Are there good lovesongs?

How much modest mouse have you people heard?
I'm pretty sure you're just being music buffs who believe that the music has to be difficult to play, or played correctly, or sung correctly to be good. That's annoying.

When I lived in the dorms, people had all of their albums shared on iTunes. So I've listened to pretty much all of Modest Mouse's stuff.

Define: music.

I've heard it all. My old roommate was addicted. And I wanted to kick her square in the box for it.

And yes, music does need to be played correctly to be good.

You can argue that they're just trying to be more microtonal, but that would be a lie. They intentionally DE-TUNE their instruments. DE is almost a synonym for "like ****". You can also argue that they're a decent lyrical band. I can't argue against this because I can't get past the awful sound coming from what backs the vocals; the instruments.

Nope, it pretty much just has to sound good.

uh. music has to be played correctly, kirbs. your line of thinking is the reason why the industry is getting bland. lack of people that play correctly, so only the same group of pros record tracks for the artists, and while these guys kick some ***, you can't really re-invent how you play time and time again. even steve vai said so.

A few that are off the top of my head or I have listened to recently:

Scorpions - Still Loving You
Scorpions - Rhythm Of Love
Scorpions - No One Like You
Eric Clapton - Layla
Journey - Faithfully
Journey - Open Arms
Electric Light Orchestra - Can't Get It Out Of My Head***
Carly Simon - You're So Vain
Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl***
The Police - Every Breath You Take***

*** a bit more important than the others.

If you don't like those, you don't know good music. You're either a lost cause, OR, need to be trapped into a room and made listen to real music. And don't go saying "hurr that's just your opinion." Well, who else's opinion would it be? Also, I would argue that you could PROVE how some music is superior to others by demonstrating it's superior musicality in association with various related psychological studies.

Wait, are we really arguing over whether or not some music is good?

SURELY, you must all where this is going.

Some people don't like ballads, some people like Modest Mouse.
Some people don't like Modest Mouse, some people like ballads.
Some people think that incorrectly played or even out of tune music can add variety and therefore make good music, some people disagree.

There are no guidelines on what music is, or what good music is, which is why music is great! So get over it.

CARCASS - CARBONIZED EYESOCKETS!!!!

The pungent aroma of hot, bubbling, molten gristle
Blends with the stench of hot, singeing flesh soldered to liquid muscle.
As the cornea is pierced and fried sizzling retina
Burning and spitting on the now blackened, charred fovea

Holes of crumbling carbon are all that are left
Charred eye-sockets of hot scorched flesh

Fusing symblepharon, your flesh turns into coke
Extravasative gunge now black, pungent smoke.
Charred eye-sockets - horrifically pernicious
Your sight irreparable by your optician

Once flowing blood is now dried, resembling black pudding
Now all that bleeds is a slow trickle of hot, sticky muscle.
The sclera is a lump of carbon burning on smouldering membrane
Your eyeballs are blistering, your optic nerves now aflame.

it a very love song , got me ACION lots of times if u no wot i mean LOL

If someone can make de-tuned instruments sound good (an oxymoron?), then... sure, why not? I can see that, if done right. Hell, banging spoons on your knees can make interesting music. I haven't heard much of Modest Mouse, except for Float On, which I liked.

When you say an instrument is being incorrectly played, how do you mean? Do you mean they don't know what they're doing, or that they're doing it in a way you don't like? I'm pretty sure guitars weren't meant to be played with your mouth, but that didn't stop Hendrix.

Schming, that list is not definitive...Also, you thought that one horribly bland, completely melody lacking Jump, Little Children song was the greatest thing ever. So you lose. ;)

Music is sound organized by rhythm and pitch.

That's all it is. The organization is totally subjective. Even our Western 12 half step system is used only due to a generally common aesthetic and convention.

The Arabic tone system, for example, is also music, but generally sounds out of tune because of how our ears are acclimated. Please note that not all Arab music is made with this system.

Music is TOTALLY subjective.

Music does not require harmony, and does not require that melody follow whatever harmony there may be. Doesn't require any tuning system. True, most people do not enjoy these sounds, but they're still music. All it requires is that you actually organize sound by rhythm and pitch.

Theres a reason there are no listening contests, guys.

Thank you spook. That's exactly what I meant by "you people." Musical 'tools' can be used however you want to, because when it comes right down to it, music is bashing, vibrating, and blowing things. It's sound. If ANYTHING is subjective, it's music.

You know what I love? How music automatically brings out the elitism inherent to massassians.

I hate ballads. Hate. Cannot stand them. They sound like crap. I do like most classic rock, but then again most classic rock junkies hate me because I say Journey SUCKS. And they do.

Modest Mouse is awesome. Their lyrics really aren't as groundbreaking as Kirby seems to think they are--they're mostly from drugged up, poor kids who were trying to express the feelings they had. Most of their lyrics are about drugs and being poor. A bit of religion, but not much. I really don't see how Kirby even relates to any of it. Personally, when I listen to their songs I kind of get an understanding from what I hear, sometimes perhaps too much. They have some awesome stuff, but I'll agree, they're an acquired taste...I loved Lonesome Crowded West as a kid, but never listened to anything else. Cut to 2004, I hear their newest "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" and don't like all the songs--only the first two (full length). Cut to 2006 and I now love the whole album--it's arguably my favorite album by them. I love Modest Mouse, but that doesn't mean everyone will. Some people love Dragonforce, and I think they're arguably the worst metal band I've ever heard.

Seriously guys.

I think the lyrics are awesome because of the simplicity and awesomeness of it all.

And Yoshi: I was once a poor drugged out teen. That might make more sense to you, now.

No, you smoked weed. Have you ever done speed, ecstacy, mushrooms, opiates, benzodiazapines, acid, etc? Those are drugs. Those are what Modest Mouse talks about. Trust me, as someone who comes from a land that is filled to the brim with this ****, it makes sense to me. Not to mention, I don't think you really know what it is to be poor. You may think you do because you went through financial troubles, but have you ever lived in a trailer? Have you ever went weeks on end without any electricity and/or water? Have you ever seen your parents spiral into a drunken stupor into which they sink all their money and time?

There's a difference between your perception of being a "poor, drugged out teen" and what the reality of it is.

I've TRIED a couple of those, but you're right, I don't have much of an experience with them.

And I've experienced the same things you're talking about about being poor. The only difference is my parents' substance they abuse. It's not as bad as alcohol, but it eats all of our money.

I may not have the same hardships and pain as you, but I know enough to understand the concepts of modest mouse.

The only guideline is that is has to be sound.
If ONE guy thinks the sound of a dead cat hitting a chain-linked fence is music, then it is. It may suck to everyone but that guy, but no body can say it isn't music just becasue no one likes it.

I used to just like that with rap. "It's not music!". Soon I began to see that I was being an elitist prick.

But I'm sure you don't really think that music is just crappy 80's rock ballads. Hopefully.
