HL2 really wasn't for me. At least the parts I played. It just lacked atmosphere. For pity's sake, you went running through a sky bright city, into a disgusting sewer, into a sewer river on some ugly half-butted sea-doo thing than back into sewer like things. ugh. Not my kinda atmosphere.

Though I'm not crazed about ANY vehicle sequences in FPS, i thought Quake's were relatively better.

I bought hl2 on the day it was released, and it took me 8 months to beat it... The game is so damn boring!

I have a feeling the MP will be unpopular, but AMAZINGLY fun to play with others, espescially at a LAN. Painkiller is a prime example of this.

Is there a demo out? I want to see if my compy can run this thing, but I'm not exactly sure it'd be easy for me to get my hands on it.

From what I;ve seen and heard. Quake 4's multiplayer is almost exactly like Quake 3.

Well, if it isn't broken, don't fix it.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

Half-Life 2 lacked atmosphere.
Wow.

Well... it wasn't interesting. I got bored and just quit. I still haven't beat it, and I'm... god I can't remember. I'm in that big building where you have to disable the things with the gravity gun.

But... Half Life 2 had awesome atmosphere!

The atmosphere was ok. I never said anything about the atmosphere. The game was just... dull. Some of the dialouge and situations were interesting, but the game as a whole was just another game.

Anyways, the first few levels just killed it for me. I really REALLY didn't dig running through a stinking sewer killing people and knowing of know real storyline. Sorry, it was just... not me.

I'd much rather run around a dark, creepy corridor killing monsters from hell. Thats it. Thats all. Sweet atmosphere.

Did you like hl1? I thought that had awsome atmosphere. and it was suttle, it didnt need big cinematic sceenes to make it awesome.
Take that there and put it in here

When did this thread become anti-HL2?

IMO HL2 was very immersive. Haven't played something so interesting since Deus Ex. Physics puzzles!

As for Q4, I am curious to see how people react to Q4MP.

I like both Hl2, and Quake 4, heck I just bought Doom 3 because im enjoying Quake 4.

I loved the HL2 atmosphere! But I guess we all have our different opinions, don't we? :)

Some are just more correct than others! :D :D

Or, as I like to say, "I support other people's opinions as long as their opinions are the same as my opinions."

I disliked HL2 all the way up until I got to the striders. At that point, it became actually kind of fun...then for a while it became lame again...then at the citadel it was neat. Quake 4 kind of reminds me of the Citadel, to be honest, and you'll see why when/if you get the game.

Let's just say I'd much rather blast Strogg to smithereens than see another goddamn headcrab hiding in the dark as if I can't detect it.

I'm gonna play Quake 4 on my friend's PC first though, to see how I like it. I'm really strapped for cash at the moment, so it has to be a rock-solid game for me to buy it.

I loved HL2's atmosphere. The day it came out I played it from 7a to 11p, had it beat in 16 hours... 13 if you don't count the 3 used for work/eating/bathroom breaks.

2005-10-28, 8:39 AM #139
Some people like Quake, some people like Pinochet.

Woo hoo, big deal.

Yoshi: From back in the JK days, for converting movies: http://www.radgametools.com/smkdown.htm Haven't used them in forever, so I don't totally remember all the things they can do...

Jep: If you like the dark corners with monsters, than you should have enjoyed the Ravenholm level. I don't know how much of HL2 you got through, but from the point you enter Nova Prospekt until you enter the Citadel is basically pure FPS combat. There are a few slower parts, but the I loved the levels where you fight you're way through the city. Very immersive and intense particularily the first time you play it. Bullets flying at you from every direction. To each his own, though.

I saw Q4 at Best Buy for $59.99 and said no thank you. Last game I bought was HL2, and I don't think I'm going to buy any new ones for awhile.

No I'm not, I don't like a game, I get rid of it. And when I mean didn't like it, I mean it was totally ****ty. I hated every moment of it. It was a poor start of a game, and it didn't pull me into it. Hell, I liked my experience in Star Wars Galaxies better than that, and lord knows I hated that game with a passion.

On the other hand, I could easily get all my money back at the store within a few days, so thats what I did.

Ouch, that's saying something. I guess I can understand though. Until you fight the chopper on the swampboat, the games' pretty boring. Couple of cool physics puzzles, but other than that...

But you can't return the game, since Steam marks that game copy to your account...

So... its still yours...

And I don't see how anyone could possibly hate that part, I thought it was downright AWESOME. So unbelievably fun, original, the gun addition was even better, the physics were great, etc etc.
2005-10-29, 11:31 PM #150
I'm with you Cool Matty. Hell everything about that game was frigging awesome right from the very start. The atmoshpere, the graphics, the physics, the characters.
I could go on endlessly just dribbling compliments but I won't.

And I'd also like to know how the returning worked what with how steam works.

Yes, it was sarcasm.

And I thought HL2 was fairly enjoyable. I didn't think it was the "best game evar!" like some people, but it was good.

yup.

The rest of the game was literally a chore to play, I absolutely hated the vehicle parts. The Citadel was awesome though, knowing i'd end up there was probably the only reason I kept playing. To start with I played through until the gun got attached to the boat, at which point I thought "jeez, enough of the boat parts already, I don't care if it has a gun or not" and went to play FF10 for a couple of weeks.

Deus Ex still blows it out of the water. It got about an 7.0 or somewhere around there for me. They just took parts and extended them far too long, making you go too far between action sequences. Q4 is good about keeping the action going while creating different environments and continuing the story.

I bought quake4 from wal-mart yesterday. Because they mispriced the special dvd edition I got it for 50 bucks (everywhere else sells it for 60). Got home, realized my main computer still doesn't have a dvd drive, so I mounted the dvd on my laptop and copied the pk4 files over to my main box. (This is all linux). After that, ran the installer, game works perfectly on linux. I remember doom3 ran a lot better under linux than windows anyway.

The game itself: I've been through 3 or so missions. It definitely captured the feel of quake 2, but the sound effects and intensity of everything is much higher (which is a good thing). I miss the music from quake II though, it was better than this.

After I finish the game, I'll have more opinions, I'm sure, but so far it's fun.
