That's the point of the stickies and announcment. They are comminity wide warnings. It makes it a lot simpler.

I don't think we need to be throwing "retarded' around the forums. There are plenty of other words around that can be used to get the same point across.

You must be joking. I can't take you seriously if I can't even read what you're trying to say. I really don't think Dj Yoshi is "opffended" by your ability to outwit him. I also doubt that he is "hipocritical".

Pommy, I sort of agree with you. I might use the word retarded around my friends if they all knew me and I knew they wouldn't mind.
Look at it like this though:
"This argument is retarded!"= this argument is worthy of scorn
could be seen as "retarded people are worthy of scorn"

Retarded people should be seen and respected as people. In a way, using the word retarded in a derogatory manner kind of diminishes that. If the word retarded wasn't used almost only to describe certain people, then it would be different.

That's like saying you can't say something's stupid, because it'll disrespect simply stupid people.

And we all know how many of those people there are ;).

I get your point, though.

Why bother having the rule if it's unenforced? That's how I look at it. And yes it IS completely stupid to ban somebody for posting a thread in the wrong place. But if they keep doing it, even after the thread has been moved, and they've been told, OVER AND OVER, that it doesn't belong there, then as an admin, I would punish. And since banning is about the only way of punishing someone, that's what you have to do. Yeah its stupid, but it's even stupider to not post something in the right place, even when you've been told.

And the tech forum would be getting more traffic if more people actually used it. What's the point of a tech forum if no one thinks its useful? Usually the only ones to check the forums are the ones who know that stuff. Posting it in the discussion forum usually gets you just a bunch of sarcastic remarks, suggestions for linux, and recommendations to google it yourself. Sure you are getting responses, but the Useful to Non-Useful ration is horrendous.

I remember a few years ago this forum was a heck of a lot cleaner. I know by today's standards that the forums are much cleaner than most, but still, they have deteriorated from what they used to be.

And as for sexual innuendos, maybe I didn't word it right. I'm talking about stuff that gets posted on nearly every thread anymore, pictures with this sort of stuff going on, etc.

Maybe I've been living a sheltered life, but I never see the kind of stuff that goes on here go on at my HS, nor most other places.
2004-09-27, 4:11 AM #51
With these forums moved threads automatically get a pointer to the new location where the old one was, that's passive enough enforcement. Before it often looked like moved threads were closed, now it's obvious that they've been moved and as a result people are more likely to get the hint over time.

We ban for violation of the more serious rules, we don't ban if someone absentmindedly post a topic in all caps, we don't ban if they absentmindedly post in the wrong forum, we ban if they continously and maliciously do either of these though.

Surely a sexual innuendo would be something that appears completely innocent if you're young or have led a sheltered life. Shrek is G-rated and it's completely full of innuendo.

I was under the impression that innuendo allows you to have a more mature discussion in an environment where speaking bluntly might be inappropriate.

As for the thread placement: Yes, I said that once is no biggie. I'm talking about repeat people, those who know the rule, but choose to ignore it that's all.

And for the innuendos, like I said, maybe I'm saying it the wrong way. I'll give an example later. The best examples of what I am talking about are the replies to showcase threads. "OMG I JUST PTICHED A TENT" that kind of stuff.

But I beleive in Pommys point and I know the warnings are out there to make the forums better but I still do beleive that some of them are ridiculous. This is my opinion though and I know that all the admins are just trying to stop flaming etc. and keep it g-rated but yea...

It's entirely up to Brian's wishes as to whether or not to meet the users half-way. It's his site, owned by him and run by him. If you disagree with something, you can petition him, but if he ignores you, or says, "No," there's not a damned thing you can do about it.

I said it as an admin, I've said it as an op, and I'm saying it now: if you have contacted the admin/op you have a problem with, and you still feel that they're being unfair, go to the next level (which is typically Brian). See above for what to do in that case.

I also agree that forum avatars are an awful idea. I'm sorry, I came here to post stuff worth talking about, not to post stuff worth talking about and have to look at your stupid anime pic of the moment.

for the love of ***** alpha1, stop waving that ****en little flag in every ****en thread

this is completely unrelated, but funny. on another gaming forum i've been hanging around since mid 2001, after 3+ years of the place being a haven for everything bad; porn, swearing, flaming, spam you name it, someone's parent turned up, and asked if the porn could be removed from peoples avatars/sigs.

so they're prepared to let their kid hang around a forum full of predominantly 17-23 year old males who swear like sailors, use every 2nd thread as a flame-fight and regularly discuss sex, drugs and alcohol, so long as there isn't porn?
2004-09-27, 9:21 AM #65
I put it down to the youth. Oh, these kids today!!

Seriously, most of it is probably due to what seems like the current lack of censoring. I mean, I've seen people slip in the odd b****** here and there. I don't mind retarded really, but as has been said, people do.

Oh, and to those who think you have rights? Take a look at yourself. You are a worthless person. You lose. You are insignificant. Does anyone care aside from yourself that you are a statistic? No.

And finally, Det... can you outwit another Brit?

If anyone ever tries to make Massassi totally "politically correct" I'm leaving. PCness is just something made up by people who are out to get offended by everything, and who aren't mature enough to just ignore things or take stuff in their stride. As for innuendo, it is everywhere, especially around the younger generations, and you can't expect everything to change when they come here. I agree, some things people say are just plain rude, inconsiderate, and immature, but that doesn't mean we need to censor everything all of the time. Some things do need to be addressed, but if people geep getting attention for "bad behavior" then it will only continue because attention is what they want.

That's why you've gotta mix in some other forum activity here and there, so you aren't so weighted down by the anal-retentiveness around here. Seriously, this is one of the strictest places on the internet, as far as forums go. It's nice to get away every once in a while to a place that won't edit your posts ad ban you for petty things, but Massassi still has my soul, so I can't totally leave.

A couple things:

First, the new rule seems to have reversed logic (or something) behind it. Since when does applying the word "retarded" to something automatically associate it with the mentally hadicapped? That doesn't make sense. I also have not seen an instance where the word was used as an actual insult to someone on these boards. You might also note that it's impossible to isolate all the words that everyone finds offensive, because everyone has different connotations on words.

Second, I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of consistency of rule-enforcement around here. If an entire thread is riddled with flames, what usually happens is the thread gets closed without anyone getting banned. What's the deal with that? Perhaps that was simply with the old forums, because maybe banning took longer. Such an incident hasn't come up with the new forums (that I know of), so I'm not sure.

Other than that, things seem fine around here, imo.

Oh, yeah... there are a couple of other things, too.

Why do we have swear filters on words that can be said on national TV? We can say "hell" and "damn," but not "b**ch", "b*st*rd," or "*ss." Why? That's another inconsistency. I don't really care which way the filters go: I would just like to see it consistent.

Also, we have a reasonably-sized population of religious followers on these forums. I think the admins should crack down on insults to people's faith. It doesn't happen all that often anymore, though, but I've never actually seen the admins do anything about it when it was happening. There are also indirect insults that members here may not be aware of that Christians in particular may find insulting. (see 2nd page of math thread). It doesn't bother me in particular, but I believe use of that name in that context is definitely not considered PG13.
