Custom User Titles
2004-09-04, 2:26 PM #1
When I originally enabled user titles for admins only, I thought we would give them out as sort of a bonus to people that have been around a long time and contribute quite a bit. Unfortunately, some admins have been going absolutely crazy and now it looks like EVERYONE has a custom title of their own choosing. If this is how it's going to be, I think we should just enable custom user titles editable by yourself, so an admin doesn't have to bother doing it. However, it's to the point now where I'd rather disable them completely. However, since so many people are using (and apparently enjoying?) them, I thought I'd post a poll. So vote!

Maybe, if you allow people to make their own, make a word limit and don't allow colors. That is my two cents.

I don't care who does them, as long as like echo says, you can have only a few words and no colours. Gotta keep it slick :)

See Echomans post.

As long as I get to keep mine in all its beautiful red glory, I'm happy. Personally though, I think admins should only give them to people who've been around a while or have done something noteworthy.
2004-09-04, 2:39 PM #6
I think only people over a certain number of posts should have them... or people who do something worthy of having one.

With everyone having one it doesnt feel so special :( I don't think they should be extremly rare.. but not everyone should have one.

I am very much in favor of not allowing non-admins to make their own. This would ruin my plans.
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

admins add to just a few.... it keeps things amusing.

Yeh.

I'd like to add that I'm very pleased that Brian has actually taken the time to ask the community what they think instead of just doing whatever. Other admins (or supermods that is) could learn from this, as could other online communities. So, yay for Brian, yay for moving towards Massassi democracy.
2004-09-04, 2:50 PM #11
Bwahahahaha just because I'm asking doesn't mean I'll do what you say! ;)
2004-09-04, 2:52 PM #12
you can clearly tell brian is loving these new forums with the rediculous amount of comical posts he has been making. :p
2004-09-04, 2:52 PM #13
I prefer the original idea of only a few people getting custom titles granted by admins. It makes the system a little more meaningful/interesting.

But letting people choose their own titles would be cool, too. And I, for one, don't think it would be that annoying to allow them to be colored.
2004-09-04, 2:54 PM #14
I think that allowing only admins to edit titles would work the best. It could provide for some humorous titles, as well as an incentive of sorts to be good. (Or at least suck up to your favorite admin :p )
2004-09-04, 2:55 PM #15
I think one particular admin went completely nuts adding titles to everyone on the board (it wasn't me).

Anyone over 1,000 posts should be able to make their own.
2004-09-04, 3:04 PM #18
well, i'd quite like a custom title but don't really think that the whole community should be able to edit their own because they would lose they're 'special' meaning.....

did i mention that brian and all the admins are gods and deserve all the money, drugs, sex, women (or men if they prefer ;) ) that they ever want :p ......

plus I used to be a mod and because my forum was boring it was archived and i'm feeling left out :(

[edit] seems as though sucking up is not required as "I has" it.......lol

I vote no more titles.

I'd say that now we should just let admins put them on some people (and keep half of the ones there already, i like mine)
nope.

Just because you have one Mr. Fancy Pants.

True, they make you "special", but does it really matter? If someone wants, for whatever reason they do, to add a custom title, I don't see why they don't deserve to. Besides, IMO it makes a faux hierarchy of posters. Those with, and those without.

But then again, does it really matter either way? No, but hell, I like talking...
2004-09-04, 3:18 PM #22
I think people with 1000 or more posts should be able to do thier own title, and the admins should give the lower ones out.

Let admins add to JUST A FEW PEOPLE.

This way, and the majority of us can fall into sad nostalgia, wondering and remembering fondly this short period of time, when everybody had crazy titles. But we could still be happy, for we lived through it and witnessed it with our own eyes.

I think the best solution would be to reset everyone's title to whatever's appropriate (IE: Senior member), and re-do the "admins only give a few select people titles" thing. That way, titles can be something you can earn, but not just by spamming so that you reach the post quota to do so.

SAME WITH AVATARS.

Avatars even more so because people that don't want to see them can just turn them off in the user CP. I personally want my "made by Pommy" avatar :(

[PS: make the maximum avatar filesize one byte more than mine, and make max dimensions 75x75]

hell yes

only random admins should be able to add random titles. titles that are suspected by the community to be added non-randomly, or without mildly malicious intent, should result in the offending admin getting banned for a month and the offending user getting banned for a week

allowing users to add their own titles just results in NO-ONE having ANYTHING worth reading.

Custom user titles will just mean Dj Yoshi changing his to "I love ATI" and Pommy changing his to "1337 frnds_pommy"
How exciting.

(not singling those two out particularly, just can't think of anything about the rest... go rob a bank or something the rest of you.)
2004-09-04, 3:32 PM #26
... except I wouldn't change my title to that.

IF it's decided that users should be allowed to create their own, then make it at 1337 posts, not 1000 :p

My vote still stands at only a select few.
2004-09-04, 3:38 PM #28
I voted for "admins naming for everyone" though "make your own" comes close too. It gives extra personality to the members around here. That, and the ISBers have been wanting me to "flex my powers" and try getting them names. I don't know what they think I am.

Oh yeah... :D ^^;

Personally, I like the titles as it is now. I think many people enjoy the titles, and I can't see putting it based on posts so much as when registered. I've been here close to 4 years, and I still don't have over 1000 posts.

I think admins should only allow a couple people to have them. The point of custom titles, in my opinion, should be let certain people stand out. Letting admins go crazy and give everyone whatever they want is a little overboard.

Oh and Brian, could you check your PMs, please?

[Edit: Oh, nevermind, you did read it. Receipts are fun!]
2004-09-04, 3:53 PM #33
i like admins giving them out to people who deserve theirs...

and with avatars yes make sure that if enabled they have some limits for image/file size

Keep it unique. Admins give them out, but only to a few people.

avatars should not be a problem. You only have to download them once and then they're cached, right?

Actually it was several of us... kind of a shared bout of insanity. I was weak. Started just giving it to a few, but then it seemed a bit...elitist to give it to one person and ignore another person who really wanted it. Gave it to about 15 people all up. Anyway, voluntarily joining the deadminned ranks.
