I don't really care about this particular issue. I don't like the idea of a mosque at that site, but it's not a big deal.

I am opposed to it, however, because Mikey Bloomberg endorses it. Whatever Mikey Bloomberg is for, I'm against.

I'm somewhat surprised this wasn't brought up a month or two ago.

Building a mosque would be an insult to the heroes who died on 9/11.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever but I admit not really knowing much about the Canadian Thanksgiving.

Letting approx 60 innocent muslims die in the same twisted, burning wreckage as white people was an insult to the heroes who died on 9/11.

The social, economic, political and mental problems that caused the 9/11 attacks can't be solved through ostracizing an entire culture or religion. All objections are nothing more than blatant racism being hidden behind a pathetic appeal to emotion. Screw free speech; anybody who thinks his is an insult needs to be muzzled.

Unless they're building a mosque specifically for extremists who support terrorism, what exactly is the problem?

Those articles you linked to, I only opened the Boston Globe one and it seemed all too one-sided, which some of the reader comments confirm. They say, for instance, that this new mosque would be more of an expansion to an already existing one that's currently at the same spot, which wasn't mentioned in the article.

I'm personally opposed to building ANY religious establishment (be it a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic church, Jehovah's Witness HQ, you name it) because I'd rather see the space go to something useful, but if they're gonna build one it makes no difference to me which of the major religions it represents. (I do support preserving old, architecturally and/or historically important religious buildings for maintaining the cultural heritage.)
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

If they were building only a mosque; and I don't mean a mosque and not a church or temple or whatever; I mean a mosque and no other buildings at all, I'd be pissed off.

How long did it take to build the WTC in the first place? WHY THE **** ISN'T THERE A HUGE ****ING BUILDING THERE YET?

In early March 2010, 1 WTC reached 200 feet above street level and construction began on the first office floor.

Projected height of the building's roof: 417.0 m (1,368 ft)

Unless they're standing outside preaching "death to Americans", I can't really say I find anything objectionable about this.

It's like getting upset about a Christian church going up in Jerusalem. Or Spain. Or Central / South America. Or any other place where atrocities were committed in the name of Christendom.

I don't personally like to see religious structures being built anywhere. I hope that we'll eventually begin to dismantle the ones that aren't artistic or historically significant & making the rest in to museums. However, I don't see any reason that this project shouldn't take place as long as religious people exist.

Actually I'd say it'd be closer to erecting a megachurch in Riyadh...and that's still not accurate but the effect would likely be the same.

Just calling anyone who would voice concern about it a racist certainly won't help ease the minds of right wing voters.

Not that I'm opposed to it, I just think it could be handled with a lot more tact.

I think it should be allowed under one condition, if we can build a huge Mormon
Temple, a Cathedral and a Jewish synagogue in Baghdad.

edit: btw you should see how many Mormon temples that are scattered across the globe.

So Iraq is a valid point of reference for your American values?

Freedom of religion and all that, if another country doesn't practice such things, your country may abandon them too, is this what you're saying?

The Boston Globe article had a good view on it. Forget the fact that it's a mosque, why have ANY sort of religious center there? It was the WORLD Trade Center, and thus should honor every culture.
2010-07-13, 7:35 AM #20
Agreed with CM.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a travesty, but it definitely is a stupid thing to put there. We should be building a structure that represents freedom and unity, to stand against the culture of fear that terrorists try to perpetuate. A mosque does not represent this. Personally, I think they should build a monument there.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

No, they should build a HUGE FRICKIN' ARCADE there. :D
2010-07-13, 8:25 AM #22
I just think it sends a mixed message. I'm relatively sure the people using the mosque are not sponsors of terrorism and actually follow Islam's peaceful tenants, but I'm also relatively sure the extremists will still view this as a great victory.

It would be no different if Christians had piloted the planes into the WTC and they decided to build a church there, or if Hindus had been the pilots and they built a ... a ... Hindu place of worship (whatever that's called).

While their intentions may be innocent, imo it's in poor taste considering the context of events in the immediate area.

I bet it just gives the anti-muslim folks another target for hate crimes of their own.

i would have to agree with chewbubba on this one, it seems kinda in poor taste. i have to ask. why would you build/expand a mosque there? you know, as opposed to, oh i dont know, anywhere else? both supporters and opponents have made this a contentious issue. 9 years is a long time but its not that long. while i have reasons that i would ultimately be ok with it being built, i can understand why others would not. so go screw yourself and your muzzle.

This. I have no problem with Islam and I understand that not every Muslim is extremist, but I think it's understandable to be weary about this.

But whatever, I'm never ever in that part of the city anyway.

I visited ground zero about 2 years ago & I can tell you that they already have a great monument that highlights the attack. It's known as a BIG ****ING HOLE IN THE GROUND. There's nothing that spells out religious extremism like a big ****ing hole in the ground where a skyscraper & thousands of people were disintegrated.
? :)

I think it is ignorant of people not to be sympathetic to those whom are offended by a mosque at ground zero. I'm not saying you have to agree but building a mosque at the site of the single most successful islamic terror attack on the US kind of seems like an "in your face" sort of play. I am also sympathetic towards the opposing view, though.

I didn't really read any of the links because this is about month and a half old news anyway but I did notice the Fox News link, as I suspected, was an AP article. Maybe you would have liked that one.

I simply googled "mosque ground zero" and that's the list that comes up. And I didn't read all of them either. :/

Yeah this is hugely offensive, even to myself and I'm not even an American. Seriously, isn't a Mosque a place of ISLAMIC worship? Weren't the people that flew the planes into the buildings from that religion?

It's like building a frigging pre-school right beside a pedophile prison.
2010-07-13, 10:35 AM #29
I've got no problem really with them doing it, I wouldn't protest the mosque that's for sure. I will admit that it is a very odd place to build a mosque though, and I'm not surprised it leaves a sour taste in peoples mouths.

You're all wrong. Building a mosque there does not tell the terrorists that they won. In fact, they win if we stop it being built. This is saying, you ****ers punched us in the face, but we're the better country and we forgive you. Building this mosque is a very Christian thing to do.

 Ok mr. joncy, what do you suggest that would be the diplomatic way of handling this situation, even though you dont even live in America. I dont have a problem with different faiths building their structures of worship across the world, as long as it doesn't appear as an act of domination and only to practice their right to worship their religion. Like Chewbubba said its poor taste and to me its disrespectful to those who lost their lives due to religious extremists.

If a group of radical christians blew up a few Mosques and few years later, another christian faith establishes a huge christian church right next to their ground zero, the entire muslim world would go f**king beserk. Its disrespectful. If they build this mosque across the the hudson bay, maybe nobody would think anything of it.

I think we should build some buildings, and put things in them, and people. The people in the buildings could do things that people give them money for. Maybe between the buildings could be some trees and like benches or something. BUT I'M NO DIPLOMAT.
