Here's a level I've just started working on. About 80 minutes of solid work here. Tell me what you think.

ATM it looks pretty darn boxy and feels like a random layout, but I'm not saying thats necessarily bad. Once its textured and the "ceiling" has some detail (or is turned into a sky) things should start looking up.

Obviously its a good start though.

A few small updates. I would have more work done by now, but I had a completely freak JED error, and had to go back to one of my backups, losing about an hour's work. I'm at about 300 sectors and 4000 surfaces. I am working in some detail, but it's most layout at the moment. So for all the boxy comments - come on guys, you know I'm better than that. ;)

From what I can see, I don't like the gameplay layout. Seems like a lot of archi without a lot of flow. I could be wrong though, so I'll wait until I see, or even play, more.

By the way, if you don't get AIM one of these days, I swear I'll kill you. You don't come into mIRC ever, either. I hate you. :gbk:

Looks like an interesting start for a level. It almost reminds me of one of the multiplayer maps in the original Halo. I don't remember what the map is called though. You seem to like arches a lot. There's nothing wrong with that though. This should be a pretty cool map once you get in some textures and lighting. I'm glad to see some new JK level projects. It seems they are becoming fewer and fewer nowadays.

One last update before I go to bed. It's starting to come together, I already have the whole thing planned out. I just need to add more detail and finish the last bits of layout. Saying that, I'm at 600 sectors and 6,000 surfaces already!

Reminds me of Roman or Greek buildings.
I'm guessing it's going to be a deathmatch level?

Glad to see you back where you belong, bro. Looks good so far... what are you shooting for? DM? CTF? What textures do you plan on using?

I'm kind of going for a more elaborate Basilica. It's a small DM, with a LOT of connected passageways. I'm pretty sure the flow will be quite good, but I'm also going for a lot of detailed architecture. As for textures, I have a few in mind, but if you have any that would be great. Think small Italian village! ;)

I miss the point symmetry...NOT. Looks good so far.

And WTF Kirby, you can judge the gameplay of a level by looking at screenshots of basic architecture? I mean, there isn't even any item placement done yet...

Kirbs seems to have decided to play critic these past weeks. Just about every second post of his is making negative comment movies on maps, movies, or something similar. :p

Some more shots. I know it doesn't look like much has changed, but trust me, it has. This is taking a lot of work, but since I'm hoping to make it my coup de' grace of editing (at least for the forseeable future) , I want it to be good. It occurred to me that it would probably make a good CTF map, as is or expanded, so if someone wants to make it a CTF map or help me with it in the future, I can do that.

The sky is temporary. I'm planning on making a night and day version of the map, and release the two together. The night one will hopefully have different features, such as burning torches, while the day one might have windows open, or flapping in the breeze. I'm trying to make the architecture reasonably realistic, but I'm a bit worried about too much detail. It's a pain to cleave through this level, since it has so much detail in so small space. It's currently about 800 sectors and 8,000 surfaces. I'm worried about framerate a bit, although it seems to be ok unless your flying up high due to the level's design. But isn't there a surface limit? I don't want to hit that, since I'm nowhere near done with the level.

Hey, Kirbs, the bold text only takes away from the point you were trying to make. We all know that you can only judge what you can see. And we all know, that there is a high probability that you are wrong, because you haven't seen more or played it yet. You seem to have been aware to these facts at the moment you posted, so why did you still decide to shoot into the blue. It's basically like "I know, this is probably complete rubbish, but listen anyway".
Don't get me wrong, I'm just interested in the movements of your psyche at that moment, because I caught me before, doing the exact same thing. And I don't know why.

But back on topic:
If you are worried about a surface limit, why don't you test it? Shouldn't be too hard to find out.

No, I decided not to at the moment, since I don't think I ave enough to put on there. Once I start texturing, than I will.

Btw guys, sorry if the screenshots are boring at the moment, it may still be a while until I get to textures. Framerate is good for the most part, usually staying at about 20-30+. THe only time it gets really bad is when I fly, and look at the entire map, in which case it drops to 3! >_<

The roof at the top of the arches is way to thin. It looks terribly.

I was actually thinking the same thing about where the arches meet the roof... it looks as tho there's no keystone for the arches, and the roof itself doesn't look attached to anything.

EXAMPLE

Without a keystone, those arches would collapse. Notice how there's a nice solid base ledge over the keystone. Also note how the roof protrudes over the ledge on the sides.

The 'keystone' needen't be larger than the rest of the arch like in those examples. In fact, it even works with a verticle seam there. It's purely aethetic; the point is that if you chop off the top of the arch like you have, it's no longer structurally sound and it looks TERRIBLY. It should atleast be the same thickness all the way around.
Wikissassi sucks.
2006-07-02, 10:57 AM #31
Which if these are you referring to?

If the first, I really don't know what to do about that. I wasn't planning on changing it. If the 2nd, well, that's not finished yet, I'm going to add some structural support beams.

We're refering to that 1st picture. You see, right where you drew that red arch, the top of it is cut clean off. In JK, that's fine... but in the real world, most of that entire building would collapse. Seeing things like that just hurts my eyes. Don't get me wrong, you have to know I love what you've done with the place, otherwise..

While the archi is neat, just the thought of all those surfaces you have to click when texturing makes my head explode with oranges.

Aye. Without the lighter plugin, it's about 10,000 surfaces right now, but with the lighter it's over 16,000!

Some progress on the roof. I'm probably going to add a bell tower beside that roof as well for a sniping point! ^_^

Haha, of course, I have about 100 backups so far! ;)

Anyway, more of the same. I'm getting a bit worried that this map will be unplayable as MP though. The framerate's quite bad, and there's just too much damn detail. I'm at 12,000 surfaces right now and about 1,100 sectors. And keep in mind, this is all crammed into one tiny space. :(
