The problem with the Doom 3 engine is that it's lighting system doesn't really make large areas terribly easy to create without destroying the framerate. This engine is really designed for the future, when everyone has much better computers. Until then, Ravensoft and co are doing the best they can to use as much of the engine as possible to render large areas and complicated areas of whatever specification.

I mean, the D3 engine has the capability for Softshadows too, just like Half-life but with a difference - they'd be dynamic. Just at the moment, our comps aren't quite up to scratch.

Until then... outdoor areas will suck. I believe at the moment they're lit using ambient areas and just telling the engine to prject shadows from an angle.

[/technical information]

That said, it does look rather much like Doom 3 - the difference isn't that great in terms of texturing/models. They're even using the same blood effects.

I might get it, not sure yet. I was hoping to do some mapping for my portfolio, so I'll probably be forced to buy it :p

That's just something you'll have to find out on your own (I.E. I'm not done with the game yet).

Ever played F.E.A.R. or The Chronicals of Riddick? They both support reatime softshadows.

Riddick doesn't support fully dynamic softshadows, iirc. FEAR has CRAZY lag with them on--according to HardOCP. And that's with a 7800GTX.

Oh wow, this game is totally awesome. I totally love the mention of the events of the first game. The one thing that somewhat made it less interesting was right off the bat they mention Quake 2's marine destroying the leader of the Strogg, the Macron. Right away, to me, this new adventure sonds that much less epic. heheh. but thats just me.

And I'm frankly sad that these days, they can't do a First Person Shooting without an half-assed vehicle part. If I wanna play a driving game, I'll go play one of my rally racing games, if I wanna shoot... well... I'm stuck driving anyways. It was decent, but I think more on foot levels would have been better for me.

Still, its the first game with "next-gen" graphics that I play. The last game I've played was Call of Duty 1 and Morrowind. So I personally am blown by all this sweet stuff. Sadly, is ****ing hard on my system.

Especially being turned into a fricking Strogg... HOLY ****!!!!

Here's a shot of gore for all gore lovers :

Indeed, I'm just past that point right now. The enemies are starting to be little *****es--it's hard to get through every sequence alive.

I think you guys should read it more carefully again. I seriously think that what you did was pathetic. And no, I didnt mean to evade swears. Its a stinking word I use all the time. Get a grip on yourself, seriously.

There was no need to try to humiliate me like an idiot, and that proved your maturity.

A private message warning would have done a better and less infuriating job. Instead you chose to change my words and try to humiliate me into stopping.

Yep, thats how full of sense the rules at Massassi are.

Telling me not to say **** was one thing. Would've been quite acceptable. Going about it the way it was done, thats what pissed me off.

He didn't call you pathetic. He called what you did pathetic. Rather large difference, and rather true.

Edit: well, at least the second time around. ;) didn't see that first one up there

I am suprised no one said that what I did was immature.

ANyway, im enjoying Quake 4 alot... More than Doom 3 at least.

Its quite fun. Not amazing, but it is enjoyable to run around like a madman shooting things :D

Oh, and if any of you feel the need to call me immature or show me how I was being pathetic, please PM me. Do not post it on this thread.

All right guys. Let's just continue on. What happened, happened. All I will say is that Jepman, you should have taken this to PM.

Edit: beaten...sorta.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Um, that's a rendering, in a game. Not a picture of a human being. Have you ever been outside? And seen a real person?

Alright, you got me on a technicality, haha. But I hope you still understood my point. I don't necessarily disagree with it, I really appreciate the decency standards that keep this board from being like every other twisted internet board, but surely you can also appreciate that it's strange. ;)

Playing around with the editor.

I want to make a DM level with water, but I dont think there is water in the engine?

That's a mighty impressive looking level.

There's no water in Qauke 4 by default, nor was there in Doom 3. However, seeing as there's been little change in the engine between the games, the community made water materials for Doom 3 would likely work with Quake 4.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

Does quake 2 have anything to do with quake 1? or are the storie lines completely different? I never played quake 2 but i thought the story in quake 1 was awsome. Slipgates and all..

Completely different storylines.
Does quake 2 have anything to do with quake 1? or are the storie lines completely different? I never played quake 2 but i thought the story in quake 1 was awsome. Slipgates and all..
Not really. Quake 2 (and 4 I presume) is its own story line. Quake 1 was a bit of a rip off of Doom's story with hellish creatures entering our world through teleporters made by the marines while Quake 2 was an invasion of the Strogg's homeworld by the marines. The Strogg are a bunch of cyborgs who use the flesh of their enemies to create their armies are have no ties to the hellish demons and such from Quake 1. Quake 3 doesn't really fit in anywhere since its just a MP arena game using Quake's name as a means of gaining an audience.
The cake is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!
2005-10-26, 6:43 PM #120
Oh i see. Thats kind of lame as i thought quake 1 was really cool. Still quake 4 looks like its worth buying. And i was more satisfyied with doom 3 than hl2 as it gave me what i expected. Unlike hl2 which had no puzzels like the first.
Take that there and put it in here
