Quake 4

I've been playing the SP on and off lately, and I'm finding it AWESOMELY enjoyable. It's, as some would say, the game Doom 3 should've been...only it's not really scary. I think it kept the feel of Quake, while at the same time showing an evolution.

Here's some pics, replace 001 with up to 0024

http://yoshmaista.shockzero.com/q4001.png

Also, the game runs EXCELLENTLY, much better than Doom 3. The screens you see here are with everything on highest, 2xAA, I think 8xAF.

Yeah I want this game super hardcore. But for some reason, none of the EB Games stores here haveit yet..

OK. I still can't play it.

This, people, is why you need to buy me an XBox-360.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Also, I haven't tested out the MP, but I hear it's Q3 reborn into awesomeness.

Those are some of the most obvious transitions between level and skybox I've ever seen. :p

I think that's the point. But it looks cool, I like the artsy feel to it.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to check it out if it stays pretty true to the style of Quake and Quake 2.

I heard the MP is pretty much like Quake 3 but that's about it.

The only thing weird are the squads...they don't feel right. But they are useful, and most of the time it's still just soloish stuff.

I've got a few second clip of video, and if I could figure out how to encode it and compress it I'd post it, but no way in hell am I uploading 150 megs of video for like 20-30 seconds worth of footage.

Compressed, that should be maybe 5-8mb.

Yeah, I know, I used fraps to capture it, and I'm trying to figure out how to compress it right.

Every single review I've read so far, says they killed multiplayer. They said it's pretty damn lame.
Think while it's still legal.

The reviews also gave it a 60 or something. Reviews also gave Doom 3 a 93% in PCG. I don't trust reviews much anymore.

Movie of me playing, sorry for the brightness, fraps doesn't do any gamma adjustment from the video card, apparrently. It's not really anywhere near that dark (check the screenshots).

Edit: If quicktime tries to handle it and won't let you play because of missing codecs, right click->save as and play with a codec handling media player of choice. The codec is XviD

I'd write an interesting anecdote about that video and the game, but I am unable to see my keyboard in this dark loomey room filled with demons behind every wall.

Except it's not really much like Doom 3. The weapons are different, it's brighter, squad-based, more action oriented, and the MP is supposed to be actually fun and interesting (except some reviewers are saying it's lame, I've heard personal accounts say it's awesome...dunno.)

At least try it, or wait for a demo to be released (which there probably will be one).

To be honest, the game reminds me a lot of UT2k3/4

I don't care about anything you just said except MP. And I like Q3. So I'll just play that.

....look, not trying to start a flamewar or something.

It's just that I'm soooo sick of these generic FPS. I've been duped out of way too much money for a very unsatisfying personal experience. The only FPS since JK I don't regret buying is UT and RC. And trust me, I've bought most of them. :(

They're all the same. None of them bring anything new to the table at all, except new levels and different graphics.

Yoshi from what I can tell you are not at the point in the SP where it becomes more fun. Right now it feels like D3 with the movement.... it will feel like QUAKE soon enough and then the game really becomes more fun to play.

Yeah, I agree. The marketing for this game sucked. I think they were partly benching on the name Quake 4 alone. But when Quake 3 came out - I remember the mass amounts of press and everything. I bought it just because it was the 'talk' of the storm. The big Q3 vs UT debates - so I bought both.

I haven't heard anyone talk about Q4 at all though... :( And to me, the JO/JA games had a very floaty and fake feel to it, which is why I never liked them as much. So I think I'll wait for a demo first.

Like Freelancer said, there's been way to many generic first person shooters lately

Freelancer makes a valid point.

EDIT: Yea, Max Payne isn't an FPS. Speaking of Max Payne though, when is their new game coming out?

A Quake 4 thread... damn, being the id-fanboy that I am, this means I'll be forced to post!

Anyway, I got the game on Thursday, I'm about halfway through the single-player (I think). It is, in a word, hardcore. Seriously, this game rapes Doom 3 so hard it's not even funny. And this is coming from someone who actually enjoyed Doom 3.

The weapons are fantastic (<3 the nailgun, the grenade launcher and hyperblaster, as well the dark matter gun). Most of your weapons will also get upgrades over time, such as an increased rate of fire or larger clip sizes.

I feel it bears mentioning that the dark matter gun is one of the coolest weapons in any game, ever. Essentially, it fires a huge black hole that sucks any enemies and moveable objects in the environment towards it before exploding and hurling everything away. Needless to say, this looks very, very cool.

The really big outdoor areas are noticeably underdetailed, but these areas are few and far between. The interior areas, as expected, have a unholy amount of detail. Most of the levels are lit well enough, though some are still dim, and a few are pitch black. Fear not! The machine gun has an attached flashlight, and your sqaudmates' weapons also have flashlights - in fact, the light beams shining from their weapons in darkened areas is one of the most impressive effects in the game (along with firing the dark matter gun).

Speaking of squadmates - unlike Doom 3, you're rarely alone in Quake 4 (at least up to the point I've played). Their AI is pretty good, and later on in the tougher levels, I've found their help is invaluable, especially since medics will restore your health and engineers your armor.

There are two vehicles, the hovertank and walker. I didn't particularly enjoy the hovertank sequence, but the walker is fun. And if you happen to not enjoy the vehicles, you can rest easy knowing that the sequences are at least short and fairly easy, as your vehicle's armor will regenerate over time.

There are some very memorable scripted sequences, such as the introduction of your sqaud's sniper, and later on in the game when your sqaud gets attacked by a Harvester.

Btw, Harvesters > everything

I'll post some screens later.

Holy crap that was long.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.
2005-10-21, 11:38 PM #38
Screens, just like I said.

I bought the Special Edition today, for it and Quake II.

I love the death match so far. Except that level with the platforms in space.
