"Baba Yetu" (Civilization 4) song first ever video game song to be nom & win a Grammy

All I can say to this is Hell Yes.

Easily more deserving of an award than 99% of the songs at the Grammys.

For those of us too lazy to youtube it, can you provide a youtube link please to the song?

Also, we should make this thread also into a "what other game songs should win grammys" thread.

I find this piece of music saccharine and lacking in originality.

Doesn't say much for the condition of the music industry when video games start winning awards, not taking anything away from video game compilations of course, some games have spectacular musical scores.

As for the song that won, good for it, but I don't understand what's so great about it... Just my opinion.

my Junior year of HS we played a compilation piece of Video Games Live, it had

Halo Suite
Civilization Theme
Baba Yetu
Kingdom Hearts

excellent piece, sounds good as a concert band arrangement too, look it up

Yeah...I found that completely unspectacular. I can think of many many other songs I've heard in games that I liked much more, that were more original, etc.

Lately I find a lot of my music collection being overtaken by game soundtracks. They just capture an essence I feel most mainstream songs do not. (unless we're talking fusion, which a LOT of VGM is based off of.)

Mass Effect 2 theme.

The rest of the album, Calling All Dawns, has much better songs on it.

This.

also, the majority of CM's arguments can be boiled down to "You don't like exactly the same thing as me? **** YOU!"
nope.

Personally I get put off by songs consisting only of ...I don't know what to call it, African or Southeastern Asian chanting? If I remember, it's Swahili or something?

Eh.

CM is the kind of person that hates all mainstream music because he heard a few popular songs that happen to suck and extrapolated their quality to the rest of mainstream music without bothering to give any of it a serious listen.

Okay. I don't understand what they are saying but I'm a man accepting of DIVERSITY. It's just it has to be akin to MY sense of diversity.

I should create a song like that, with lyrics sung by some African dialect. But instead of it being about god, or culture or whatever is moving around on the horizon, it would be actually about mundane things.

"I heard something moving
Around in the laundry drier
Maybe I left some coins in there
Next time I'll remember to check
For coins in my pants

[Exciting sounds of drums]
[Choir of women joyfully celebrating]

I forgot there were bagels in the toaster
Maybe I should remember next time
Looks like there are certain parts of it
Black and burned here
Perhaps cream cheese will mask the taste!

[Exciting sounds of drums]
[Choir of women joyfully celebrating again]
[Vocal imagery of fire]

Cream cheese will mask the taste!

[Chant of a single but determined older woman]
[Choir passionately quiets as the sunset goes down]

Cream cheese will mask the taste!

[Sunset goes down]"

Emon is the kind of person who makes sweeping generalizations when someone puts forth an opinion.

(Generalizations, mind you, that are so wrong that if Emon even paid attention to some of my posts in the past, he himself wouldn't have made)

Not based on your posts but on conversations with you. I know the pattern of thinking because I used to be the same way. Any time it's come up your arguments are tired and ring of the usual anti-mainstream hipster nonsense.

"Anytime it's come up"? Like... never?

Seriously, what you're stating is about as far from the truth as could possibly be. Even a simple glance at any of the playlists I've used... ever... would tell you otherwise. I think you're confusing me with someone else, or something. Because... yeah.

Explain why this song is better than 99% of the songs at the Grammys.

Because I like it more than 99% of the songs at (this year's) Grammys.

Yes, and why? Opinions need to be supported, even for subjective content
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2011-02-14, 9:17 AM #28
Because it doesn't grate my nerves or sound like a bunch of noise or have stupid lyrics or because none of it simply matches my tastes this year? I don't have to support my opinion any more than that.
2011-02-14, 9:18 AM #29

It's The Lord's Prayer in Swahili. I'd say the lyrics are worse than any song at the Grammys.

I'm sure you would say. Your point?

You actually do. I mean, we don't have to keep talking about it but for your opinion to actually be valid, yeah, you do. What you're saying is basically "I don't like it so NYEH"

Even though all art is ultimately subjective, you can still analyze the composition of any piece and find problems with it.

2011-02-14, 9:24 AM #33
Oh? And why, pray-tell, is that? You can't validate such an opinion, especially on something so subjective as music. No matter what answer I provide you could simply shoot back with "no that's not good enough, come up with a better answer".
2011-02-14, 9:29 AM #34
Yes you can. I find the instrumentation of the song rather boring and I dont see anything particularly special about it. Perhaps in the context of video game songs its spectacular, but on it's own I just don't see the appeal.

So what you're trying to say is the instrumentation of the song is not of your tastes? Sorry, according to Emon, that's not good enough. Try again.

Sure you can. For instance, until today I thought Imogen Heap was awful because all I heard were garbage live recordings like this one. Two major problems with it: lack of melody (clapping is not enough, sorry) and a grating voice overlay ("just for now") that literally hurt my ears to listen to. I found the studio recording and was floored at how awesome it is. There's a beautiful background track that adds a lot to the song, no obnoxious clapping and the overlay is quiet and pleasant.

What constitutes good melody is probably fairly subjective, but some songs straight up don't have it. A lot of bad rap is like this. It's all about "sick beats" or something but very little change in pitch, which is what defines melody and makes music actually sound good.

You're a writer, aren't you? Surely you can look at a piece and find problems with how its elements are put together. Same thing in any form of art.

I like this song, it's one of the reasons why I got into Civilization IV (and for a brief moment, Civ games in general) in the first place and released my my first mod for anything ever. Still the most successful mod I've ever released as well!

Sure there are tons and tons of more great video game songs but I still think it's great that this track got the recognition it deserves. Even if it came 5 years too late (I haven't watched any videos if anyone explained it but WHY NOW!?!?)!
