traditional tribal daoism and modern daoism. This isn't my opinion. The modern groups wish to separate themselves from superstition and focus more on philosophy than myths and stories.

It is a mistake to believe that 'they', as a group, 'wish' anything. The purpose of the myths and stories have not changed.

What is true is that any of the sects that obsess over rituals or silly superstitions are like worshipers of the Buddha. They worship in place of understanding, because they are incapable or unwilling to understand. Worshiping the tao just doesn't make sense.

That said, I do not think that atheist kids need to read religious books because they hold some exclusive moral ground. There is zero moral novelty in the 3 major religions that weren't available in some philosophy or ethical structure. Religion does not have a monopoly on ethical treatment of others, my children will not be taught that there are secret moral teachings hidden away in ancient texts.

I also agree with that statement in that any of the religious texts are not the only source for a moral education and a broader reading to that end should be encouraged. However religious texts aren't limited by moral teachings alone. As I've said before they provide some insight into our own history as people (even if not 100% accurate).

But we're getting off on a tangent... :)

Actually I was just bringing up daoism to relate to you because I thought you were making a thoughtful point about people's right to bring their kids up the way they'd like to. Instead you're just being a creepy little *******. Good talk.

About the moral thing, I know plenty of people who have no religious background, nor do their parents, and are far more moral than most religious people i know

i think it is just as effective to teach morals without religion

I would argue that it's even more effective. Especially if you decide the religion you were raised on is faulty.
If you're raised using the fear of god as the only reason to behave and then you discover/decide that the god you were taught to believe in doesn't exist...

Reading these words, I became enlightened.

I think this talk is relevant
