Half-life 2 sucks.

1. It takes 1 clip to kill one guy.. with like.. every single gun. And you can hold.. umm... enough ammo to maybe kill 3 guys if you're lucky.

2. Every single time an enemy is near, you have no goddamn idea where it will come from. There are NEVER any enemies around, EVER. They just teleport in 10 feet behind you all the time. I NEVER EVER get the first shot off. I always get shot in the back, regardless of swinging my view 360 at 100 mph like a paranoid man (which HL2 has made me become). It wears REALLY thin, NEVER EVER being able to see an enemy until you're half-dead.

3. There are NO weapons at all that are good at long range. I wouldn't really have a problem with this, except that 80% of the enemies appear beyond the ideal range for shotgun/smg (which are the only guns in the game that give you any ammo). So it takes a clip or more to take out one guy. Bleh.

4. I am SO tired of every other scene being scripted. *YAWN*. I keep wanting to get past all this bull**** so I can get to the meat of the game, but when I got to the Citadel and I was still plowing through bull****, I got a little worried.

5. Tons and tons of poor gameplay descisions. Silt Striders or whatever they're called is the worst thing ever in any game. There's NEVER any ammo for the RPG when these things are around. Sigh. I've repeated scenes greater than 20 times. I don't like dying so much.

6. Most of the game, especially the harder parts, seems more like a rat maze than a FPS. Eventually if you die enough times, you remember exactly where to step, which barrel to avoid, which machine gun to run to before the enemy does, and the way you play becomes a pre-scripted adventure. I want a godamn FPS.

7. Too many environmental hazards. I want to fight the enemy, not the level.

8. There was one place in the game that was an insta-kill button. You press a button, and you're dead. This takes the game down a few notches right there.

9. The weapons are simply ineffective. They are not fun to use. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is a total chore to use. I hate using the 9mm pistol because it's very innacurate and you'll run out of ammo with it before you can do anything notworthy with it. The desert eagle is a chore to use because.. umm.. well... if I get some ammo for it I'll let you know! Hahah!

The smg... what a piece of trash this "gun" is. This gun takes 2 or 3 clips to kill someone with. It's weak, innacurate; it's only saving grace is the grenade launcher, but again, you can only use it a few times over the course of the game. No AMMO! I NEED ****ING AMMUNITION TO ENJOY A GUN.

The pulse rifle, Unfortunately I find myself playing 99.99999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999 999999999999999999999999999999999% of the game with this stupid gun. It's not bad, but it's too innacurate. Its secondary fire is totally inneffective.

The shotun; this may actually be the only gun that is *somewhat* fun to use. The only problem is, ammo is somewhat lacking most of the time and it's short range.

The dart gun: See desert eagle.

RPG: Highly effective, NO AMMO. It's impossible to do anything with this weapon unless you're near a rocket chest, therefore, that really sucks.

Gravity gun: Not useful for killing unless you happen to have a saw blade or wrench handy. Even then, usually the saw blade is lost after one use, since there's now a wall of enemies between you and it.

Other guns I might have missed: Too meager to even mention. Though nades have uses, I admit.

10. The level design is alright... though if I have to descend another flight of stairs, jump through a hole in the rubble, etc. I will kill myself. My biggest gripe is it's just too item-dependent. See enemy. Shoot enemy. Spend 5 minutes looking for ammo and health. Repeat.

So there you have it. I just can't enjoy this game. And it's because of the lack of ammo, weapons that are chores to use, and everything else I mentioned. Using the weapons is supposed to be fun.... I'm always afraid to squeeze off a round because I'm too worried about ammo conservation. That's NO fun.

Yeah, I hate not having enough ammo for guns, especially since I go gun crazy on anything I see. That was my gripe about HL1, and I never actually beat that. In Doom 3, however, I never quite ran out of ammo. I may run out on one weapon, but I always have another to keep me busy until I stock up my reserves on the other one.

<3 Doom 3.

With some of the mods out now, Doom 3 looks to be assloads of fun. Gravity gun for it, the flashlight, gun mods, some of these...so cool looking.

I'd love to see some multiplayer maps with vehicles. <3 <3 <3

Crossbow, magnum, pistol... All great at long range. Pulse rifle is decent. As for the ammo, the game gives you what you need.

How does being scriped affect the gameplay if it is fluid and no different than real AI

As far as I noticed, you usually run until you find an unlimited ammo crate then you can take them out. Until then you have to evade them.

7-9 Don't know what you're talking about, the weapons in this game have been the most amusing for me since UT games (hated Doom3 weapons), but I guess that's rather subjective. Also, if you're playing on hard, the weapon effectiveness is decreased, so that would explain alot..

10 - When I played it, the game was smooth and I never got stuck, or had to "spend time" doing something - I just followed the game right through.

Don't conserve ammo, it's scripted to give you what you need.
2004-11-25, 8:29 PM #9
I only have two problems with HL2:

1. TOO LITTLE AMMO FOR EVERY FRIGGIN GUN

2. Too much time driving vehicles. I got sick of it after the first 5 minutes.

That's something that bothered me about HL1. All of my favorite weapons had very limited ammo, so I was forced to use guns I didn't really like. If it were up to me I would've been using the glock for the whole game.

Maybe I do "suck" at HL2. But hear me out.

You hear a bunch of nonsensical radio chatter. There must be enemies near. You swing your reticule around wildly in a futile attempt to locate the enemy. The enemy teleports into some random location and shoots you in the back. You line your reticule up on the enemy, and hold down the trigger.

...
...

Your clip runs out. "Hmm.", you think to yourself. "I had my reticule directly over the enemy over the duration of the clip." You are left standing there being shot at. There's some cover nearby, so you take it. You pop back out and finish the guy ina bout half a clip.

RINSE.

REPEAT.

Nearly every encounter in HL-2 is like the one I described above. So make of it what you will. Though I do hope you fanboys have fun insulting me.

Too scripted? Boring? Are you talking about Doom 3? If so I agree. Doom 3 was very very boring and repetitive, and SCRIPTED. It was obvious when an enemy was going to pop out, and I got sick and tired of walking and shooting, walking and shooting, walking and shooting. It got old after the first level.

HL2 may be scripted, but the gameplay kept on changing. You needed to use the physics to solve puzzles, the enemies didn't always show up in the exact same places like they did in Doom 3, you got to drive a few vehicles, the levels all screamed 'explore me!', and there is just so much much more you can do in half-life 2, and so many different ways of combat and gameplay.

If you think Half-Life 2 doesn't look good, You are 100% insane. Half-Life 2 is the most realistic looking game on the market. The faces on the characters are amazing with 40 facial muscles, it makes them look super realistic. The enviornments are very nice to look at, and sometimes you think you're looking at a photo! Unlike the overly bumpmapped and pitch black levels in Doom 3...that and the blocky player and enemy models.

SMG probably uses the most. I can take out someone with a pulse at medium range with 3 shells... SMG maybe 10-15. Magnum, 1. Crossbow, 1. Pistol, 3-5. Shotgun, 1-2.

Dunno how YOU are playing, but generally I aim for their head, not their toes.

I'm always seeing combine dropping in on ropes from above, coming through doors, etc. Zombies are usually just laying on the ground and get up when you pass by. About the only things that seem to come out of nowhere are headcrabs.

Uh... magnum owns long range, crossbow also. One shot kill in most instances. Plasma is also decent for handling these guys too.

To each his own. I enjoyed the scripted events, I thought they fit well into the gameplay, and they don't seem terribly long. Plenty of action for me.

You aren't looking too hard. There's always ammo crates with tons of em in it.

Apparently you hated HL1 then also. If you want pure action and nothing else, go play Painkiller.

8. There was one place in the game that was an insta-kill button. You press a button, and you're dead. This takes the game down a few notches right there.

Dunno where that was, but it was probably common sense that you shouldn't press it then.

I hate using the 9mm pistol because it's very innacurate and you'll run out of ammo with it before you can do anything notworthy with it. The desert eagle is a chore to use because.. umm.. well... if I get some ammo for it I'll let you know! Hahah!

Oh here we go again. The 9mm sucks, because its your first gun. So don't use it. Desert Eagle? Wtf? I think you mean magnum. Anyway, that gun rocks. You don't get much ammo because you don't need much. One shot pretty much kills everyone, unless, as I said before, you aim for their feet.
Quote:
The smg... what a piece of trash this "gun" is. This gun takes 2 or 3 clips to kill someone with. It's weak, innacurate; it's only saving grace is the grenade launcher, but again, you can only use it a few times over the course of the game. No AMMO! I NEED ****ING AMMUNITION TO ENJOY A GUN.

If it takes you 2-3 clips to kill someone, you must be sniping with it or something. All you have to do is aim for the head, they go down REALLY quick. I can take out 4-5 combine with it, one clip. And there is freakin ammo EVERYWHERE for this gun. I mean, for crying out loud, your dune buggy had an ammo thing in the back for it. I have so much ammo for this gun its coming out my ears.

It's inaccurate because it was intended as a medium range heavy assult weapon, not sniping. And the secondary fire is awesome against manhacks.
Quote:
The shotun; this may actually be the only gun that is *somewhat* fun to use. The only problem is, ammo is somewhat lacking most of the time and it's short range.

I use this gun a LOT. And the ammo is a little short on it, but I've yet to actually run out.
Quote:
The dart gun: See desert eagle.

You mean the crossbow and magnum. Crossbow is insta-kill, and is only supposed to be used for far away targets. And the ammo is short because you are supposed to use it sparingly. If they loaded you up with ammo, you'd be using it like a machine gun, since it is a one hit kill.
Quote:
RPG: Highly effective, NO AMMO. It's impossible to do anything with this weapon unless you're near a rocket chest, therefore, that really sucks.

That might be because its intended for taking out ships, not attacking poor combine soldiers. In the couple of instances where I actually found it handy, I still had ammo from the previous battle against a ship. I think you need to use nades a lot more, they're everywhere.
Quote:
Gravity gun: Not useful for killing unless you happen to have a saw blade or wrench handy. Even then, usually the saw blade is lost after one use, since there's now a wall of enemies between you and it.

It's a selling point for HL2, I'll give you that. But the sawblade is easy to keep with you. Just gotta watch where your firing it. Aim it at a wall and it'll cut thru the guy and stick in the wall, and a secondary fire shot will bring it right back.
Quote:
Other guns I might have missed: Too meager to even mention. Though nades have uses, I admit.

Crowbar is your GOD. Pheropods were fun but pointless. Nades are great for spamming and taking out the damned gun turrets.

Most ammo/health is like right next to the enemies. But meh.

I'm always afraid to squeeze off a round because I'm too worried about ammo conservation. That's NO fun.

So there you have it. No lack of ammo in reality (Remember, their heads are not on the floor, but on their necks! AIM HIGHER), weapons are fun if you use them for their intended purpose, and there was nothing else you mentioned besides scripting, and that's purely opinion.
2004-11-25, 8:57 PM #25
I honestly haven't had a hard time killing any of the monsters/enemies on Easy and Medium...

Most of the combine soldiers take either 1-2 Shotgun shells, or a few 9mm Pistol shots.
