Everyone claiming Radiohead as just whiney and depressing needs to listen to The Bends. It's one of the best albums I own.

Isn't referring to yourself as a "real fan" as opposed to the "annoying" ones sort of pretentious?

Don't get me wrong, I say the same thing about myself with alot of the bands I like, but I was just making an observation.

I think by "real fan" he meant average fan. The ones that no one notices because they aren't annoying about it.

EVERY radiohead board I've ever posted on has been full of truly pretentious people.

And I've posted on alot of radiohead boards.

I know it does, It's really hard for me talk about pretensions Radiohead fans, without sounding pretensions.

What I mean is, I, and most other fans, like or love Radiohead, but don't shout it from a cliff.

The annoying ones you speak of have to make sure everyone knows they like Radiohead, and if anyone expresses any sort of distaste to them, the annoying Radiohead fan would automaticly think (or worse, say) that this person isn't smart, sophsticated, or enlightened enough to like them.

The point is, most Radiohead fans are not like example #2. Besides, EVERY band\artist has pretensions fans, period.

Actually it didn't make any sense, take off the "and I can prove that" part. It was kinda like saying I could prove that I personally beleive something.

Exactly.

I could argue The Cure has grown more than Radiohead.

But we won't go there. I don't feel like buying the all of Radioheads albums, and you don't feel like buying all of The Cure's albums. :P

Why do they even have polls like this? I mean, no album can really be better than another because it's all a matter of opinion. Perhaps a more appropriate title for the poll would have been "Album Chosen Most By 400,000 Randomly Selected People". For example, if this poll was conducted at Ozzfest, I'm sure none of these albums would've even been on the top 10. Number one would have been something by Slayer or Black Sabbath.

I dunno, Darkside Of The Moon is musically superior to alot of things. ;)

That made me chuckle. Tool music isn't particularly difficult except for the drumming. And Maynard's voice would be difficult to emulate...

I hate obsessive fans that get upset when people insult their band.

Your favorite band sucks.

Heh, it's kinda like that with me and Dream Theater - they're one of my favorite bands, but everyone I know hates them. You would not believe how much **** I get for liking them.

Bands like Radiohead (Aka, Travis, Coldplay, you know the ones) are just boring to me...The songs I have heard don't have variation. Since I'm a guitar player that likes to play fast, I guess you could say I dont like them because they dont have good guitars or solos or riffs(Any instrument really, except the occasional piano part). Excluding that part, back when I used to like Linkin Park and all that stuff (before I played guitar) I probably wouldn't have liked them anyways.

I guess you could call it being biased, but truly I really don't like music without a good guitar part. Wish I did.

Congradulations Radiohead on the album good thing or whatever, though.

Yes, all my friends hate Tool and Dream Theater, except for one, and they're his two favorite bands.

No guitar? Four of the five members play guitar. Many songs have great riffs, and one of my favorite guitar solos is in a Radiohead song. No variation? You could listen to two of their CDs and would have trouble telling it was the same band. No other interments? They’ve gotten whole jazz groups to play trumpets and saxophones for a couple of their songs, tambourines, xylophones, triangles, African drums, even cow bells.

I am not sure if all those comments were aimed at Radiohead, since you did mention other bands.

Now, saying that Radiohead doesn't have variation makes me skeptical as to whether you've even listened to any of their music. I can totally understand not liking their music; it is a matter of opinion. However, claiming that one of the most experimental bands accepted by mainstream culture doesn't have variation is just, well, wrong.
2005-04-21, 7:32 AM #60
Yeah, Radiohead have freakish amounts of variation. They went from the almost garage rock in some parts of Pablo Honey through the Britpop-esque ballads of The Bends to the psychadelic electronica weirdness of Kid A and Amnesiac. Hell some of the b-sides I have you would not classify as rock music, they're jazz. Ok Computer is the bridging album between two really different sides of Radiohead.

If they didnt know I dont think most people would even pick say Stop Whispering and Everything In It's Right Place as the same band.

Travis, well there's no real point defending them. Although they matured quite a bit after Good Feeling, The Man Who and The Invisible Band were essentially the same album, and their latest release 12 Memories follows the same forumla. But if it aint broke dont fix it, some of us like what they do.

Coldplay arent really huge on the variety either, but at least they defined something. Ok they almost certainlty were not the first to make the kinds of music that they do, but they were the first to make the world take notice. These days if a band releases an album of softer music usually with a piano or two, they're 'doing a Coldplay'. Respect.

Btw, if you're interested in Coldplay or Radiohead but want heavier guitairs, check out Muse. Download Hysteria, Time is Running Out, Plug in Baby, or Bliss and tell me what you think.

With Muse it's not a misconception. I like Muse, but their songs are very similar in feel and style.

But don't worry, there are misconceptions about the music I listen to. For some reason people believe that because some Sonata Arctica songs have somewhat challenging guitar parts that the songs lack any kind of depth and emotion. I'm accused (yes, I mean accused because personally I take offense) of not liking music with feeling but only music that is technically brilliant.

Someone pointed me towards Muse a while back, an opera type song I think. I can remember enjoying it but I don't know what happened to it. What are some Radiohead songs for cool solos and good guitar riffs?

some of my favorite Radiohead guitar songs....

My Iron Lung
Airbag
Bones

and my favorite Radiohead guitar-wise...

Paranoid Android

and Muse... Showbiz was cool, Absolution seemed Showbiz 2 just a little more produced.

Paranoid Android's gutair solo at the end is awesome.
2nd Schming's My Iron Lung suggestion.
And I love the riff in I Might Be Wrong.

[Edit] I also love Electioneering, in gutairs, and if you are looking for some of the other instruments they use (COWBELL!!) [Edit]
