Finally, a GOOD song with Serj from SOAD
2005-12-17, 12:57 PM #1
Buckethead's latest, called "We Are One", and has Serj doing vocals. It's pretty insane, it's good to be seeing him sing with maybe more talented band members :P.

I didnt like it compare to SOAD

Still love the singer though^_^

I'll give it a listen, but I'd just like to know what everyone has against SoaD. Honestly...they're not that bad. :\

That song came out a while ago. Parts of that song are pretty cool, but others are like 'What the hell is going on?'. The music video is pretty funny. Serj brings Buckethead a bunch of dead animals, and Buckethead ends up making this crazy hybrid animal thing that attacks him. Overall it's 'meh' compared to anything SoaD has done, but just as a song, it's pretty cool. If you want to hear more stuff that Serj has done check out Serart, it's an album himself and his friend Arto created in something like 8 days. It's really cool stuff.

SoaD rocks. I don't care if they have dumb lyrics, it's their sound that I really dig. One thing I DON'T like is Daron's voice. He should stick to guitar and maybe some backing vocals, but never lead. Sometimes I wonder how B.Y.O.B would sound without his whiny piglet squeel voice.
2005-12-18, 3:19 PM #7
SoaD have a handful of good songs, the rest is pretty boring.

yeah, I argree with Detty. Some of their songs are amazing, while the others are boring and meaning-less. I love the music.... but the lyrics are horrible.

that song was awesome, could have done with less chorus and more randomness though, good stuff.

that was crap.

Daron and Serj are pretty well known for their lyrics and poetry. Serj even has a book out called Cool Gardens.

Doesn't mean that he has GOOD lyrics. Seriously, I'm a fan of SoaD and even I know 99% of their lyrics are crap.

You KNOW that 99% of their lyrics are crap? That's amazing.

Oh wait, you don't know.

Like I said before System of a Down is always being praised for their great lyrics. All of them are filled with meaning about, life, death, war, sex, education, dreaming, love etc... And they don't just stick to a serious formula. The thing that makes them great is they can convey a message but still have fun doing it. Cigaro for example is a song with funny lyrics, but a serious message to it. Violent Pornography also has crazy lyrics, but it's a song about sex and whats wrong with television today. Then they have the serious songs with serious lyrics like Holy Mountian, Soldier Side, A.D.D, Ego Brain etc... but they also have many songs that are crazy nonsense, they have a crazy sense of humor like Vicinity of Obscenity, Pictures, I-E-A-I-E-I-O etc. Lost In Hollywood tells us about the bad side of hollywood, Old School Hollywood is a song Daron wrote after a celebrity baseball game he went to and he saw how everyone there was washed up but they still thought they were amazing. Songs are written with meaning and feeling in mind. Daron said he still has over a hundred songs he's written since Toxicity and Mezmerize/Hypnotize. Many reviews and magazines have had articles about System of a Down often mentioning SoaD's great lyrics. There are SoaD websites that have sections were people can discuss the lyrics meanings etc...So even though you THINK you KNOW 99% of their lyrics of crap, you don't know jack.

I've heard people say that SoaD lyrics have meaning, and I still don't get it. Every one of their "serious" songs that I've heard is about something everyone already knows. Everyone knows that poor people fight wars. Everyone knows that advertising and consumerism is bad. Everyone knows politicians suck. They never offer anything new, but just rant about the same old stuff. I like SoaD sometimes, but not for their lyrics.

In conclusion, the fact that it has a metaphor doesn't mean it's meaningful.

I consider myself a hardcore SOAD, fan, but not becuase of the lyrics man. I'm pretty sure half of their songs mean nothing. No matter how much i pick into some of their songs, I can't find meaning out of most of them, save the ones you listed. Seriously.. I listen to them for their great sound and frinetic style of play. Not because of their lyrics.
2005-12-22, 9:29 PM #22
Their lyrics are not only poorly written, but their lyrical content is god damn boring. Post Joshua Tree U2 boring.

Take a break hippies, it was done before you, and better.

They play instruments that seem to lack tone, something I call "mud music."

Overall, they're pretty damn boring.

Yes, I am demonstrating my weariness of the world.

Actually no. I just don't like boring music.

Also, you needed to say that my posts all have the same tone.

Then again, not everyone can be gifted at retorts.

Yes. Not to mention muddy sounding music with little melody is just awful. Top it off with very poor mastering (no dynamic range, etc) makes it sound just awful.

If you guys want some really meaningful lyrics, this may sound old, but start listening to "punk" music, and no I'm not talking about the meaningless streetpunk stuff (aka. F*** the goverment, f*** the state) and that kind of stuff. I'm talking about stuff with substance. I reccamend Bad Religion, Rancid, Choking Victim, and The Virus.

If I knew what any of that meant I might make a smart response...but I don't. So, all I know is that the music is catchy and memorable, and that's all I care about. If it sounds good, it is good.

Hahahahaha No.

If you want meaningful lyrics, get into the Rhymesayers rap artists' music. It's just poetry set to music, basically. But of course, most people don't realize this and go "OMG EW RAP"

Meaningful lyrics by Choking Victim? Like when they talk about freebasing crack? Or perhaps when they talk about how much cops suck?

The genre does offer some great lyrics, though... just not the bands you mentioned.

Oh yeah, and Public Enemy. PE rocks. System of a Down sucks.

SoaD has more meaningful lyrics than most bands out today. I bet most of you haven't even paid any attention to most of their songs let alone HEARD most of their songs. End of topic.

While I like many of their songs, System of a Down has some that are downright absurd. Of course, I'm probably not as intelligent as most SoaD fans, so it's obvious why I don't understand what they're trying to say by chanting "Banana" and "Terracotta Pie" over and over.
