My cousin just left the Maldives yesterday, lucky her. What parts aren't submerged/flooded are only one metre above sea level.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Yahoo has it at over 7000 dead

That's like, umm, something that should have been on TV world wide, and it wasn't. Seriously, I learned about this from you people. My deepest simpothys to those people.

Wow. Could you imagine being on a boat out in the middle of the ocean during that?

I get terribly angry at news broadcasts of this and similar disasters. Reports go in the style of "Thousands of locals have been killed in this disaster, but more importantly some British tourists may have been slightly inconvenienced!".

One of those super disasters that leave the world in shock and despair.

It will take forever for some of those communities to recover. The poor of those hit locations took the brunt of the deaths; they also probably suffered the most damage to their material posessions, such as weakly built homes that were wiped out by the waves.

Same thing here. "Thousands are dead, and we have some reports that a few Australians may have gone missing." Well, with definite news like that...
2004-12-26, 6:46 PM #21
watching it on the news right now, am i hearing it right? the tsunami was going 500 mph? wtf?
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
2004-12-26, 6:53 PM #22
They move pretty damn fast.

Our local news station is now reporting is a 9.0....

YOU DON'T ROUND THESE THINGS UP DAMMIT!

They're saying nearly 12,000 people have died now... my dad apparently read 11,800.

over the sea the tsunami moves at 500ish kph, but near the shoreline it slows down to something like 50kph, still bloodly fast if you ask me, normal waves move at what....10kph (guess) and aren't anywhere near as big.....

saw in the paper today a picture which just summed it all up...two guys sitting on the back of a pickup with their backs to the cab, in front of them covered by two sheets are thiers wives who were killed as the wave hit, the look on one of the guys faces as the camera caught him looking at his dead wifes body, totally and utterly lost....

don't get many global disasters like this in a lifetime, we've lived through two....9/11 and this....

This is the biggest natural disaster of our time.

Latest estimates have the casulties at well over 20,000. Some are saying 24,000-25,000, and it's still expected to grow.

CNN has it over 23 000 now.

9 would be rounded up. 9.0 isn't. That's actually the latest estimate of the quake's strength anyway. It may very well climb as more is learned. Unfortunately the deathtoll will likely do the same as tens of thousands are still unaccounted for and the current death toll already at 23,700.

Wait.... are you trying to say that 9.0 != 9?

Somebody needs to go back to grade 4 math.

No, what he's saying is that in the scientific community, writing 9 without a decimal is usually used to represent an approximation while 9.0 would be a precise mesure.

I'm glad I live in Arizona. Worst we get is the occaisional dust storm.

That's not true, we always heard about minor flash floods "somewhere else" and also...well, yeah, dust storms. And a light dusting of snow, that one year.

I agree, it's seriously frustrating to have the same amount of time spent recounting the thousands of deaths as to the handful of missing holidaymakers. But that's how we think. After the first 'holy cow' when I heard about this, I immediately started working out whether I still had friends holidaying over there and how far away Bali is (friend living there). We care about those close to us, even just geographically. Accounts for alot of the crappiness in the world.

I never realized the brits were so jaded. To think that your newscasts might care more about inconvienced travellers more than the thousands of dead...

Explains alot, I guess.

What the **** sir?

Seriously, either you're being sarcastic, or you should shut the hell up now. I'm not even british, and that offended ME. Why? Because Americans get the same exact news treatment.
