using the gravity gun to hold a barrel in front of me for some cover.

fireing explosive barrels and the small gas cylinders into the zombies and using weapons at appropriate times. Also, I use the sound of the headcrabs to find them in the dark. I can even survive during onsluahts of black-poison headcrabs+suberzombies.

If I ever feel that the situation is too difcult, I just run away to find cover.

If I do die, I try a different stratergy.

My favorite strategy is "walk towards the enemy firing your pistol until I get into firing range of the smg than open hell onto them" works really well early in the game.

That's not strategy; more like a waste of time. Who's going to carry a barrel around with them everywhere? First of all, okay, you have a barrel with you. It takes at least 3 seconds to switch your weapon, during which time you've probably already been shot. If not, you're cowering behind some scrawny barrel and the enemy knows exactly where you are. Why not keep your weapon at the ready at all times, so you can simply shoot him, instead of being 1337 and carrying a barrel with you wherever you go?

Not to mention bullets go through barrels.

you dont carry it everywhere, you pick it up if it's there and throw it at the enemy. it's a very good strategy.

oh and it takes less than a second. press q.

and... uhm... no they dont, yoshi. unless for some reason whenever i picked up a barrel, the combine started having horribly bad aim... most of the bullets hit the barrel and sparks flew to the side.

Yeah, AFAIK, bullets don't go through anything but (non-bulletproof) glass. Not even wooden pallets (though they DO break). And, point taken, Cazor.

Here is something that you players should really know about being good at this game: USE THE LAST WEAPON BUTTON (DEFAULT Q). It really helps you a LOT. Its a nice way of switching between a long range weapon and a short range weapon without having to press no more than one key. Best combo would be to switch between the shotgun and the magnum. Shotty for short range, magnum for long range.
