Having every single person have their own title is rather pointless... it's like having a second sig under your name. Also, you need to have somesort of way of telling who's a mod, who's an admin and who's a regular member. I think the best idea is letting people have custom titles beyond a certain ammount of posts. Admins/mods could be color-coded or something else.

Also, I want avatars. People who don't like them can just turn them off - so there's no excuse for not having them. Just as long as there's a filesize and size limit and some general rules (no offensive matterial, etc - the usual stuff.)

Some other suggestions:

-much wider variety of smileys (while keeping the good old classics)

-pictures in user profiles?
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

In fact, the same goes for signature images.

I'm not saying this to whine, and it has limited relevance here since I'm rather new a member here, but as an example I have been registered at Lucasforums since middle 2002, and I haven't yet reached the post count allowing a custom title (1000 over there). This is solely because I haven't posted on the endless "Currently listening to" threads, but concentrated on helping the beginner and more advanced mappers.

Yet, I have no problem with it. For I realised a long time ago forums are no democracy. There are rules, and it's no use to try to fight them just because you feel they aren't right. Whatever happens here, it's OK as long as it suits Brian.

Most people have over 1000 posts here anyway.

Change mine at random times, randomly....

Yeah, i should be 2000 or 3000 posts IMO.

I know, but I don't want to. I like sig images, but when they're HUGE AND ANNOYING, they're...well...HUGE AND ANNOYING. Yes I'm going to keep typing HUGE AND ANNOYING in caps. Why? Because it makes me feel cool.

I like titles, but they way I look at it, it should be either:

Everyone gets one.
No one gets one.

Making the admins create a title for everyone is just too much for the admins, I think.

And only having it for select people creates social ladders that massassi has been trying to avoid for years. (Post counts, etc.)

Yeah, it basically makes the sig picture into a link to the picture.

I do not agree with only being able to have a title if you have a certain amount of posts. I have been here for close to 4 years with this nick, and I still don't have 1000. I say let the admins add them as they see fit. It is rather amusing that way.
2004-09-05, 7:24 AM #98
Titles are great for admins to give out... mostly reflecting on the personality of the poster.

I like that Admins set titles..

It adds a certain amount of hilarity, when someone that mouths off gets a funky title. And of course, inside joke related titles are always a good laugh.
2004-09-05, 11:36 AM #102
I should set all titles. Noone else should be allowed to.

On another note, I've been trolling on Massassi since it opened. Since we had the one-page forum that didn't do anything more advanced than indenting replies to threads. I registered on the new forums the day after they opened (2-28-2000) And I still only have 1284 posts. (Well, it IS more than I though I had. But still.) Basing it on total-posts is not a good idea. It's fine the way it is - I would never have insulted myself so thuroughly. But now that I have it, I want to keep it.
2004-09-05, 11:56 AM #103
Let the admins hand them out to anyone they feel should have one.

I found out today that and admin had given me one, and I thought "Wow, cool"; it wouldn't mean anything to me if I was the one to give myself a title.

My vote on avatars: let ppl have them, with the limitations on filesize/dimensions, and disable sig pics -- the avatar can be their sig pic (and maybe represent what they would want their custom title to say)

In short -- let admins set titles, and members set avatars (their own I mean).
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

To differentiate between admins and regulars, put a dot before the admin's title, for example:

MBeggar
·Please?

[Edit: I tried for ages to find the right green color for the title, but I give up.]

I think signature pictures would clutter the forums, really. even if we can turn them off, its annoying to have to do it.

I also don't think that post counts should be used to determine who gets titles. I've been floating around here for a long time, but I don't post much (I don't spam the forums).

I agree with the first half of that. But there's an option, that makes it so that you don't have to make an admin do it, but after you reach a certain post count (say 1000) you can make your own user title. That sounds more plausible and better to me.

I hate the idea of tying custim titles to post counts, it'll just encourage more incessant spamming either here or on one of the hidden forums. Infact I'm pretty much against using post counts for anything, period.

The idea of admins giving out titles to a select few appealed to me at first, but could cause conflict and be another way in which some forum regulars are put on a pedestal over others. Just my 2 cents.
2004-09-05, 3:23 PM #110
I would have to say that no matter what is done, admins must should be careful how they deserve who is worthy of a title and who is not. Some people have been around Massassi for a while, and for whatever reason aren't very popular/well known. I.... err some people would be very displeased if they're excluded.

Post count of 1337 should allow users to select their own. Other users can get one if they PM a request to an admin.

I agree on the second part. What about you get to choose your title when you've been registered for a certain amount of time?

Here's my suggestion:

The forums for the long-running flash cartoon Weebl and Bob have a system of "rupies."

You get one each time you post. However, if someone else particularly enjoys one of your posts, they can choose to rate it up by clicking a button near the "quote" etc. buttons. They can also, however, rate it down, subtracting one from your score. This encourages people to make good posts instead of just a lot of them. There's also a "rupie store" which allows forum-goers to "purchase" things like custom titles, glowy names, etc. Some of the more expensive items include changing another member's title for a day, etc. It's complicated, but I just thought I'd post it. It is an interesting idea. :)

I have an idea! How about we get rid of the titles and replace them with postcount in hex that displays the decimal equivalent on mouseover? Very original, no?

I like Thrawn42689's suggestion of a "ruipe" system. Just it would probably be abused too much by people who don't like eachother.

...

I don't know. It sounds like it fits really well the cartoon forums (especially since the cartoon's called Weebl and Bob), but it doesn't fit Massassi style at all, in my opinion. I think this new forum software in general is a big enough step forward for a while. I'm concerned that some old members might suffer a heart failure, if you introduce TOO dramatic features.

I can't see how it could replace the title. They have nothing in common, have they? As a new feature it would be cool.

I've seen "monetary" systems on other forums, and frankly I think it would just end up promoting elitism among those with the most money. Massassi will probably remain a Communist State, as Capitalism would breed too munch dissent amoung the working class.
