Are there good lovesongs?
2006-03-06, 6:25 PM #1
I've been thinking about this lately. My favorite band, Modest Mouse, has... yeah, nothing at all close to a love song. Do GOOD love songs exsist? Sure, there are stupid emo-love-songs, or crappy hair-metal-love-songs.... but I'm talking about one that gives you the same kind of feeling the rest of the band's music gives you. A rare sort of love song that's got wit and moving lines and non-cliche ideas?

If you hit yes, you HAVE to back it up with the song, and support that song. I know a lot of songs people consider love songs, or good love songs, and they are neither.

That's not a love song at all. That's religious commentary on modern Christianity as opposed to the original purpose of Christianity in the first place. WRONG.

Don't play that "interpretation" game with me. How do you explain the allusions in the song? Hmmm? Are they romantic love lyrics to JESUS!? LOSER.

They made a statue of us
and put it on a mountain top
now tourists come and stare at us
blow bubbles with their gum
take photographs have fun
have fun

they'll name a city after us
and later say it's all our fault
then they'll give us a talking to
then they'll give us a talking to
cause they've got years of experience

We're living in a den of thieves
rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious
and it's contagious

We wear our scarves just like a noose
but not cause we want eternal sleep
and though our parts are slightly used
new ones are slave labor you can keep

We're living in a den of thieves
rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious
and it's contagious
it's contagious
it's contagious

They made a statue of us
they made a statue of us
the tourists come and stare at us
the sculptor's mama sends regards
They made a statue of us
they made a statue of us
Our noses have begun to rust

We're living in a den of thieves rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious
and it's contagious
it's contagious, it's contagious
it's contagious
it's contagious
it's contagious
it's contagious

I will back any ballad by Sonata Arctica.

I'll go with The Misery though, followed closely by Tallulah and My Selene. Basically it's because Tony Kakko has an absolutely incredibly voice and ability to send chills down your spine.

There are a multitude of apostle/prophet statues that are constantly gawked at by tourists.

Let me go
Let me go
Let me seek the answer that I need to know
Let me find a way
Let me walk away
Through the Undertow
Please let me go

Let me fly
Let me fly
Let me rise against that blood-red velvet sky
Let me chase it all
Break my wings and fall
Probably survive
So let me fly
Let me fly...

Let me run
Let me run
Let me ride the crest of chance into the sun
You were always there
But you may lose me here
Now love me if you dare
And let me run

I'm alive and I am true to my heart now - I am I,
but why must truth always make me die?

Let me break!
Let me bleed!
Let me tear myself apart I need to breathe!
Let me lose my way!
Let me walk astray!
Maybe to proceed...
Just let me bleed!

Let me drain!
Let me die!
Let me break the things I love I need to cry!
Let me burn it all!
Let me take my fall!
Through the cleansing fire!
Now let me die!
Let me die...

Let me out
Let me fade into that pitch-black velvet night

It brings tears to my eyes sometimes. Especially the verse about the old people because it reminds me of my grandparents.

Sounds a little too much like it's from a musical or a Disney cartoon, but yeah still an exquisite song.

Many artists feel that the Beatles - Something is one of the best love songs of all time, if not the best. "Wonderful Tonight" by the Clapman is great too.
2006-03-08, 9:31 PM #38
Right away, "Something", by the Beatles, comes to mind. Also, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", "I Need You", "I've Just Seen a Face", and "It's Only Love", to name a few.

Elvis did some great ones, such as "Love Me Tender", "Blue Christmas", and "Can't Help Falling in Love".

Frank Sinatra - It Had to Be You

"Beyond the Sea", though I'm not sure who the original artist is.

Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls. Come on, you can feel the love in the title.

Now, none of these are recent, but I don't really listen to any new bands, and you didn't specify.

Also, come to think of it, 'Last Kiss Goodbye' by Lordi is pretty nice too. Even though it's about necrophilia.
