quran burning... facepalm?
2010-09-09, 1:11 PM #1
dont know if anyone has... or rather has not heard about the florida pastor who is planning on burning a koran/quran(sp?) tomorrow. from the idea of book buring to the response it is evoking from our govt and the rest of the world, i feel the whole affair deserves facepalms all around. :carl:

The media should have ignored it. It would have been a small handful of idiots doing something that would have caused passers by to facepalm rather than be something that is now GLOBAL NEWS.
2010-09-09, 1:14 PM #3
It's been a slow news month so all they've been doing is drawing more attention to the Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan, Sarah Palin and this pastor. If you want to do something about it, ignore it.

On a different note. Does anyone know of a good/reliable English translation of the Koran? Obviously there are many around but I have no idea which ones if any are considered better or more faithful to the original Arabic.

The guy is a moron, but he's well with in his rights to do it. That should really be the end of it because if everyone just ignored him because he's a moron, it wouldn't even be an issue.
Pissed Off?

Although I think we can all agree it's satisfying to call out morans. <_<

That's a shame. Burning the Quaran would have lead lots of non-believers to Christ.

Oh wait.

Someone tell this man that the Koran is not an adequate source of fuel. Perhaps he should use charcoal, wood or gasoline.

Huge publicity stunt and the media fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Still, it seems pretty hypocritical that the same people that were so offended by those opposed to the Ground Zero Islamic Victory Center were also so offended by this. I mean, if your view is that it is so "un-American" to oppose one's right to build a mosque at the site of the 9/11 WTC attack then you must consider the same to be true of those critical of this pastor.

Oh, and he's a moron.

This site has three different English translations of the Qur'an. I'm sure each has its advocates and critics.

I don't know about accuracy of translation, but this is the version I bought a few years ago, mostly because it had a cooler cover than the others at Barns and Noble.

Well, had the state controlled media ignored, or at least not overly hyped this thing so much, people in muslim countries would have had to burn other Christians in effigy.

You think people in Muslim countries watch much PBS?

Doubtful but I am sarcastically referring to the Obama controlled media which is, essentially, the entirety of mainstream news media (minus Fox News) in the US. Once they fell for it, of course the Arab media would pick it up.

The media got a huge response from this, just as they knew they would. The media didn't fall for anything, they sold papers and got audiences, money in the bank.

I doubt this inspired too many people who weren't already "consuming" media to consume it.

BTW, Wookie, do you believe that Fox News was controlled by the Bush administration while everything else was not, since now everything else is controlled by the Obama administration while Fox News is not? Would you consider it fair to say that this would follow the logic you applied?

(We're playing this as if your remark wasn't a bait, by the way.)

Because Fox News was partial to Bush and is partial to the Republicans, whereas everything else (to you) is partial to Obama and the Democrats.

Come to think of it, Í suppose you believe Fox News is partial to Bush and the Republicans because, since they're not controlled by whatever Republican administration is in power, they can conclude that the Republicans are better at everything than the Democrats without the bias imposed by being government-controlled which the entire rest of the media suffers from.

Why not? I'm surprised that mosque isn't being charged for 9/11 related crimes, though it's hardly surprising considering the President's level of skin pigmentation.

No, I believe they report Fair and Balanced.

In all seriousness, news coverage is different from commentary. I believe their news coverage is fair. I don't watch every network to compare their news coverage. However, this might lead to a fair point. On Fox in the afternoon/evening I notice they do carry more news programs than MSNBC. MSNBC is balls to the wall left-wing commentary at that point. Here's what I mean:

fnc/msnbc
5 pm beck / matthews (commentary/commentary)
6 pm special report/the ed show (news/commentary)
7 pm fox report/matthews (news/comm)
8 pm oreilly/olbermann (comm/comm)
9 pm hannity/maddow (comm/comm)
10 pm susteren/olbermann (news/comm)

There is plenty of commentary on both but at least some news shows on Fox. Also, my experience (anecdotal) is that FNC commentary programs are more likely to have significant, credible, figures of opposing views appear regularly.

Why? [They] want to build a mosque at the site of the 9/11 attacks in defiance of most of America and we're just supposed to call in an "Islamic Community Center"? That's not what it is.

I think it's telling that you compare it to MSNBC, which you seem to believe (and as far as I know, I agree) represents as far left as it gets in the mainstream/the major networks. It tells me you're aware that Fox News is on the other end, the right wing bias end, of this spectrum. If you believed otherwise, you would have compared Fox News (a fair and balanced network) to something not blatantly left leaning, shrugging MSNBC off entirely as not a valid point of comparison, which it isn't if it's the most obviously biased network and Fox News is obviously not, to any critical viewer.

Hey Wookie, here's a quick tip on how to never be bothered by 'anti-American' sentiments again: stop being pro-American.

I promise you'll be absolutely free from all that **** that has been obviously bothering you. Free free free at last! COMPLETELY free! Free like a BIRD!

You just have to give up your poisonous, hateful, anti-human sense of self-importance and your tendency for ultra-violence. You can start by not calling yourself 'we' again. There is no we.

So which will he choose - peace and freedom from these sick games and truly scumbag people (pro and anti-america) OR keep being at war his whole life and calling his ****ty flag 'freedom'... ?

I wonder ;)
