Cubans upset at video game that aims to kill Fidel Castro

Cuba's state-run media and bloggers are not amused at "Call of Duty: Black Ops," a new videogame in which the player can join a secret operation in the 1960s to assassinate former leader Fidel Castro.

"What the United States government did not manage to do in 50 years, now it attempts to accomplish by virtual means," said comments Wednesday on the website Cubadebate, where Castro regularly publishes opinion pieces.

The site was referring to the numerous plots to kill the Cuban president, which the government said numbers 638.

The latest installment of the hit "Call of Duty" franchise went on sale in North America and Europe on Tuesday, ditching World War II and modern-day environments for a Cold War theme.

The game's first mission is to assassinate Fidel Castro before the 1962 missile crisis, the moment when the Cold War came closest to tipping into a full-blown nuclear conflict.

Later missions take gamers inside the former Soviet Union and southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

Castro, now 84, led Cuba from the 1959 revolution until he stepped down for health reasons in 2006. His brother Raul Castro is currently the president of the communist nation.

On one hand, the game "glorifies the attempts that in an illegal manner the United States government planned against Castro," while on the other it "stimulates sociopathic behavior among American children and adolescents, the main consumers" of those games, Cubadebate said.

US attempts to assassinate Castro were approved during the presidencies of Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Cuban exiles were responsible for most attempts on Castro's life starting in the 1970s.

"What does not fit in the mind of sane people is how the American society allows the proliferation of these games," read a posting by a writer belonging to the pro-government Bloggers and Correspondents of the Revolution (http://bloguerosrevolucion.ning.com).

"Call of Duty: Black Ops" from the Activision unit of France's Vivendi follows "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2", last year's biggest grossing console game with more than 20 million units sold around the world.

Expectations for the Cold War chapter are high: IT marketing firm IDC forecasts that 11.7 million copies will be shifted in the United States by the end of the year alone.

The article says that you get to play in Vietnam too. I wonder how many Vietnamese villages you get to torch to the ground, killing all their inhabitants too!

Why is it that major production video games promote this kind of imperialism so often?

It's a ****ing video game, get over it.

Right, video games can't promote political messages...
2010-11-11, 12:47 PM #4
Castro is a dick, he killed hundreds and possibly thousands of people. This is a video game that lets you kill said dick in an alt. reality.
I see absolutely no problem here.

You don't get to kill castro, it's his double

You'd rather purchase a game where the MC is a communist spy fighting against corruption and commercialism?

They should make a game where you're playing the role an Eastern European terrorist killing dozens of innocent people and police in an airport with a machine gun.
2010-11-11, 1:07 PM #9
Pfft, you only got dozens?
I got hundreds.
2010-11-11, 3:27 PM #10
I for one think it's outrageous that Black Ops does not allow me to kill the actual Fidel Castro.

But you're just an infiltrator spying on the terrorists WHILE killing civilians (or not killing anyone, which would kind of hurt your credibility in the terrorists' eyes, and in either case would seem rather counterproductive for the purpose of counter-terrorism)! That plot device was all kinds of stupid...
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

It seems that death is a part of revolutionary situations.

I hope Castro opponents were also opposed to George Washington and his war on Native Americans

It sure was Krokophile

I don't see how one dead American would start a war.

Paging Jon'c, man who doesn't understand history needs to be schooled. Do you really support Castro or am I reading you terribly wrong?

I support the Cuban revolution, but this isn't a thread about that. And what part of history do I "not understand"? Perhaps you could enlighten me

Are you serious or is this a clever troll? I'm honestly confused, here.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Technically you are correct but I think when you say "Cubans upset" most people would infer that you mean the plurality of Cuban people are upset not just the state controlled media and bloggers.

Cool. My Little Pony agrees with me. Wonderful. By the way, what on Earth did you do to get such a homoerotic avatar?

That doesn't really seem homoerotic to me. What do you have against unicorns, anyways?

Unicorns and rainbows are awesome.

I don't know, somebody saw fit to mock him with a happy rainbow unicorn and I also haven't found any reference for his signature, which is a supposed quote that is vastly out of character for our president. It's almost like the staff is really mocking him as he prepares to leave and I don't like it.

I copied and pasted the title of the article, so not my words but the AFP, and they are certainly not pro-Cuba. (Although it could be argued that the majority of Cubans do support the revolution, this of course does not include those living in Florida)

Sorry, didn't read the article but what revolution? It'd be pretty cool if they were starting to revolt but I haven't heard anything about that. I know there is a serious trend towards capitalism but I haven't heard anything that suggests "revolutionary" scale.

He means that one.
The one with Castro starring in it.
2010-11-11, 10:26 PM #32
Didn't Ronald Reagan say that first? I'm not looking to argue about it, but I seem to remember seeing it in Call of Duty 4.

Has it from some guy named Ned Dolan.
2010-11-11, 10:31 PM #34
I just looked it up. I had it confused with a different quote from Reagan about Marines.
2010-11-11, 10:32 PM #35
Other sources are also turning up Ned Dolan. So I think, dear Antony, you might be wrong!
2010-11-11, 10:33 PM #36
Yeah, I've never seen any reference to Obama saying that. He probably got it in some chain email.

See, I read this and assumed it was a game that was intended to give him a heart attack with how action packed it was. Mildly disappointed.

Furthermore, incredibly amused by the fact that people are complaining about a game depicting something that actually happened during a war. You know what people should complain about? Games that depict Americans murdering the leaders of countries in ways that didn't actually happen. Like Wolfenstein.

-On second thought, maybe Cuba could complain about other, not stupid things.

Do you, or anyone here for that matter, think that if a country like Cuba or China made a video game where one of the missions was an attempt to assassinate the US President (this game having sold millions of copies) that the White House press secretary wouldn't come out and talk about how the game is "deplorable"?
