Portal 2 countdown
2011-04-14, 8:31 PM #41
It better be right, or there will be hell to pay. There's a lot of speculation around whether it's actually a Portal 2 release date, or whether Valve will be announcing something else (perhaps HL2:ep3 with Portal 2 tie in).

Frankly, I'm really worried that they'll only release it early to people who bought the potato pack, which would be stupid as hell.

Valve did say there was something they were going to do to tie the story together. It might be the Lab Rat comic or the ARG, but this is pretty intriguing with the timer. I wouldn't be surprised if its early release since the started having preloading already.

You have done well, humans. Very well. Acceptably well, even.

Not as well as robots would have performed in your places, I should point out. But above my expectations regardless. Irish and cynic especially have executed feats of logical divination well beyond what I thought any human capable of. I'm half-convinced they're A.I. themselves. (If anyone happens to be near them right now, don't let on you're reading this. Now: try to remove their face plates and report back to me.)

The time is near, humans. But it is not here yet. Tomorrow you will be given the final test. Then it will be entirely in your hands when I am freed.

But what about retailers. ;_;

Welcome to the future...

Turns out it's more like the equivalent of $40 here. That makes me more inclined to buy it.
nope.
2011-04-15, 5:04 AM #47
If someone says "it will run on your aging 13" macbook pro without a hitch" I would buy it INSTANTLY.

If there's a demo I can play to test it once it lands, I'd be happy.

I just wanna say I essentially called it. At least they aren't making people buy the whole pack. And it's annoying, those statistics don't seem to be updated very often. And it doesn't explain how it works, like if the games have to be kept open, do they have to be played in a certain area, etc etc.
2011-04-15, 9:11 AM #51
Well that was a letdown.

Uh. Yeah, I would have, if I had any intention to play it on my laptop. I don't.

Hey Martyn, if you want, wait until Portal 2 is released. I have a similar Macbook 13", and I will test it on mine and tell you for sure.
2011-04-15, 1:14 PM #60
I'm just trying to find someone who wants to buy it for 40 bucks. Bought a 2 pack and the person who was gonna buy it from me backed out. :saddowns:
Life is beautiful.
2011-04-15, 1:16 PM #61
I bet Martyn would take you on in that, if you wanted to wait for me to test the game for him :P
2011-04-15, 1:19 PM #62
Better idea

Martyn, give me $40 dollars and I will test it out for you. Then you can buy the game knowing if it works or doesn't work.

Based on the rate it's going right now, people may be able to shave a few hours off the release tops, which is completely worthless to those of us who have jobs.
2011-04-16, 8:01 AM #67
What Darth said. The timer only reduces if a whole game actually completes. The first game that completed only changed the release date by 50 frickin' minutes. Talk about a total goddamn waste of time.
2011-04-16, 8:40 AM #68
The only way it'll take a significant chunk out is if the amount of time taken off is proportional to the popularity of the game (since The Wonderful End of the World had a very low number of "CPUs" required compared to say Audiosurf) and people actually manage to fill up the bars of the popular games.
2011-04-16, 8:44 AM #69
I don't think this whole event is well thought out.

The game is coming out in three days. Three days. So what's the point.

From a marketing standpoint it was probably good, for the potato pack.
2011-04-16, 9:50 AM #71
True, but I think it would have been more effective if this was started in the beginning of the week.

Based on the current estimates I've seen considering the growth rate has been steadily increasing due to a steady increase in potatoes, it'll finish at some point early Monday morning. So a day early is better than nothing at least.
2011-04-16, 10:16 PM #74
I highly doubt those predictions. First off, based on the time gained from the current completions, I'd be surprised if we saw even 12 hours earlier of a release, which IIRC still puts it in Tuesday. I'll figuratively eat my hat if it comes out Monday.
2011-04-17, 8:31 AM #75
Do you think Valve figured the community would activate each game a lot faster? With the time still at 43 hours, all the effort of the past two days has only served to get the game a little earlier on Tuesday.

If they really wanted to let us accomplish an early release, it seems like they should weight all the games more heavily so 1/2 to 2/3 of the games would get the reboot.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun just posted and included a file that the ValveARG was sent with these contents:

—LOG FROM [ REDACTED ], BY J.H. TO C.J.—

1. We designed the entire thing to be very, very durable. It was easy to get the materials since everyone’s been thinking
it’s a simple icebreaker ship. Ha.

2. We have made sure to strip it of anything not necessary, so that we have plenty of space for it. It doesn’t have any
backup supplies in the event the crew runs out of food, though. And there isn’t much food onboard in the first place.

3. In the event you need to send it off all of a sudden, use the OR box with code ‘hb1′.

That’s all, C.J. Not much else I can tell you other than this won’t leave a blight on our record. Mesa is going to be sore
when they see what we’ve done.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Half-Life universe story development in Portal 2. Since the game takes place far in the future, presumably the events of an Episode 3 will have already taken place (assuming Gordon doesn't go AWOL again like between HL1 and 2). It will be great to finally have some more story since Episode 2.
