Saxman whips out his 1337 to English Dictionary.

I think it means he likes to pretend he's special by typing like a 10 year old AoHell dweeb. I find the ridiculous amount and intensity of the flames expressed about someone's PERSONAL OPINION around here exasperating.

Just a question... isn't this Sine's spotlight? Last I thought, it was. It's not Saxman's, and it's not HD's, and it's not anyone else's. This is for Sine to showcase some hard work, and while some of you have taken the time to show your appreciation for Sine's attention to detail, a whole lot of you are arguing with each other about plotlines and niggling little details. Meanwhile, you're almost flat-out ignoring the work. That's not what this forum is here for, and I would have thought that many of you who are busy bickering with each other knew better than this.
Forget plotlines. Forget canon and EU. It doesn't matter. Grow up. Get over it. Stop insulting each other. This place isn't for you to go around flaming. It's for work -- Sine's work -- to be appreciated at face value. If you're going to insert an opinion, consider opining on the quality of Sine's work. Those of you arguing have already given your praise and criticism... there's nothing left to say. Just stop.
Now... Sine... I think those screenshots are amazing. I rather like your attention to detail. It's good to see this kind of dedication to level-making. Some people don't do as much. (I won't mention any names.) It seems a bit more real, and looks like it ought to be a lot of fun, come game-time. I'd certainly download.

I want some new screens [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif].

Yeah, I did go a bit overboard on those little factoids about Coruscant's name and how I believe Nar was rebuilt, etc. Sorry. I totally agree with you about Sine's attention to the level, Gibraltar. I wish the same amount of dedication was evident in some level designers who are suppoedly professional... Nar Shaddaa in Jedi Outcast was not very true to the previous games(better interpretations that LEC has done) or Dark Empire. Sine has gone beyond the call of duty researching about this scummy place and it is evident. Cheers to Sine!

I'm talking about my PERSONAL OPINION that while a VERY IMPRESSIVE and GREAT-LOOKING piece of work, to me it just doesn't strike me as planet-wide overdevelopment and severe urban decay I've always read Nar Shaddaa described as. It's an OPINION that I still stand by and I was unduly flamed for it despite the fact I said it still LOOKED GOOD. THAT'S what my beef is.

I understand your opinion, but keep in mind there are still many constraints imposed by the engine that wouldn't allow this. I would think someone like you would have already known this.

Saxman - I see what you are saying, and this level DOES show that, however I noticed that these particular shots dont show it as much as the other ones. Scan back and look at some of the other threads showcasing this same level.

Emon - That is true, however there are always ways around things like that. Im not that much of a JO editor, but being a JK editor I know all about getting around "engine restraints".

Of course there are ways to get around constraints, but I think Saxman thought it should look much dirtier than really feasible on the engine.

I don't think anyone's told you yet... but here you go;

This is Massassi.net.

Now, onto the level itself... I've been avoiding to post because my oppinion doesn't fit the rest of yours.

Of course, it's an AMAZING level, looking and feeling, there's just something about it that doesn't jump out. Now, if this is a bad or a good thing, I don't know. I personally think you achieved a level of realism that makes me feel like its simply normal and not some astravigant level. And of course, dispite my dislikes for JO, I'll have to find some hardrive space for it so I can lay some stormies in here to rest.

Maybe add a couple speeders jacked up on cinder blocks 'cause their repulsor units have been ripped out, or even some low-poly refuse heaps (similar to what's in the first part of the Baron's Hed level in JK) or a couple overflowing dumpsters could help give it a more lived-in and dysfunctioning city feel.

Also, you could do stuff like if you decide to have street lights have a couple blocks where they either don't work at all or flicker, or are real dim, same with interior and exterior building lighting and street signs. You could also use textures to make boarded-up windows and doorways, and some blaster burns in the sides of buildings, especially in alleyways.

This is more for actually using the level: While the engine probably wouldn't allow many at a time you could always add in groups of tired, poor and huddled masses, too, or toss in some street thugs that are willing to attack anybody. Nothing screams "Crumbling Social Structure" like the Sharks and the Jets squaring off on the West Side. Talk to my friend Mr. Bernstein, he could help you choreograph it.

I do have a question: What levels of the city is this map supposed to be at? The upper levels would be a lot less decayed with things getting nastier the lower you get (Now trying to accurately render the SURFACE of Nar Shaddaa, THAT would be crazy).

Both of these are doable, and would be fairly easy to implement.

A lot of the lights already don't work/flicker, but that's rather difficult to convey with a static image. A few doors are sealed off or boarded up, but I think blaster burn marks would be a little less practical. As for NPCs.. well, I need some before I can do what you're talking about. Without giving too much away, though, one of the objectives does involve avoiding a turf war between rival gangs. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Thanks for the ideas

Dont misunderstand me, im just pointing out how most screenshots that are JPGs make the picture look bad, but the way that Nar is dirty and grubby, the distortion the compression creates kind of adds to the dirtyness, which in this case is intended.

For example, if I am making a texture that is supposed to look dirty I will compress it highly, therefore distorting it, where I will barely compress it at all if it is supposed to look crisp and clean.

... JPEG compression looks horrible. If you compress a jpeg more to make a texture look dirty, you should be shot. Artifacts are left and areas become 'squared' off. A "clean" texture can handle more compression than a "dirty" one because, in theory, it's not as busy.
