No. I just beat the game. Good times.

You mean purposefully glitch out or a game bug? There's a couple times she glitches out (spoilers) but it's nowhere near as often as the first game. I don't recall an actual bug though.

To some extent yes. There's other things to pay attention to though :3

The ending is brilliant. And they do such a good job letting you know what the white stuff was that I bet most people solve the final puzzle instinctively. The most amazing thing about portal remains the fact that you do everything with just a portal gun.

I actually wasted a good minute standing there with [redacted] wondering how to do it, because I didn't notice the pipe of white goo in the one corner.

I wasn't talking about that part. I was talking about that one really long portal shot at the end.

Ah. Well with that one I just kind of sat there for a moment and... well... took a shot because it seemed funny. It actually surprised me that it worked. It was hilarious that it actually worked.

I'm getting close to being done, but so far this game is freaking amazing. Can't wait to do some co-op.

Haha, pretty much the same thing happened to me. My friend was sitting next to me, and I thought I was stuck in the floor or something after the explosion and he said "shoot up at it" and I did and we both laughed.

I think alot of the foreshadowing in the game was great.

Like that "different" turret. Also, you get to see the fat Opera turret and the potato exhibit.

I've been avoiding this thread ever since I saw the slip about (snip) not covered by spoiler tags (Matty - can you edit that?). I've *just* finished SP and it was brilliant :)

I took the last shot without a moment's hesitation and I don't even really know why. It was great. Well worth the money, twice over. Now I need to book some evenings with Baconfish for the co-op :)

The turret you pick up off the conveyor belt that, if you carry it around long enough, tells you it's name is Carolyn? And then you realize that leaving it alone there is a fate worse than death so you disintegrate it?

I can't get it to work, D3D errors. I'm going to reinstall windows 7 32 bit and see if that fixes my L4D2 and Puzzle Quest problems too.

Thinking back, the audio about the [redacted] goo has foreshadowing that I only remembered after I'd had a few hours to ponder. Which was excellent. God knows whether I realised it when I took the shot, but if that's why I did it instinctively, wow.
2011-04-25, 12:15 PM #142
I think it was part "HEY LOOK THE MOON" and part "well everything else in here cant have portals on it"

Also, MB, notice how none of us used that word? Yeah, you fail at not spoiling.

Apparently it was a resolution issue with my non-standard TV/monitor, so I just had to force the startup resolution.

Loving it so far, I'm on the old Beta test chambers. The writing isn't hitting me like it did in the first game, only one or two laugh outloud moments so far.

They get better, Kirb. The later test chambers are very fun and intuitive. You'll get frustrated, but its more of "why the frak didn't I think of that the first time?" kind of frustration. Not a bad level design in the game, I think.

Did any of you guys find the song written by The National? I missed it the first time around and was surprised to see one of my favorite bands wrote a song specifically for the game.

I'm just chiming in to say that, after stating in another thread that I hated single-player games, I've given Portal another shot & while it does start off a bit slow, it has become quite fun (especially once you get to the areas with turrets). I think that I'm even going to give Penumbra a shot.
? :)

Just finished, and I have to say that while it was quite excellent, I sort of felt like none of the puzzles were very hard at all. I whizzed through the game, and only got stuck once. A couple made me feel brilliant for completing them, but most of them were pretty obvious. I thought the original Portal was a lot more innovative and varied in its puzzle designs.

I also felt like the writing just wasn't up to the same level. The original was witty and could have only been told through a videogame, where this was less wit and a lot more back and forth between characters, making it less of a solitary personal experience and more of a play. I also thought the script for Glados, while contextually explained, was far too emotional and expository. (I thought the last joke about deleting a certain thing was the funniest part of the game, and a return the the dry wit of the first game.) Where portal told the story subtly and used mystery and reveals to explain the plot while the player games, this one attempted to be loud and explicit, smashing the story over your head with giant theatrics in between the puzzles, separating them.

The ending (which was almost stupid-easy) follows suite, opting for over-the-top instead of thoughtful, like the first game. The ending credits song isn't good, and not just in contrast to the first.

I felt let down, and even though this game was longer, and I played the original a few months ago and I know it's shorter, the original still feels more dense and well structured. I really did enjoy the over-the-top moments, and they were some of the most well crafted, physically exhilarating moments in a game, but they aren't really what I expect or need out of a portal game. I liked this game more than I'm expressing here, but I think I had higher hopes.

Anyone need a partner for the co-op?

Kirby: Perhaps it was because you were too focused on the main characters. There is a lot of history in the game that is revealed very vaguely, much like the original. Sure, the story of GLaDOS and Wheatley is obvious, but that's about it.

It was all those subtle nuances, the hidden areas, the vague comments that really made it better than Portal 1.
2011-04-26, 4:01 PM #157
No, I got what you're talking about, and I understand where you're coming from, I almost addressed that in my post because it's what I thought of when I claimed lack of subtlety. Even though we learn some history through subtle-jabs, none of it arguably propels the player further. The game is moved by the dispute between the two AI, and the side stories were never really important or even meaningful. In the original, those hidden rooms and subtle gestures all lead up to the eventual resistance of testing protocol, and escape of the sterilized testing chambers into the dirty back-stage of the facility. This most recent game never used those subtle points to bring anything to a head, or keep me pushing on to find out what was next. Everything happened regardless of my actions, and only in the beginning and a few minor times at the end of levels did the AI ever directly talk to me as the player, referencing something I'm doing or a decision I've made. Instead, they're mostly preoccupied with the power struggle.

Maybe I need to replay it, but I felt like the things you are mentioning were almost too subtle, and became irrelevant to the overall recycled plot of taking out the AI. It isn't as if the things we learned made anyone act differently or changed the course of the game. They were just somewhat interesting additions to characters. I never felt the personal conflict between me as a player and the environment that I was put through, like I did to an immense degree in the first one.

...but resisting testing protocol wasn't really an option in the first place. Your idea would imply the user has a choice, I propose that dying in the game isn't much of a choice.

Whatever happened to Pneumatic Diversity Vent puzzle element? Is it in co-op? In those preview videos, I guess they were showing just concepts, but it seems like only 2 of the levels shown made it in the final product.
