Team work

Most impressive. I don't care what those other punks say; this is really beautiful. I've actually attempted to build this ship twice... The first incarnation was the first serious level I ever worked on. It was scrapped for the most obvious of reasons, but I'd say it taught me a lot. I've completed a second one that seems to accurately represent all areas of the ship. (Aside from decks 1 and 4, the bunk decks) I'd really like to finish it, (just to complete the thought, so to speak) but it's unlikely I will due to the fact that the work of your team has put my petty attempt to complete and utter shame. It's cool, I've got other projects in mind. At any rate, I'd really like to talk to you about this sometime; it would benice to hear how you undertook some of the ship's quirkier architecture, like those evil doorways, the bizzare angles in the forward portion of deck 3, the transitions between the rectangular and cylindrical hallways, etc.

Anyway, since I guess I'm obligated to give some actual C&C, here goes: Overall, I really like the look of the level. I'd try to be critical about the added power of all the effects and what it might do to the framerate, but I'm sure you've already considered this. I've seen some commentary about the shape of the hallways- sure, there's some discrepancies, but I think it'll work. Cieling height looks good, but it's going to need to be that way to avoid camera bouncing. The width of the hallways doesn't exactly look true to the films, but I would argue against changing it, because that added floorspace is going to come in handy when there are multiple players on the map. Other than that, everything looks good, considering you're still in the process of completing the map. I really enjoy the shiny floors, and the lighting looks quite nice. The way the actual ship is designed leaves little room for nice effects in the main hallways, but I'm sure the other areas of the ship would be easily exploitable. At any rate, I'll be looking forward to what you come up with. Keep up the good work.

In my opinion the map looks good so far. Still you need to work on the doors and detail the walls with more than just textures. Also the floor shouldn't be that clean, in the reference pictures (might want to look at them) the floor isn't that clean (might wanna make a new texture for the floor).
Also to comment on what LDJ said on his last comment on page two, I'd say it's always good to go make a map with gameplay in mind first. Just don't forget that a map isn't very fun to play if it looks like crap, I've seen people make fun maps with a "mad" amount of detail so it is possible (DOTF2, Sunset on Coruscant, Matrix Subway duel, etc).
Also I ask that you please make some of the movie battle maps FFA also, not everyone plays on the internet.

Honestly I think most of your maps, LDJ, are great. Lately my opinion is swaying because of your levelsource map, which really shocked me. Your maps usually play and look great, but that map looked like a mappers first try. Don't let that happen again, I believe you're better than that.

If you've ever seen a stormtrooper, that's what sort of shine the floor should be, not a mirror, or even reflective but a SHINE.

The floor was NOT that reflective. Like kirby said it SHINED not REFLECTED.

2004-04-19, 2:05 PM #112
Since he can't make it only partially reflective, only shiny, he should go with shiny, because mirrors in Q3 are notoriously slow.

I think you might want to consider the 'shiny floors' since so many people are getting their wangs worked up over the reflectiveness.

However, o critics of reflection, consider how much is actually visible at one time - then times it by 2 - is that REALLY so bad? It's inside a ship!

To make it appear less reflective, increase the opacity of that texture in the shader stage just above the portal. It should make the reflection less distracting. It won't blur the floor, like in the movies, or real life, but it'll make it less distracting and truer (in some sense) to the original.

I wouldn't worry about the lighting criticisms either, it's a pain to get white textures to light properly, and you're very close as it is.

Also, I appreciate the wider halls and whatnot - the ship isn't supposed to feel unnecessarily claustriphobic, although really, you're in a tin can hurling through space .. who wouldn't feel closed in?

As for the reflectivity, you'd say that it's not much, my personal experience has lead to other conclusions. The lighting criticism I gave was because there are obvious seams in the lightmap - if you'd have that shot in r_lightmap 1, you'd see.

I can tell it's getting huge. This is belive it, or not. My first showcase thread that got too 3 pages long. I wish I could work on my map at school. At this time of day I'm at school during study hall on the computer. anyway. the sector of the ship I'm about to hit is going to be as tricky as hell. There is an angle Func_door that I have to recreate. I don't know how Jedi did it. Other than that the angled pipes will pose a challenge. The curves are easy but getting them at a 45% degree angle. will be pretty tricky.
