Pirates of the Dead Man's Chest
2006-07-06, 12:13 AM #1
Just got back from watching it.. very good movie. not really sure as of yet what I think of it in comparison to the first film.. well, maybe just a little bit...

The first movie seemed MORE like a pirate movie. Lost treasure and such.. skeleton pirates and everything. where as the new one seems more like a sea going fantasy with pirates in it (as shown in the trailer.) So in that aspect it seems that the first movie is infact better.

Dead Man's chest also seemed like it was trying to leach off the first movie, and it really didn't need to.. I didn't like this aspect much of it either. there are some phrases and situations that are DIRECTLY from the first movie, and where as they made me laugh the first time, it just had me shaking my head this time, thinking, "did they really try that again?" (you'll know which scenes I am talking about)

Also the movie kinda drags for the first half. The plot isn't really introduced until about an hour into it. This kinda LOWERS it's "rewatch" value.

Though, on the other hand, once the plot IS finally introduced this movie becomes AWESOME. The effects and sets are unbelievable. (I especially liked the "pipe organ" room, you'll know it when you see it.)

The make-up effects were spectacular, and it seems as if they used practical make up and CG together flawlessly to make a totally believable "world".

Again, it is Very hard to say which one was better in my eyes, but just rest assured that it's worth your $7.50

I like it when a movie is released at around the same time worldwide.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

When is Pirate 3 coming out anyways? I had a buddy tell me once that they were for the most part, being filmed at the same time and that they would be released one following the other similar to Kill Bill. Is that true or will the other movie also take a couple of years?

They filmed 2 and 3 back to back / in sync (like the Matrix Reloaded and the Matrix Revolutions) and are releasing them a year apart

(But 3 isn't done yet)

Aye, I figured we'd get to see Bootstrap from the moment I found out the main bad guy was Davy Jones himself. Which is damn awesome.

Generally, I really dislike it when sequels try and do this.

Oh my. I have very mixed feelings about this movie. I can't tell if I hate it or love it. The first half of the movie felt very corny in the way that they reused all the old jokes from the first movie. Jack Sparrow is a funny enough character that he didn't need to use old jokes to remind us that he was awesome. The humor felt more forced and a lot less original than the first, but overall Jack Sparrow is still cool in my book. Davy Jones was AMAZING. He looked so realistic, it was really creepy how well they pulled him off. Some of the scenes in the movie felt a bit too far fetched, even for a movie about a man with an octopus face and a barnacle crew. The way they brought back old characters seemed kind of lame to me, but there's a point where you just live with it and the movie goes on. The movie starts off really weird with the introduction of a new character right off the bat that just busts in and changes everything that the first movie set up. Another drag was the movie had such a sense of urgency, but scene after scene just got everyone nowhere. I felt like I was watching the Odyssey because every other scene had the crew shipwrecked and further away from their destination than before. On the other hand, I was always on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. The jar of dirt, the chest, the key, etc... all had me wondering what they were going to be used for. In the end, I was entertained, but I expected better. I'd reccomend the movie to people because it was good, but it wasn't as good as the original. I know this review makes the movie look REALLY bad, but it wasn't bad at all, it just wasn't spectacular or great. Also, was I the only one that thought the end was kind of lame. The credits for the second and third movie showed Geoffrey Rush as a character, but that's kind of my own fault for snooping around imdb. Also, you know Jack Sparrow can't be gone because he's obviously in the third movie. The whole movie is kind of an anti-climax that builds up to the third movie. I was kind of rooting for all three movies to have seperate stories, but instead it looks like we have another Matrix-esque trilogy going on.
Think while it's still legal.

I just got back. Cant say I enjoyed it much, maybe I was too tired or something. I came in expecting it to be great. Fight scenes were cool but really unbelievable...and the movie drug on for 19032 hours without anything really happening. I know it sounds vague for a description, but this sums up what other people were trying to say. Go see it and you'll know what I mean.

i just got back from it 5 minutes ago, it's 3:30am. I was enjoying it until I realized I had been asleep for an hour, seriously. It just drug on and on. I did really like davy jones, though, and johnny depp is still a badass, it just could've been condensed and simplified. a lot. i'm tired. sleeeeeeeeeeep

It's got too much action, too much explaining, too much of almost everything. The entire movie is a lot like the wheel fight toward the end: rolling along, rolling along, rolling along until finally falling over leaving the audience to stagger dizzily away.

But I love me some Johnny Depp.
2006-07-07, 3:02 AM #28
I just got back

I actually liked it a lot
the first half was slow

but I thought it flowed pretty seamlessly from the first one

I also liked the fact that it was NOT all disney and yay happily ever after, every character is incredibly one sided and loyalty and justice!
perceptions of characters are DEFINITELY "shattered" .. or in the least most of the characters get some complexity and dimension

Also, I liked the way it ended. Haha. Even though I knew it was coming (cuz of imdb)

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is the worst kind of sequel -- the kind that exists only to give you more-more-more of what you liked the first time around, without ever justifying its own existence."

That quote reminds me that I hate all the kracken scenes.

(Why didn't Legolas pull out his bow?)
2006-07-07, 7:51 AM #30
I loved that movie, personally. I was the only person who didn't jump in the entire theater I bet when that guy came out of the mud with Will there (oh come on, it's not a spoiler).

My largest complaint? If i see that kracken destroy one more ship I'm going to scream. FOR GOD'S SAKE PEOPLE, WE GET IT. IT DESTROYS SHIPS.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Why does the Kracken cross the road?

To crush ships on the other side! Har

I just saw it last night, and it was pretty good... however the ending was really, really bad. The plot is practically right back at the beginning, they have almost the same problems as they used to at the beginning.

You sir must not play RPGs. There's been a Kraken or something similar at least once in just about every RPG series ever when the heros have to cross a sea by boat.

Twas a fairly good movie. I especially liked the fight between Norrington, Jack and Will .

The ending was a little annoying. They did the same thing that made me hate the ending of the second Matrix movie. But that one sucked anyway, so that didn't matter.

8/10.
nope.
2006-07-07, 11:59 AM #37
A lot of people seem to dislike the cliffhanger, but for some reason it didn't irk me at all .. maybe because I knew it was coming

I actually really liked the closing .. Geoffery Rush 's line was perfectly delivered and the apple bite and the monkey was just enough of a throwback to make it resonate with that kind of inside joke that makes you want to laugh.

Saw it last night (this morning). So tired, I thought it was good though, hated the cliffhanger.

Through the entire end fight scene on the ship and what not, all I was wondering is where the heart was

I had kinda guessed that Norrington had it. since he was so willing to run off to let the others escape.
nope.
2006-07-07, 1:01 PM #40
BUT, was it Davy Jones' real heart? And how did he end up with it, if it really is it? Did he and Jack perhaps make a deal? My thinking is maybe he slaid (slayed?) the guys that came after him, and threw one of those hearts in a bag, just so he can get his position back. But, most likely, he and Jack made a deal.

haha, I may have just given a plot piece away to those who haven't seen it. Whatever you do, DON'T READ THE SPOILERS.
