Portal 2 countdown

So, Portal 2 is coming out this month. 21st, I think. Personally can't wait and I'm curious as to how fun the co-op is. So, who all is buying this?

19th. And no, I'm not buying it.

$50 for a puzzle game? Seriously? I'll buy it when it comes down in price.

Portal was an amazing game and worth every penny, but a lot of the reason I enjoyed it so much is because the developers knew when to end it. Some of the problem is that it's difficult to make a transport puzzle difficult without just making it tedious and algorithmic (e.g. Sokoban,) and some of the problem is that I get bored of gimmicks really fast (Mario Galaxy is another game I love, but I will never buy the sequel.)

You've read wrong. Steam says it will be unlocked on the 19th.

Not that it matters to me, since I'm not buying (for several months.)

So it's okay to spend $50 for a "shoot people" game but not a "think" game? Is the amount of murder directly proportional to how much money should be spent?

But really, no, I won't be buying it even though I want to play it. Computer sucks too bad.

I'll get it when it comes down in price. Happened to finally get Supreme Commander 2 and Mass Effect 2 today though.

I'm going to get it so I can play with the game with my 4 year old brother over the summer.

My brother loves all the Portal 2 videos, promotions and gameplay. The "blue paint" and the "orange paint". He likes the sounds of the turrets when they shoot and fall over, the new red lasers, and the pneumatic tube when sucking things up. And he also likes the 2 robot guys, calls them "blue eye" and "orange eye."

Last game I bought for us together was Super Mario Galaxy 2, and we had a blast playing together, despite it being a shameless derivative of the first. It was colorful, the levels are simple enough for him to understand (despite the gravity), and the bad guys are recognizable. I can still see why the criticisms of the game are valid, but, for those brief moments in time about year ago, it didn't matter.

Really, I don't buy many new games anymore, and I guess when I do buy one, it would probably be for both of us.

The original Portal was an amazing game. In fact, I pirated it to begin with, and after beating it I decided to buy it on Steam (when the price fell to $10). Anyway, the problem I find is that typically in puzzle games, you can only get so challenging before the game either becomes too ridiculously hard, or the new features that are added in become the new staple for the game and the original idea is lost.

I'll buy the game as well, just not until Steam hosts one of its typical "EVERYTHING IS PRACTICALLY FREE" sales.

I'm with Jon on this one. No way I'm paying 50 bucks for a Portal game. 30 bucks MAYBE, but part of what made the first Portal so attractive was that it was bargain priced like no other and offered immense value because of it.

I also agree with the high price naysayers. 50 bucks is much too high for me to pay for any game. As with every other purchase I've made on steam in the past few years, I'll wait until it comes down in price to 20 bucks or less.

I find it interesting that people often find $50 expensive for a game when it cost the same amount 15-25 years ago for the customer, not taking inflation into account.

I have no reason to believe Portal 2 won't be worth a $50 dollar game. Hell, I think Portal 1 would have been worth $50. With that said, I probably won't be ABLE to afford Portal 2 when it comes out, but we'll see.

Most of my favorite games are either freeware or cost very little (Dwarf Fortress, NetHack, Minecraft, and America's Army to name a few). In fact, it seems as though the more expensive it is, the more quickly I tire of it (Oblivvvionnnn). This is one of the reasons I haven't bought a 'real' title in a long, long time (other than Pokemon B/W :D ). I believe the most notable exceptions to this rule were Jedi Knight, Deus Ex, Freelancer, and COD (the original, for the multiplayer).

I have high hopes for Portal 2, but I doubt my MBP 13" will run it and I sold my 360. So I won't be buying it!

I would love to be able to pay only $50 dollars for many games. Unfortunately, in Australia, up until very recently (when publishers realized that more and more people were realizing it was cheaper to buy a game from overseas even after shipping costs) lots of new games have been at around the $100 mark, which considdering that even before the GFC the Aussie dollar was floating around 0.75 US dollars.

Got the PS3 version preordered (not cause I want the PS3 version, but because it's currently $55 on Amazon, plus a $20 Amazon credit, plus the Steam version is free with it).

In the day and age of piracy, you'd think they'd lower prices to entice people to buy the game rather then download it. For $50 I'll tell you how I am going to play portal 2....

Not at all, you mean? Pirating software because of price is probably the most baseless, indefensible, morally bankrupt excuse a person could come up with. I mean, this is Steam, and Valve. The tech combined with the company have done a significant amount of work at putting dents into piracy via strong business practices.

Besides, you and I both know it'll go on sale in the future, eventually for dirt cheap. So not only are you pirating because you're cheap, you're pirating it because you impatient AND cheap.

*woosh* that's gebohq's point flying right over your head.

He was pointing out that, for people even our age, $50 was acceptable back then, and considering inflation, $50 is less than it was 15 years ago.

CM you have always championed antipiracy, so even if I gave you the best, most logical reason in the world to support it, you would dismiss it instantly in another paragraph.

I like and support steam and I believe they do a great job of encouraging people to purchase video games. However, they are not the end all be all of video game entertainment delivery. They are a mere portion. I am speaking in terms of the market as a whole.

And **** yeah I am cheap. Not all of us have cushy computer related jobs that pay 30k+ a year.

Nah, I'm not gonna buy it. I hate puzzle games other than Minesweeper. I'm such a lazy [illegitimate son] I refuse to do anything that challenges my mind in my leisure time. Well, except for reading Grant Morrison comics.

I got Portal for free and it's one of the best gameplay experiences I've had in 1st person. I figured it was worth pre-ordering the sequel to reward them for giving me the first amazing game for free, and encouraging them to keep innovating.

Anyone need a partner for co-op? I did the first game with relative ease and even started doing speed runs after I beat all of the time trials.

I have it pre-ordered. I doubt it can be quite the classic the last one was, but Valve has never made a bad game. When you consider the sheer volume of truly horrific titles that have been coming out recently, I'll plop down money for a little quality.

That's because you don't have any good logical reasons.

Portal 2 preload is open now. They've also added a Portal mode and song to Audiosurf.

[Edit] Hehe, I tried to play "puttin on the Ritz" and GlaDOS has put me on a song of her choice.

Cost of living differences mean that in some parts of the country, people make much less than some of you. And yet, the price of some things, like most electronics and video games, is set at a specific level.

I have a friend here who is a lower level safety supervisor at a distribution center. He makes about as much as, apparently, a janitor.

Now I'm speculating here because I really haven't done any research on this game, but I'm guessing it's going to be a bit more than just a puzzle game like P1 was. I'm guessing P2 is going to be a more so full fledged game rather than just a couple hours of gameplay. But I could be wrong, I hope not, but we'll see in about a week.

I think I heard that the SP story will be 3x as long as P1 and the co-op section on its own is supposed to be at least longer than P1. They aren't just going to leave all of that time without a more complex story.

The single player game has been stated multiple times to be over 3 times as long as Portal. The co-op was stated to be twice as long. And as far as story, apparently it will cover a significant amount of backstory behind aperture science and glados, as well as a bit on Chell.

That puts release tomorrow instead of on Tuesday.
