8.9 magnitude quake off Asia

Yeah, first time I've really donated to an international relief agency - and there are plenty of them working on this area due to the Tsunami.

I donated $100 to the US Fund of UNICEF.

Did it after hearing about the disaster all day at work from people and on news today (since first day of work since holidays) and I realize that I have a lot of money that I'm just saving up. Instead of saving up for myself - why not help others a little.

http://www.usaid.gov/locations/asia_near_east/tsunami/ngolist.html

That's a good link to credible agencies accepting donations for South Asia.

More than 30 tremors after quake that may have given world the wobbles

By Richard Macey
December 29, 2004

Aftershocks from Sunday's earthquake - which may have wobbled the world on its axis and even slightly changed its rotation speed - continued to shake Indian Ocean islands yesterday.

By noon yesterday, 48 hours after the magnitude 9.0 quake, Geoscience Australia had recorded 31 aftershocks.

"They ranged between magnitude 5.5 and 7.3," said Cvetan Sinadinovski, the duty seismologist. Although the magnitude had been decreasing, "the probability of more aftershocks is very high. I think they will last for weeks".

Dr Sinadinovski said the aftershock pattern suggested the seismic activity was shifting north, towards Nicobar Island.

Some aftershocks may have involved a new complex of faults, on the same general fault line, being activated by Sunday's quake. "But this is speculation."

It was also possible that a magnitude 8.1 quake north of Macquarie Island, near Tasmania, early on Christmas Eve may have played a small, indirect, role in the disaster.

"The Tasmanian event was also huge in size. Although it did not directly trigger the Sumatra event it could have sped up the release process," Dr Sinadinovski said. It could have "started to unbalance the situation ... It is not uncommon to have a pair of earthquakes on different sides of tectonic plates".

Sunday's quake may have given the world such a jarring that it wobbled slightly on its axis, changing the length of the day, US geophysicists claimed.

"I would expect that the Earth wobbled in its orbit when the earthquake occurred due to the massive amount of energy exerted and the sudden shift in mass," Ken Hudnut, of the US Geological Survey, told Agence France-Presse.

Thomas Herring, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Newsday that a change in the Earth's rotation could be induced by a quake shifting large blocks of the planet's crust. If material was pushed towards the Earth's core, the spin would increase. If it was pushed towards the surface, the rotation would slow.

Newsday also quoted Richard Gross, a gravity expert with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, as saying that if a quake sent a large slab of material sinking into the Earth it could increase the Earth's spin, reducing the length of the day by less than three millionths of a second. "It's probably not even measurable."

However, seismologists agreed this week that the Eurasian tectonic plate that shifted, causing the tsunami, rose, rather than sank.

"That earthquake has changed the map," Dr Hudnut said. "Based on seismic modelling, some of the smaller islands off the south-west coast of Sumatra may have moved to the south-west by about 20 metres. That is a lot of slip." Sumatra's north-western tip may also have shifted south-west about 36 metres.

There's that middle news report, if anyone is interested. The Victorian government aparently donated $1.5 million, and I'll go and donate what I can tomorrow. Every little bit helps...

How unfortunate..

I didn't hear about the news until the afternoon when my father got off work. I see a lot of destruction pictures, but I was wondering if anyone took a picture of the huge waves?
2004-12-30, 1:30 AM #84
Thats also what I'm looking for, but I think any one close enough to take a picture would be dead...

Hey maybe this is the beginning of the end of the world...Its getting close to 2012. After all those freaky hurricanes around Florida, and now this. Yup, worlds over.

Death toll now at ~120,000...
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

it was called a tremor because that is all it was by the time it hit any populated areas.

also, the slowdown of the earth's rotation was about as much as a year's worth of natural slowdown.

I heard the earth sped up. At least I thought that's what they said on CNN

The plates were pushed out by the quake, so the earth's spin slowed.

CNN was showing satellite photos before and after the quake hit. The devastation was really apparent when I saw it on such a large scale. I feel really bad for all the people caught in that. :(

Call me cynical but I'm not sure I trust man's ability to measure a 0.000003 second change in the Earth's rotation.

edit - Then again, it's just scientist theorizing so ...

Your logic was not flawed, though. According to the theory, the quake caused the plates to become more compact. The inverse of what you said.

A year's worth?? uhh no...at most it was a second's worth, and I think it sped up not slowed down.

For those of you that are wanting to see the pics of huge curling waves, you're looking at the wrong event. That kind of thing didn't happen. It's more like the ocean just swells up really big and the tide comes in really really far...really really fast. It's not really what you think of when you say tsunami.

You wouldn't even notice. Tsunamis only reach a height of a few inches in the open ocean.

Sometimes I hate people. A certain unnamed large popular forum is running a contest for guessing the final death toll. I consider myself to have a fairly dark sense of humour, but that's just excessively stupid.

That just is something awful, isn't it?

Yoshi, that was my first thought too. But after searching for 15 minutes, I can find no mention of the "contest." I can't really think of any other forum it could be on either...

Never mind, I found it now. It's a bit down the page on their general forum. My disappointment in the human race has yet again failed to subside.

Though I must admit, they have more serious threads about the disaster than I expected. Doesn't make the one right though.

you missunderstood me, the change in the speed of rotation was the same as the change over a year. make sure you read the whole post and think about what it means.

so what, I said it slowed down instead of saying it sped up. the truth still stands that the earth's rotation slows down by about 1 second over 100 years.

well..in the middle of the ocean, sure. But close to shore? Thats when it becomes a huge tsunami. If it's in the middle of the ocean, it's just a bit of rushing water.

This quake and tsunami has a lot of interesting geologic features. The divergent boundries off the coast there must have caused a collasp of one oceanic floor fault, but it's larger than usual. The convection currents that's moving the asethenosphere around must have caused an "aftershock" earthquake, where there where many earthquakes that let loose at the same time.

Hurray for oceanic floor spreading and Alfred Wegner! Contiental drift is proven once again.

[Edit:] ...at the cost of thousands of lives. :(
