It's not Steam's fault though, it's Bethesda/Obsidion's code.

But if the problem doesn't exist with any of the other releases, how can it be the fault of the developer/publisher?

It's everyones fault.
Someone didn't beta test throughly enough is what the true culprit is. If they had tested it enough somebody would have seen this.

Because Bethesda/Obsidion wrote the code that is causing the issue. There isn't really any other way to explain this better, ffs.

Just so you know, the game installs WITH STEAM. I bought a physical copy, and installed right into steam. The problem isn't with steam, it's the horrible job they did of testing their own horrible programming.

So if I already started my career then marking that folder as read-only won't do anything?

If you're worried, just make sure you make REGULAR save. Regular saves don't ever get overwritten, only auto and quick saves.

Are you sure of that? I had considered testing it, but didn't want to bother wasting more of my time.

You could always set up something to automatically copy saves out of the autosave/quicksave folder when they're made if you're uber-paranoid. :P
2010-10-21, 9:09 AM #91
And how would I do that? Because yes, I AM that paranoid. This is a game I could potentially spend 40+ hours playing. Losing that much effort and time would definitely finish what interest I have left in the game off.

To keep it as automated as possible, you could create a script that back ups the save file to another folder and run it with scheduled tasks.

kop, does it delete your files just in the middle of playing? Or did you quit the game then the next time you ran it, your saves were deleted?

I always, always, always make regular game saves and especially right before I quit for the day. I'm pretty sure I'll use up most if not all of the 1000 save slots it has during this games lifetime on my machine.

I'm not sure, as I rarely reload saves during gameplay. I didn't notice the loss until I had quit and returned. I supposed if I created extra saves with specific names I could remove them from the default folder after each session...

Still, I shouldn't have to do this....

The saves you made are probably backed up in your local documents folder save area btw. They're just being overridden by the Steam Cloud ones. It even keeps a backup of previous.

HEY GUYS LETS TALK ABOUT FALLOUT INSTEAD BECAUSE IT'S FUN.

I'm about 4 hours in, playing my standard Guns/Lockpicking/Sneak Robin Hood build. (Take from the rich, help the poor), but I'm finding the moral choices much harder this time. The way different factions interplay with each other makes everything more grey. I want to help the people of Goodspring by defending them against the powder gangers, and I absolutely want to destroy Caesar's Legion, but killing off Legion inadvertently helps the Powder Gangers so they can then put pressure back on Goodspring!

The writing, setting, etc is all top notch, everything just feels expanded and more nuanced, I'm absolutely loving it. I feel like I'm actually a part of the world and want to continue quests.

fishstickz: the obvious solution to your legion/powder ganger problem is to KILL THEM ALL.

...

It's what I did.

I did the Goodsprings bit, killed the powder gangers. Then I went to Nipton where there was some Legion involvement. They wanted me to spread the word, so I thought the best way would be to splatter all of their brains over Nipton. It helped when they started walking away in single file line, allowing me to line up one shot and take many of them out.

I'm thinking about going totally evil on new vegas

I did the exact same thing. I now where the wolf hat everywhere. DEATH TO LEGION.

No, the local saves are the ruined ones. So who knows where the real ones went.

We have been talking about it, and I hope you are backing your stuff up or you won't find it so fun playing the same parts over again.

I am/was doing that. I joined the Powder Gangers, eliminated the Goodsprings people, it was fun killing sunny, I imagined her thinking "Why did I help him?! Why did I give him the gun he's killing me with!?!?"

Moved on to the prison after that, doing some side missions, doing some recon on the NCR. Then save fail.

Just arrived this morning. Played about half an hour so far and I'm enjoying it, although I obviously haven't seen much. Still get chills from the "war never changes" line :D

What I did notice when Steam was finishing the installation was the save issue has apparently been patched. Cloud's still disabled but I never used that anyway.

What OS are you running Livid? You may run into the NPC slowdown, as I don't think that's been fixed yet. I don't even think they plan to fix it, since the consumer already found a workaround.

The local ones aren't in your Steam folder, you know this, right?

I'm on Windows 7. I haven't noticed any slowdown just from being near NPCs, but there was a definite loss in framerate when the screen got a little busy (the event in Goodsprings with the powder gangers). I found a file that seems to have improved that immensely on the New Vegas Nexus, but I haven't played far enough to really test it (only just reached Primm before I had to stop). A fair few people have reported it fixing their problems as well, although apparently it causes dual monitors to crash.
2010-10-22, 9:09 AM #104
Yeah the d3d9 is what fixes the NPC glitch. Some DX10/11 problem causes their facial expressions to rape the processor.

LividDK I thought the same thing but I definitely noticed a difference with the d3d9 file too

I just arranged for a female ghoul dressed as a cowboy to become a prostitute at some casino. This game is hilarious.

BEWARE THE BATTLE CATTLE!

(Seriously, I get sad when I go somewhere that's out of range of Black Mountain Radio)

How many different radio stations are there? I think i found like 5 or so my first couple times through. I just started another new character this week, seeing as i probably will not have the money to buy new vegas for awhile...

Played a bit more today. I enjoy it but I can't help but feel like I've done it all already. I'm hoping the scope of the game will sink in a little more over the next few hours of gameplay, because I'm noticing that there's a lot of location markers popping up on my compass so I think I need to go and explore more.

Question about Ranger Station Charlie (minor early game spoiler):
I was asked to go back and check on the rangers by an old guy in Novac (who also taught me the ranger takedown move). They're all dead and I found two audio logs, one of which said they killed everyone but took a woman alive. Is there something I've missed? There's no quest log or clue as to where they went. I don't want to know what the eventual outcome of the plotline is, just if there's something else I should've found.

Also, something interesting I found on the road to Nipton. I saw a giant radscorpion out on the road, so I started approaching very carefully (early game + crappy weapoons = unfavourable outcome with those bastards). Then I notice a worker ant next to it, and I realise the scorpion is dead. Then I see a line of worker ants scurrying back and forth between the corpse and (presumably) their nest. I didn't venture too close but I thought it was cool.
