I'm just curious about everyones oppinions on the Wii, PS3, 360...Mostly the Wii and the PS3 because I have plans to buy one of those two. I would usually go with a PS3, but the Wii just looks amazing. Anyone know any pros or cons for the PS3/Wii.

Also if a thread like this has been started already sorry, I just havent been to Massassi in a while.

Con PS3 - Price. Major con.

Pro Wii - New controller technology...at least I think it's new.

Basically all you need to know.

The Wii has the strongest Nintendo lineup ever and I think the strongest lineup compared to PS3 and XBox360 as well. The price, size and unique style of gameplay will really win people over to side with nintendo. It worked with the DS vs. PSP and I think the Wii is really going to dominate this war. September 14th Nintendo is going to announce the price and release date of the Wii. So far nintendo has been playing all the right cards, lets hope for a mid-october / early-november release with a price of around $200. If that's the case, Nintendo is unstoppable. Nintendo said that their console would play smooth and simple and then they let people play it and it really does. It's supposedly amazingly cool. I can't wait.

I've put a lot of thought into who's going to win the next console war. The ONLY way PS3 can pull out on top, from my point of view, is if Sony has positively AMAZING advertising. But I wasn't old enough to keep track of Sony in 2000/2001 when PS2 launched to remember how their advertising is. Yoshi claims it's very good, and it damn well better be if they want to do well.

I need to write out all my reasons for why the PS3 needs this amazing advertising, and just post it in each thread.

PS3

Cons:
  • Overpriced.
  • Few games that aren't also on a cheaper console.
  • Uses technologies that have not been tested on the open market (Bluray and Cell)
  • Huge. Jesus Christ, so huge.
  • Crippling supply issues are inevitable.
  • It's Sony, so everything is going to be saddled with so much DRM that you'll be lucky if you can play a game at all.
  • Flimsy-feeling and paper-light controller.
  • No rumble features on controller.
  • Gyroscope-based motion sensing, which is so unreasonably inaccurate that few - if any - games will ever make use of it.
  • The boomerang controller was better. Seriously, guys.

Pros:
  • Will play Bluray movies at a low resolution.
  • Might play Bluray movies at a high resolution, if you own a Sony HDTV made within the last 3 months.
  • The PS3 will self-destruct if you attempt to connect it to any sort of personal recording device (such as a VCR, PVR, or aiming a camcorder in the general direction of the screen), so if the FBI raids your house they'll never find your kiddy porn.

Wii

Cons:
  • Too many exclusive titles.
  • Due to its small size, it may be lost easily.

Pros:
  • Everything.

The only way PS3 will pull out on top is a price cut at the last minute.
2006-09-03, 7:32 PM #10
Which won't happen.

Seriously, I'm gonna go write out my PS3 arguement. I consider it very well thought out.

HAY GUYZ, I LOVE ANTI-SONY/PS3 PROPAGANDA TOO!

Okay, now as for facts--neither is out yet. The Revolution may not be all it's chalked up to be (there's rumors of problems with the controllers), and the PS3 may never come out (bluray bluray lol). To put it simply--saying you won't buy the PS3 because you bought the Rev is stupid. If you can afford a 500-ish console but refuse to buy a 200-ish console then...well...uh...yeah. That's kind of retarded. And vice versa, if you're willing to pay 500 for the PS3 but won't pay it if you have to drop a measly 200 bones on a rev, then you need to get your head checked.

There aren't any rumors with bugs in the Wii-motes that I've heard. If there is somehow IGN never heard of it (impossible). At E3 and at the German Game Convention they just had the Wii was hands on. No problems at either of them. Also stop calling the Wii the Revolution. It's stupid that you refuse to call the Wii by it's right name. Saying it's a stupid name and you refuse to say it is a stupid reason.

The PS3 has several drawbacks, already noted by Jon`C. But I'll go where he didn't. I guess I'll start with games.

Sony has stated...how many times that they're not focusing on making it a "gaming" machine but more on a "media center" right? That doesn't bode well for the gaming, in my opinion. And PlayStation is known as a gaming brand.

OK, sure, they're target age is like 18-35. Yeah, if anyone in that age range is looking at PS3's they'll know all about everythign it can do. But that's the only place that it'll sell well. And even there...why? If you want to fully utilize the PS3 for all it's worth, well...let's see here...

$1500 for a nice TV
$600 for the PS3
$100 for sound setup
$900 for a media PC
$100 for all the Sony networking stuff

You're looking at close to $3500 when it's all said and done to fully utilize the PS3 as a media center. So why not just get a media center PC, make it a gaming rig too, and have it all in one place? And also, half of their age target is in college/fresh out and will not be very plentiful when it comes to money.

And a blu-ray player? No one even knows if blu-ray is going to beat HD-DVD yet. Isn't that a bit pre-emptive? And, once again, to fully utilize blu ray, $1500 on the TV too.

Oh, going back to their target age again. Do you honestly think that just because sony says "Oh well we're targetting 25 year old males" that no one under that age will buy it? Uh, wrong. But this brings me to my next point (sort of).

Releasing around the holiday season. Grandparents are looking for a gift for the grandkids. First, we have supply vs. demand. Will enough people be able to get their hands on a PS3? Will enough of those PS3's work? And why would someone give a $500-600 gift when they can give a $250-$350 gift (estimating the 360 price drop) or even a $200 gift?

Wow, that sucked. I did a much better job of debating it in real life, but I hope I got across the gist of my arguement.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Wii Pros:
- Zelda: Twilight Princess
- Super Smash Bros Brawl
- Metroid Prime 3
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Virtual Console (Download classic games, probably for a small fee each)
- Zelda! There's no Navi in this one, I hear!
- Wiimote is cool and should be a fun, refreshing change.
- FREE online play service.
- Opera for Wii included free.
- Plays GameCube games.
- Will have a PC monitor port for direct connections. Since I don't have a TV this will be a plus for me.
- Don't forget to pick up Zelda. You can swing your sword by swinging the Wiimote!!!
- Will cost less than the other new consoles, by a SIGNIFICANT amount (less than half a PS3, POSSIBLY half an X-Box 360).
- Internal hard drive for game saves.
- GameCube controller ports and memory card ports (I think).
- Fun name!
- Did I mention I'm looking forward to Zelda?

Wii Cons:
- Um... GameCube Game Boy Player probably won't work?

I think it was last week when Sony said they didn't even start production of the PS3. SCREWED. No way they can fill their demand. No way in hell. Sony royally MESSED UP this generation. Hell I think the PS3 looks cool, but $600 (for a system that doesn't suck). Hell no. The other reason that I won't get a PS3, is because Sony doesn't have their s**t together yet. They messed up E3, and they are messing up their production line as well. How can I trust six hundred of my dollars to Sony if they can't prove they are going to give me a quality product yet? They keep changing things in the PS3, and even now it isn't 100%. Like I said, they messed up.

It's been rumored that the PS3 will also be a Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine.

[Edit: Twilight Princess for sure, I think Wii Sports might come with the Wii, and Red Steel if IGN rates it high. They keep saying it has some issues with the controls.

The PS3 is retarded because Sony no longer understands what the Playstation actually is. Ken Kutaragi (the "father" of the Playstation) has never approached it as a toy: he's always approached the situation like it's a war for the living room. Rough translation: like a war to gain Sony's media empire more market share.

This is a war Sony is going to lose. They are great at making specialized products, but they suck horribly when it comes to this kind of swiss-army-knife-multimedia bull****. You can see it in the PSP and even a little bit in the PS2. And no, nobody can deny that the PSP would have been a much stronger gaming machine without the overriding focus on multimedia.
Hell, Sony is so abrasive and unfair to other companies that they bought their way into multimedia for the express purpose of pushing content onto their halfbaked proprietary formats.
And in the end, Sony has next to no industry support whatsoever. The carpet is being pulled out from under them in a major way. The only game companies that still really support them are Japanese, and thanks to a combination of factors the Japanese game market is fading into complete irrelevance. (Negative market growth in Japan among other things).

Microsoft, on the other hand? They're not much better, but at least they know what they're doing. They used established technologies and asked actual game developers if their console was going to be retardedly hard to develop for. When they said "Yes [ but at least it's not Cell! :D ]", Microsoft worked on creating tools to make their jobs easier.
And, in addition to that, Microsoft is probably-illegally using their home computer dominance to back up the 360's multimedia features, which is something Sony simply can't do.

You can call this anti-Sony propaganda if you really feel like you have to.

1) They haven't started production of the console itself. All the pieces are being worked on and have been for a while. The only piece they're missing is the video component, which is on its way. While I agree they probably won't fill demand, people are blowing it out of proportion--the only two complex components, the blu-ray drive and the processor are both being produced and have been for a while.

2) They did **** up, but...why would you not get one because they didn't start production. The X800 had a paper launch, then four months later actually started being mass produced. Does that mean you shouldn't buy it? No. That means you should call ATI a horrible company for a while, then forgive them and buy their card because, int he end, it was still a good card.

3) They messed up E3? Uh...okay. They showed Assassin's Creed, MGS4 and Warhawk. That alone makes me want a PS3. Did they repeat a lot of showings? Yeah. What does that say about Sony? That they didn't have a WHOLE lot of variety. Not much else.

4) If you don't trust the quality of the system, wait a month or two and then buy it. That's what I plan on doing. Not because I don't trust Sony because they "LOL MESSED UP E3" but because the PS2 had horrible bugs at launch, as did the PS1. I'm gonna wait it out a bit to see how the PS3 fares at launch.

Oh, and Gamespot said Red Steel sucked balls.

True enough, I guess, but it was debuted for the PS3 (on a 360 :()

Oh, and the PS3 IS finalized. The dev kits have been shipped, the controllers have been finalized, there's nothing left to add/take away to/from the PS3. It's done. It's just a matter of production.

Which is honestly why I LIKE the Xbox. Everything gets ported to it. It gets quite a few of the PC titles. And it has some reasonably decent exclusives. The other consoles have exclusives I really don't care too much for, and the ones I do care for... meh. Not worth buying a system to play.
