I disagree. If people are confused by it, or think "why is this ****e?" they won't care that their phone can handle flash, they'll just care that the website won't load or the game won't work or has a poor framerate. I'd guess 90% of phone users don't even know what Flash is in the first place, so won't be bothered that their new shiny thing "supports Flash" if it doesn't do what they want.

Ok, so that came out far more rambly than intended, but it's late.

People can be confused by a LOT of things, even on the iPhone. Besides, they're already saying "why is this not working" when they view a flash page and they get a big puzzle piece instead!

people who own apple products are like the little kids who got a sega genesis.

they know they got a pile of crap. they know they got screwed. but, dammit, they bought it so it must be the best thing ever.

What if you got a genesis and an SNES as a kid?

then you grew into an adult who owns a mac pro and can still call apple out for being douchy.

But I don't own a Ma... I see what you did there.

Hahahaaa.

I had a MEGA DRIVE, surely that's even better!

(SNES sucked ballz lol)

Actually, that said, my best mate had a SNES, and I had a Mega Drive, so we got the best of both worlds: we spent all our free time together anyway.

Flash needs to go away, but Steve Jobs is the last person to make any of these claims.

Somewhat unrelated but I didn't want to start a new thread: Apple bought a big data center, and itunes online is a new service in the future. That is, they're going to circumvent file sharing by hosting your files.

That way you can buy their access device, like an iphone without all of the gigs of storage, and then use the "cloud" to store your data, like videos and music. Imagine paying for music by the online storage space... monthly?

If I could pay a yearly rate for a big fat storage space that I can fill with music ala-torrents but access from any computer/device, I'm done file sharing. Apple is the only one that could make the deals to provide the same library.

That said, I'm kind of creeped out by apple, and although my iphone is the best device I've ever owned, I wish I had waited for an Android Incredible, instead, simply to avoid contributing to that skynet ****. Above all else, I just wish these phones had an expansion slot.

It looks like Microsoft has announced that it's going to support H.264 HTML5 video in Internet Explorer 9. It appears that they made the announcement via the IEBlog.

2010-05-03, 9:37 AM #93

And while he says HTML5 is the "future", he also basically says that it's stupid to ignore Flash.

Quote:
Today, video on the web is predominantly Flash-based. While video may be available in other formats, the ease of accessing video using just a browser on a particular website without using Flash is a challenge for typical consumers. Flash does have some issues, particularly around reliability, security, and performance. We work closely with engineers at Adobe, sharing information about the issues we know of in ongoing technical discussions. Despite these issues, Flash remains an important part of delivering a good consumer experience on today’s web.

I love the idea of cloud-computing, but ever since that T-Mobile Sidekick (I think) fiasco, I'm just wary of that .0000001% of times where it could fail and you lose all your data

Why would I ever want to stream what I can have right here? And then never have to worry about lacking internet access? Is storage really THAT much of an issue? I have 60GB of music and that's not exactly much hard drive space.

Besides, Zune Pass does that one better, and I don't think you have a Zune, so...?

I will say this, Pandora has curbed my torrenting dramatically. I only really download music pandora hasn't heard of. I actually counted it out, and I legally own all of the stuff I download now, simply because the general crap I would've normally snagged once and never listened to again can be heard on youtube or lastfm, the rest I'd buy either way because I am in love with the band and want to hold the object in my hand. The only things I don't own a physical copy of now are the things I am just starting to get into, or leaked stuff. I don't think apple has the wrong idea here, even if an internet connection can be shoddy. I'm the one saying it's going to be a monthly service though, so there's a potential they'll completely screw it up for people like me and keep us torrenting.

I'm w/ Kirby on this one. I use Pandora religiously (on my Blu-Ray player, my iMac & my iPad). I rarely ever download music anymore. I have about 120GB of music that I rarely listen to. I don't even download movies anymore. I even cancelled my cable television. I'll only download a movie if it's not on Netflix (streaming) or Hulu & just about everything that I watch is. For me the days of downloading are already almost over.

You watch movies on Netflix streaming? Really? I mean, no, seriously, beyond like 2, I can't think of anything worth streaming there.

Besides, I haven't heard of Apple doing ANYTHING of the sort that Kirby just described, so I don't know what he's going on about.
2010-05-03, 1:55 PM #100
There's a lot of good movies / TV shows on Netflix's streaming service.

I Netflix stream all kinds of stuff. I watched two seasons of Dexter, South Park seasons 1-9, Dead Like Me, Lie To Me, WALL-E, Bullitt, Moon, Pan's Labyrinth, Caddy Shack, Blade Runner, LA Confidential, and about 50 other really good movies.

I love Netflix streaming.

Steven, you are most obviously wrong. All of those shows and movies are crap, worthless, and therefore makes Netflix totally useless. If I don't like it, then it sucks, not just for you, but for EVERYONE

Storage is an issue if I want to watch movies and TV I bought on top of my 100+ gigs of music. I would pay Apple to store all of that so I can access it anywhere. I cannot bring a terabyte drive with me wherever I go. Apple could offer that for little cost, and I'm not going to be accessing it anymore than streaming.

But again, at&t network... I'm both interested in the technology, and afraid of it.

Found this on digg just after hearing TWiT talk about something similar.

And there are a ton of amazing instant watch, and a lot of **** too. Lots of classics that people almost have to watch. They try to get stuff film students always rent.

I can't think of 50 other movies. That's sort of my point. Almost anything on Instant Watch is in lower quality, no surround sound, and probably saw it a few+ years ago. TV Shows are really the only redeeming part, and even that selection isn't amazing.

Also Kirby, that's like a rumor on top of a rumor. There were more rumors that Apple bought Lala just to have online streaming previews of songs for the store. Besides, as noted, Steve Jobs doesn't believe in the subscription model, so unless he makes another about-face, it will be pointless. (Why would you buy content you don't actually get to have?)
2010-05-03, 4:13 PM #106
I suppose that I don't really care about HD or surround sound. I watch a ton of classics (black & white), documentaries & foreign films. Netflix's Watch Instantly feature is excellent for those sorts of things. I don't really care about new movies (I could never understand the concept of needing to see everything as it's released when there's thousands of movies that we've yet to see) but I do watch a few via snail mail (e.g: "Moon") if I think I'd rather see them in Blu-ray. I think that Netflix's Instant Watch selection could be improved (they're working on it but many of the issues are a matter of copyright/legality) but it's quite good & I never have trouble finding something interesting to watch. They could stop releasing new content today & I'd be busy for a lifetime. I know a few people that have the same complaint as you about Netflix but I've also noticed that these are typically people that tend to search for specific movies. A lot of us don't do that.

I'm also a huge Hulu, TED, VBS & YouTube fan.

Why not? Many people thought the same thing when digital media really started taking off ("why would someone want a digital copy of something when they can have a tangible product?"). I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to tangible items & I'm attracted to the idea of that same concept carrying over to my hard drive.

I knew this would come up, and I should have just shot it down initially.

You wouldn't be getting ANY copy, of any form. What this means is you are relying on Apple to FOREVER be in business, particularly that business. You're also relying on the fact that the service won't be down, and we both know that doesn't happen. At least on subscription based, you understand that you're renting, not buying. This is completely different. You're buying a product that you never really get to own.
2010-05-03, 6:13 PM #109
That would be why Apple is doing it, yes.

Well, I understand it has its functionality, and I agree it's a dumb excuse to not support flash on your product, but I also don't mind seeing flash lose ubiquity. I would think movie sites would just make a mobile version of the site on top of their cruddy flash, but I'd hope they just design it once properly in html5.
