Hurricane Katrina Largest in US History...
2005-08-28, 12:34 PM #1
It's beyond a Category 5 right now. THe reporters are calling it a 5 1/2. I'm happy it missed FL. but now i'm just worried cuz it's going straight for New Orleans, which is where one of my good friends, Courtney, lives.

They are saying the town is going to probably become completely flooded and 100,000 people are currently stranded, be it tourists who didnt leave in time, or homeless citizens as well as citizens who dont have the means to get out.

My prayers are with all of them. I hope all is ok. This is going to be a HORRIBLE storm. One of the Largest if not THE largest to hit land in US. History! :gbk:  :gbk:

I'm glad I live in Arizona. No earthquakes, no tornados, no hurricanes, no blizzards... It's just hot.

I thought that 175 MPh winds were supposed to stay in tornadoes. Not in big 100 mile wide storms. This is a Really Bad Thing (TM).

Even worse my Uncle lives down there. There is a possibility that they will stay up here for a while. And so will my cousin David.

Gas prices will go high again soon. My dad works with Marathon, and there's a few refineries down there. FILL UP YOUR TANKS NOW before it gets expensive.
I had a blog. It sucked.

They said If there are any tornadoes they'll be F3's close to the eye wall. I know from experience that F1's and F'2s are bad enough but F'3s......that's just ludacris. The downpours and wind from the storm itself won't help anything either. I'm confident that the people down there will know how to handle it though.

On a side note, did anyone out there know there was a band called Katrina and The Waves? Kind of ironic I think.

I live about 73 miles north west of New Orleans, and boy can I tell you this is really scary. Usually durring hurricane's we joke around, through some badass parties, but now, its not looking that way. The New Orleans levees are about 18 ft high, and it estimated that water from surges at the river will rise to about 28 feet. New orelans will be anywhere from 10-15 feet underwater in the worst case. This really sucks cause I have a lot of friends from new orleans. Over here we will get some nasty gust..prolley Cat 4 Hurricane type winds. I hope to make it alright. Keep all those along the Gulf Coast in your prayers.

New Orleans is my FAVORITE city ever. I'm not kidding, I plan to live there when I retire... if this takes out the french quarters, mother nature is going to get a big kick in the boob from me.

Yeah i'm praying for the people over there. it's starting to make landfall. last I heard it went down from 175 to 165 but that's still a cat. 5.

Yeah they have said it's likely the french quarter wont even be there, and that new orleans is going to flood. I hope all that could get out have gotten out. It's starting to make landfall (well the outer-bands) i've been glued to the tv all day and havent been able to get a hold of my friend. I just pray her and her family are alright.

And I hope the Superdome keeps through the storm. there are about 20,000 people in there, if that thing caves in that's going to be horrible. I hope everyone is alright, there's def. noway this thing is going to pass without causing a few deaths.

4th category 5 in US history, it's crazy. Lets just hope they all are ok when it's gone through  :gbk:

LEAVE THE FQ ALONE! GODAMN YOU MOTHERNATURE!

I may sound like I'm kidding, but I'm serious, New Orleans is possibly the most beautiful, most culturally different, and most amazing place I've ever visited. I'm going to seriously be upset if something isn't remaining.

Yeah, and alsoooo I almost forgot since there is water below them they say they bury their dead above ground and that dead bodies will probably be floating around bringing diseases etc, and that they'll be days without water. Eh, lets just hope by some miracle people are safe.

They keep mentioning crocodiles, snakes, west nile virus...doesnt sound good. not at all

Yeah and I guess ten thousand morons (I repeat: THEY ARE MORONS!) have decided they refuse to evacuate. Yeah, way to think this one through, people. You're city is about to be under on average 25 feet of water. The damage prediction ranges from "major" to "total" and the fact is you honestly cannot expect to survive a storm with 150mph winds. Yeah, you know, I'm sure staying there is a good idea.

To make it even dumber, they all have decided to hole up in the superdome. Good call there, too. Cause, you know, 150mph winds might not taunt the structural integrity of that thing... and then you know, that whole 25 feet of water thing might not help either. That is some really stupid ****.

Snake, crocodiles and dead bodies floating around? That's not the main problem really. Aside from structural damage (French Quarter probably won't even exist anymore) there are other problems. From the Yahoo article:
Quote:
For years, forecasters have warned of the nightmare scenario a big storm could bring to New Orleans, a bowl of a city that's up to 10 feet below sea level in spots and dependent on a network of levees, canals and pumps to keep dry from the Mississippi River on one side, Lake Pontchartrain on the other.

The fear is that flooding could overrun the levees and turn New Orleans into a toxic lake filled with chemicals and petroleum from refineries, as well as waste from ruined septic systems.

This is really saddening. Apart from the lives that may be lost, a really beautiful city might be nearly destroyed. Kirby is right, the place is (was) amazing.

And as for lacking survival instincts, the people hiding in the stadium because they couldn't get out in time are nothing. There are thrill seekers who go to Florida specifically for the hurricanes and tie themselves to trees to feel the full effect. I guess everybody needs hobbies.

I'm sure that many of them simply didn't have a choice. Some of them may have been ignorant, but honestly do you expect that every single person in every city in America would have the money to be able to abandon their home on just several days notice?

I'm sure most of them have their reasons. Sure, many are probably merely ignorant to the incredible power of the storm, but many of them also simply couldn't evacuate.

It's odd. These hurricanes smash through all your south-eastern states, go up the coast, and totally vanish when it gets to newfoundland.

oh my god, the french quarters is so beautiful.... I really hope it doesn't flood like they said it might/might not. I'm not kidding, that'll ruin one of the few things in my future that I was pretty much sure of.

Wrong. Orleans was flooded 30 years ago.

Wasn't it?

And about the dead bodies and crocs and stuff... I'm sure that many of them would be tossed far from New Orleans to be of any... er... threat.

This just in: Katrina decided to take a little detour and it is now in easter Finland, I just tried to go for a cigarette but I couldn't get the balcony door open because it's so windy
Yeah, you stay here and take life seriously. I'll go and have some fun.

Matt: Katrina was supposed to be worse than that one.

But it's great the hurricane is starting to die down so fast.
